MEM Spring Seminar Series Lecture Today
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics will present a lecture "BioMEMS and Nanoparticles for Disease Detection and Treatment” today, May 23, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 162, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Dr. Winston Soboyejo (above), professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University, will present the results of recent studies of bioMEMS and nanoparticles for cancer detection and treatment. In the first half of the talk, Dr. Soboyejo will examine the design of surfaces that can improve the integration of bioMEMS structures (for drug delivery and disease detection) with biological cells/tissue and will conclude with the potential use of nanoparticle cocktails in the design of systems that can be used to kill cancer cells by localized drug delivery and the induction of hyperthermia by oscillating magnetic fields.

Biomedical Engineering Seminar Today
The School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, will hold a seminar, "Novel Multi-institutional Technology Transfer Models as Engines for Economic Growth," today, May 23, 2008 at 4 p.m. in room 109, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).
Dr. Anthony P. Green (above) will be the speaker. Dr. Green is vice president of Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Ben Franklin Director of The Nanotechnology Institute.
Dr. Green will describe current attitudes about the technology transfer process that moves discoveries from the academic laboratories to the market place. Institutional administrators want to create value from their intellectual property (IP) emerging in university laboratories while companies are pressured to develop and commercialize new technology and products rapidly. As a result, both sides are willing to look at new models for technology transfer with decreased skepticism.
This seminar is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

This Weekend at the World Cafe Live
Friday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m.
XPN Welcomes Danielia Cotton - Downstairs
Growing up in rural Hopewell, New Jersey, Danielia Cotton stood out. Not only because she was one of seven African American students in her junior high school, but because of the compelling power of her shockingly big voice, which stopped people in their tracks from early on. Danielia's natural gift - raw, searing vocal chops combined with a deep, buttery tone - draws from rich traditions that she absorbed early in her youth. For more information about this show, visit http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=2436.
Saturday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m.
Simone with the Rob Stoneback Big Band - Downstairs
Simone is her own woman - a singer, songwriter and performer whose ability to transcend genres echoes the tradition of her mother, musical icon and pioneer Nina Simone. Blessed with a rich vocal range, an innate skill for lyrical interpretation and a soul-deep understanding of music as a means of healing, empowerment and celebration, Simone is very much her mother's daughter and a multi-talented artist in her own right.
