Grand Opening of ThirtyOne41 Today at 10

The grand opening of ThirtyOne41, a new place for coffee, lunch and snacks, will take place today, May 22, 2008, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Great Court of Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Reception and Awards Tonight: Student, Faculty and Alumni Art at the Annex

The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present the 15th Annual Annex Art Exhibition reception and awards ceremony today, May 22, 2008 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Design Arts Annex Building (3220 Cherry Street).

The student-run show, which continues through May 23, features the diverse artistic talents of Westphal students, faculty and alumni in paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography.

The Annex exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Save the Date: 2nd Annual CMAA Picnic on May 31

The Drexel chapter of the Construction Management Advisory Council is hosting a picnic on Saturday, May 31, 2008, from noon to 5 p.m. at Knights Park in Collingswood, New Jersey.

This picnic will provide students with an opportunity to network with industry professionals in a casual setting and for CMAA members to develop relationships with other members.

Faculty Save the Date: GRAND Inaugural Reception on June 2

The Office of International Programs, Office of Research and the Office of Faculty Development and Equity invite faculty to attend the inaugural reception of the University’s Global Research and Academic Network (GRAND), on June 2, 2008 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the Paul Peck Alumni Center (32nd and Market Streets).

GRAND is a new initiative to encourage faculty with international research and academic interests to link up with one another across the University and to launch a Drexel data base of international expertise.

There will be complimentary food and beverages, prizes and most important, an opportunity to network with other Drexel faculty members.

Food Scientist to Speak at Academic Bistro Tonight

Goodwin College’s Hospitality Management, Culinary Arts, Culinary Science, and Food Science Programs will host a presentation, “From Pop Rocks to MooBella: Bringing New Food Products to the Market,” with food scientist Dr. Marv Rudolph today, May 22, 2008 at 5 p.m. at the Academic Bistro on the 6th floor of the Academic Building (33rd and Arch Streets).

Dr. Rudolph, director of food science for MooBella, LLC, is a renowned innovator behind many well-known brand name products for some of the world’s leading food companies. He received his B.S. (’67) and Ph.D. (’71) in physical chemistry from Drexel.

In his 35 years as a food scientist, Dr. Rudolph has been associated with some of the country’s leading corporations, including Pepsico, Columbo and Kellogg’s and is an innovator behind products including Slim Fast® meal replacement beverages and nutrition bars, Ragú® pasta sauces, Adolph’s® meat tenderizers and marinades, and the popular carbonated candy, Pop Rocks®. At MooBella, he has been instrumental in the distribution of a new vending machine that produces a scoop of fresh ice cream in 45 seconds with a choice of 12 flavors and three toppings.

MEM Spring Seminar Series Lecture Tomorrow

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics will present a lecture "BioMEMS and Nanoparticles for Disease Detection and Treatment” on Friday, May 23, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 162, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Winston Soboyejo, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University, will present the results of recent studies of bioMEMS and nanoparticles for cancer detection and treatment.  In the first half of the talk, Dr. Soboyejo will examine the design of surfaces that can improve the integration of bioMEMS structures (for drug delivery and disease detection) with biological cells/tissue and will conclude with the potential use of nanoparticle cocktails in the design of systems that can be used to kill cancer cells by localized drug delivery and the induction of hyperthermia by oscillating magnetic fields.

Save the Date: Biomedical Festival on May 30

The Biomedical Engineering Society, the Drexel Biomedical Undergraduate Association and the Drexel Biomedical Graduate Association will host the 2008 End of Year Biomed Festival on Friday, May 30, 2008, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Cavanaugh's River Deck (417 N. Columbus Boulevard).

The event will feature salsa dancing lessons, faculty roasting and many more activities.

All students, not just biomed engineers, are welcome.

Tickets are $10 at the Biomed Office on the 7th floor of the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets) and $15 at the door (on a first-come, first-served basis).

Biomedical Engineering Seminar Tomorrow

The School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, will hold a seminar on "Novel Multi-institutional Technology Transfer Models as Engines for Economic Growth" on Friday, May 23, 2008 at 4 p.m. in room 109, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).

Dr. Anthony P. Green (above) will be the speaker. Dr. Green is vice president of Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Ben Franklin Director of The Nanotechnology Institute.

Dr. Green will describe current attitudes about the technology transfer process that moves discoveries from the academic laboratories to the market place. Institutional administrators want to create value from their intellectual property (IP) emerging in university laboratories while companies are pressured to develop and commercialize new technology and products rapidly. As a result, both sides are willing to look at new models for technology transfer with decreased skepticism.

This seminar is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

Judaic Studies Panel: "Growing Up in Israel"

The Judaic Studies Program will present an intergenerational conversation to mark the 60th anniversary of the state of Israel, "Growing Up in Israel - A Panel Discussion," on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Panelists will include Roy Reuveni, college student; Leah Goldman, early childhood Jewish educator; Sarit Sade, former academic liason, Israeli Consulate; Dr. Sorin Siegler, professor of engineering; and Bella L. Schafer, Jewish educator, psychotherapist and pioneering officer in the Israeli army.

The new state of Israel established a society that nurtures a variety of creative individuals and institutions. Attendees will hear the diverse viewpoints of individuals of varying religious and ethnic backgrounds who grew up at different times in Israel's history.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Great Works Symposium Today: Narrative Medicine

The Spring 2008 "Modern Medicine"  Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) will present "Narrative Medicine: How 'Thinking Story' Can Contribute to Effective Medical Care" today, May 22, 2008, from 6 to 7:20 p.m. in room 108, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Emilie Passow (above), who holds a joint appointment in the Department of English and Philosophy and the Judaic Studies Program, will explain how biomedical technology and physical examination offer crucial facts about a patient's condition. This talk explores how framing such information in terms of narrative provides a way of listening to and interpreting a patient's experience of illness that can be crucial for determining the most effective medical care for the individuals involved.

The Department of Physics will host a colloquium, "Is Quantum Mechanics Chaotic?" today, May 22, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in room 919, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Steven Mark Anlage (above), professor of physics, University of Maryland, will be the speaker.

Dr. Anlage's current research is concentrated on the use of near-field microwave microscopes to investigate the nanoscale fundamental physics of correlated electron systems.
