Student Government Wraps-Up Elections Today


The Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) will wrap-up its annual elections this week. The polls close today, May 20 at 5 p.m.

Vote by visiting http://www.drexel.edu/usga/vote. Use your DrexelOne username and password. Voting is open to all undergraduate students.

Health Sciences Commencement Ceremonies Today


Commencement ceremonies for Drexel's health sciences programs will be held today, May 20, 2005 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts (260 South Broad Street). The Drexel University College of Medicine Ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. The College of Nursing and Health Professions and School of Public Health ceremony will be held at 2 p.m.

At the DUCoM ceremony, Dr. Catherine D. DeAngelis (above left), editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association, editor-in-chief of Scientific Publications and Multimedia Applications and professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will receive a Doctor of Medical Science, honoris causa.

Dr. David C. Leach (above center), executive director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in Chicago, will also receive a Doctor of Medical Science, honoris causa.

Dr. Linda M. Rhodes (above right), former Secretary of Aging for Pennsylvania, newspaper columnist and author, will receive a Doctor of Public Service, honoris causa, at the College of Nursing and Health Professions and School of Public Health ceremony.

Main Campus Commencement Honorary Degree Recipients Announced


The Main Campus will celebrate its 118th Commencement with four separate ceremonies on Saturday, June 11, 2005 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets). All ceremonies will be Webcast live at http://www.drexel.edu.

The honorary degree recipients for each ceremony are:

8:30 a.m., College of Engineering, School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, Goodwin College of Professional Studies, College of Nursing and Health Professions (BNS Co-op nurses only)

Donna Shirley (above top far left), former manager of the Mars Exploration Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. will receive a Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Shirley was the original leader of the team that built the Sojourner Rover that successfully landed on Mars in July 1997, and later went into orbit around the planet.

Noon, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Media Arts & Design, College of Information Science and Technology

James Lipton (above top left), host of Bravo’s Inside the Actors Studio, will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. Lipton has interviewed more than 80 of contemporary film and theater’s most noteworthy contributors. Author of the highly praised novel, An Exaltation of Larks, Lipton has written or produced more than 25 variety specials, movies and performing arts programs for network and cable television. Mr. Lipton serves as vice president of The Actors Studio Board and dean of the master's degree program for New York City’s “New School For Social Research and The Studio” program.

Dr. Alan G. MacDiarmid (above top right), recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in chemistry will receive a Doctor of Science, honoris causa. He won the Nobel Prize for co-discovering and developing conductive polymers, a phenomenon completely new and unexpected to the chemistry and physics communities.

John A. Nyheim (above top far right), investment counsel for Nyheim & Associates, will receive a Doctor of Humane Letter, honoris causa. A member of the Drexel Board of Trustees since 1989, he established the Nyheim Endowed Chair of Engineering at Drexel.

4 p.m., Bennet S. LeBow College of Business, School of Education

John Roberts, '67 (above bottom left), retired global managing partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers and former Drexel trustee, will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. He held numerous positions at Coopers & Lybrand LLP until its merger with Pricewaterhouse and served as global managing partner for Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP from until 2002. Mr. Roberts was a member of the Drexel Board of Trustees from 1992-2004.

Dr. Joseph Stiglitz (above bottom center), the 2001 Nobel Prize winner in economics, will receive a Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa. Dr. Stiglitz helped create a branch of economics that examines the consequences of information asymmetries. He served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors during the Clinton administration, was chief economist and senior vice president of the World Bank and is the founder one of the leading economics journals, The Journal of Economic Perspectives.

7 p.m., Graduate ceremony for all M.S., M.A., MBA and Ph.D. candidates from all colleges and schools on the University City Main Campus.

Manuel Stamatakis (above bottom right), PHEC chairman and Drexel trustee, will receive a Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa. Mr. Stamatakis is an active member of numerous boards, including the U.S. Department of Commerce Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority and BioTechnology Greenhouse Corporation of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He is chair of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Board, the Philadelphia Shipyard Development Corporation, the World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Investment Advisory Board.

CAB to Screen Million Dollar Baby


The Campus Activities Board (CAB) will screen the Academy Award-winning film Million Dollar Baby tonight, May 20, 2005 at 8 and 11 p.m. and Sunday, May 22, 2005 at 5 and 8 p.m. Screenings are held in Nesbitt Hall's Stein Auditorium (33rd and Market Streets). Tickets are $3 for one and $5 for two with a valid Drexel ID.

Pearlstein Gallery to Hold Historic Costume Collection Exhibition


The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery will hold the exhibition "Gems from the Drexel Historic Costume Collection" Monday, May 23-Friday, June 3, 2005. The Gallery is located at 33rd and Market Streets.

The free exhibition features gowns conserved by the sponsorship of the Friends of the College of Media Arts & Design. The exhibition is curated by Bella Veksler, instructor and curator of the Drexel Historic Costume Collection, and Kathi Martin, associate professor of design and director of graduate studies in fashion. Additional selections will be on display outside of the Westphal Picture Gallery in the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

A free reception will be held at the Pearlstein Gallery on Tuesday, May 24, 2005 from 5-7 p.m. The Pearlstein Gallery is open Monday - Friday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and by appointment. For information, call 215-895-2548 or email gallery@drexel.edu.

Food Festival Today

NABA Bowl (Flag Football) Tourney


Think your organization has what it takes to be champions?

Great Works Symposium to Present Tenor Richard Troxell


The Great Works Symposium on Musical Theatre will present the lecture, "Today's Classical Singer: From Scorsese to Porter to Puccini," by tenor Richard Troxell (above) on Thursday, May 26 from 3:30-4:50 p.m. in the Westphal Picture Gallery, Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Troxell will discuss his career as a lyric tenor and sing selections from his operatic repertoire. Troxell's star turn as Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton in Martin Scorsese's critically acclaimed film Madame Butterfly received high praise from film and music critics alike when it appeared in the U.S. in 1996.

Students Celebrate Diversity of African Culture


The Drexel African Students Association (DASA) will hold its spring gala, "4 the Love of Africa," on Thursday, May 26, 2005 in the Van Rensselaer Ballroom (33rd and Powelton Streets). Doors open at 7 p.m.

The evening will feature performances that celebrate the diversity of African culture from the North, South, East and West - all "4 the Love of Africa." Dinner from across the Continent will also be served

Academic Bistro


The Department of Hospitality Studies' Academic Bistro restaurant is open for lunch on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during the 2005 spring term. Dinner is available on Tuesday evenings and, during the senior design class of 2005 exhibition period, on Thursday evenings.

The Academic Bistro is operated by hospitality management and culinary arts majors who develop the menus and prepare and serve the food. Menus for the week of May 23, 2005 are as follows:
