Groundbreaking Ceremony for 34th Street Residence Hall

Students, faculty and staff are invited to the 34th Street Residence Hall groundbreaking ceremony, today, May 20, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. on 34th Street between Powelton Avenue and Race Street.

Breaking ground will be Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, President Papadakis, Board Chairman Richard Greenawalt, Trustee Robert Buckley and James Tucker, senior vice president for Student Life and Administrative Services. Jeff Gardosh, president of the Undergraduate Student Government Association will represent Drexel students.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to a cookout following the ceremony.

Designed by renowned Erdy McHenry Architecture in association with ARUP, this $42 million building will be the focal point of the campus’ residential quadrant with skyline views of the city. 

The 17-story building will house 500 students in a hybrid suite configuration with a series of shared living areas that will create a common link throughout the building. The building’s design will incorporate many environmental sustainable features including a green roof.

Tomorrow Night: An Evening of Cretan Culture

The Office the President, the Greek Studies and Culinary Arts Programs and Creta-Farms will present an evening of Cretan culture on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 6 p.m. at the Academic Bistro, 6th floor, Academic Building (33rd and Arch Streets).

The evening will celebrate the publication of Unraveling Ariadne's Thread: Cretan Music by Dr. Maria Hnaraki, director of Greek Studies. It will also mark the inauguration of the Drexel University Greek Alumni Association.

This event is free and open to the public.

Save the Date: AAGSA to Present Arts Leader Ben Cameron on May 29

The Arts Administration Graduate Student Association will host a presentation by Ben Cameron (above), "Engaging the Next Generation of Leaders," on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium in the Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Street).

A former theater professional, frequent public speaker and arts activist, Ben Cameron is program director of the Arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in New York City. Cameron will address the challenges and opportunities facing emerging leaders in the arts and cultural sector.

This event is co-sponsored by the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and the Philadelphia Cultural Management Initiative, a program of the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Heritage, funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts and administered by the University of the Arts.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Save the Date: Inaugural "Bowl for the Cure"

The Sport Management Graduate Program has joined the Philadelphia City Six schools to raise money for “Coaches vs. Cancer” during the inaugural “Bowl for the Cure” event presented by Mitchell & Ness on Friday, June 13, 2008, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at North Bowl Lounge in Northern Liberties (909 N. 2nd Street).

Tickets and sponsorships include cocktails, appetizers, dinner, bowling and a gift bag. All of the proceeds will benefit cancer research through the “Coaches vs. Cancer” program.

City Six coaches, professional athletes and local celebrities will be in attendance and will bowl with event sponsors. 

“Coaches vs. Cancer” is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This program empowers coaches, their teams and local communities to fight cancer.

DUCoM Student Wins New Jersey Marathon

Kate Bowser (above), a first-year student at the Drexel University College of Medicine won the women’s division of the New Jersey Marathon on Sunday, May 4, 2008 with a time of 3:04:51.

Bowser runs for the Drexel track club and the DUCoM track club as well as the Philadelphia Running Club.

Johnson & Johnson Ice Cream Social

Representatives from Johnson & Johnson will host the second annual Johnson & Johnson Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the 3rd floor atrium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Street).

Students can make their own ice cream sundaes and network with representatives from Johnson & Johnson, including Dominic Caruso (’80), CFO and a Drexel alumnus.

Students will learn about Johnson & Johnson, have an opportunity to ask questions, enjoy networking with fellow students and company representatives and have multiple chances to win prizes.

FISDU to Host "Barrio Fiesta"

The Filipino Intercultural Society will host “Barrio Fiesta” on Saturday, May 31, 2008, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. in the Great Court and the show will begin at 7 p.m.

There will be a fine selection of Filipino cuisine available to savor before the show begins. After attendees have finished Tropical Hut's Filipino cuisine, entertainment will be provided by members of the Filipino Intercultural Society.

The performance encompasses traditional Filipino dances, modern hip-hop influenced dances and the musical stylings of FISDU members, all of which are tied into a dramatic, yet comedic, play.

All ages and cultures are invited to this fiesta.

Ticket price for general admission is $12. Ticket price for students and senior citizens is $10.

Chemistry Department to Present: "From Protein Mimetics to Cellular Transport Agents"

The Department of Chemistry will present "From Protein Mimetics to Cellular Transport Agents" on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

David Smithrud (above), professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Cincinnati, will be the speaker.

Seminar topics include a brief discussion on molecular recognition, the unique architecture of host-rotaxanes, which controls the spatial arrangement of functional groups and the latest results in the transport of materials into cells.

Anne Cecil, director of the Fashion Merchandising Program, will present "Fish and Lamb: What's a Fashion Designer to Do? Icelandic Fashion, Nature and Identity." Cecil will show a multimedia presentation based on her trip to Iceland to study its fashion and youth culture.

Tour of the Valero Refinery in Delaware City Today

iSchool to Co-host Executive Forum for IT Security on May 20 and 21

The iSchool at Drexel, College of Information Science and Technology, is partnering with IP3, Inc., the nation's leader in information assurance and information security education and research, to present a two-day technical workshop for corporate IT security directors, "Strategy to Reality: Don"t Look Back," today, May 20 and Wednesday, May 21, 2008 in the Living Arts Lounge adjacent to Mandell Theater, Creese Student Center (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

This intensive two-day workshop will offer an environment for dialogue and collaboration among researchers in academics, IT administrators and professionals in the industry. The seminar provides a balance of theory and real-case scenarios demonstrating how security systems have been breached and solutions available to prevent breaches from happening.
