Chemistry Lecture Tomorrow: Spectroscopies of Non-Planar Hemes
The Department of Chemistry will present "Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Spectroscopies of Non-Planar Hemes as Models of the Cytochromes b Heme Centers" on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).
Liliya A. Yatsunyk (above), professor, Department of Chemistry, Swarthmore College, will be the speaker.
A variety of models for the cytochrome bc1 heme centers based on bis-imidazole and bis-pyridine coordinated Fe(III) octaalkyltetraphenylporphyrins have been synthesized and studied by NMR, EPR, and Mössbauer spectroscopies and X-ray crystallography. Based on extensive EPR, Mössbauer and X-ray data, correlation was established between the axial ligand plane dihedral angles and Mössbauer (Azz, DEQ) and EPR (gzz) parameters. The EPR signal type changes from 'large gmax' to normal rhombic at ~57°. These findings will help in accurate prediction of structural parameters of heme centers in proteins based on their spectroscopic signatures.
Refreshments will be served.
This event is open to the public.

Teach-in Tomorrow: Health Care Reform and Social Justice
The Spring 2008 Great Works Symposium will present a teach-in “American Health Care Reform and Social Justice” on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
The United States has arguably the most expensive, yet least efficient and least effective health care system in the industrialized world. Most Americans agree that the system is broken, though they may disagree about the appropriate solutions. This interdisciplinary teach-in by Drexel faculty will provide an overview of American health care reform that will raise awareness about the issue for newcomers and update those already informed.
The goal of the teach-in is to inform attendees about this important issue in an election year, and to reorient the discussion of health care reform toward advocacy for social justice.
Complimentary refreshments will be served.
Lecturers include Stephen F. Gambescia, assistant dean of academic and student affairs and associate professor, College of Nursing and Health Professions; James A. Schafer, visiting faculty fellow in the Pennoni Honors College; and Dennis Gallagher, associate professor of health management and policy at the School of Public Health.
