Today: Governor Bill Richardson Presents "Energy: A Flashpoint for Change"
The Eastern Technology Council will present "Titans of Technology," which honors global technology innovators, and a moderated panel discussion, today, May 19, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets). Keynote speaker for the event will be Bill Richardson (above), governor of New Mexico.
Governor Richardson's talk, "Energy: A Flashpoint for Change," will address the significance of oil and energy in economic, diplomatic and strategic terms. He regards energy, its uses, its sources and its stability as a cornerstone for building the future and the security of our country and the world. As Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration, he laid the foundation for an aggressive strategy to move our nation away from dependency on foreign oil, toward renewable energy sources and securing our national laboratories.
President Papadakis will open the event with introductory remarks. Dr. Donna Gentile O’Donnell, managing director of the Eastern Technology Council and a Drexel trustee, will introduce Governor Richardson and present him with a "Titans of Technology" award
Registration is required for this event. The registration fee is $25 for ETC members and $35 for non-members. There is no fee for Drexel students, faculty and staff with a valid I.D.

Reception to Honor Joseph Casey Today
Dr. David A. Ruth, dean of students, invites the members of the University community to attend a reception honoring Joseph Casey (above), assistant dean of multicultural programs and special projects, today, May 19, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. outside the Pearlstein Gallery, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).
Casey will retire from Drexel at the end of May after more than 22 years of distinguished service.
During his tenure, Casey founded the ACT 101 program (Academic Enrichment Services), served as the assistant director of the Mental Health Associated Degree Program and taught at the assistant professor level. In 2000, Casey was appointed director of multicultural programs and special projects for the Center City Hahnemann Campus and in 2004, he became the assistant dean for multicultural programs for both DUCoM and Drexel. When students and colleagues speak of him, they describe his gift for building relationships across the university, which have enabled him to create programs and traditions built upon collaboration.

Individual Retirement Conferences with TIAA-CREF
Human Resources will host individual investment education conferences with TIAA-CREF at the Center City Hahnemann Campus on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Human Resources Conference Room, 1st Floor, Bellet Building (1505 Race Street).
Human Resources will also host individual investment education conferences with TIAA-CREF at the University City Main Campus on Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Human Resources Conference Room, 4th floor, 3201 Arch Street, Suite 430.
Reservations are required for individual conferences.

Lung Cancer Awareness Carnival Today
The Lung Cancer Awareness Carnival will be held today, May 19, 2008, from noon to 5 p.m. in The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).
The members of the Inter-Fraternity Council, the Panhellenic Council and Drexel Athletics invite students to come out and support this worthwhile cause.
The carnival will provide students with complimentary food and entertainment, including bouncy boxing, a dunk tank, raffle prizes and music. Proceeds will benefit the Fox Chase Cancer Center and Laura Koch, who was recently diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer.
Laura Koch is a former Drexel soccer player, member of Phi Mu and wife of Steve Koch, director of Intramural Sports.

Benefits Buzz: "Stress Buster - Penn Behavioral Health"
Human Resources will host "Stress Buster - Penn Behavioral Health" today, May 19, 2008, from 3 to 4 p.m. in room 116, Korman Center (33rd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets).
The next Benefits Buzz session, "Learn the ABC's of IBC (Keystone POS and Personal Choice)," will be held on Monday, June 2, 2008 at the same time and location.
Benefits Buzz is an informal weekly meeting that answers questions and provides information about Drexel benefits. Human Resources representatives will be available to present information and answer questions from faculty and staff.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for 34th Street Residence Hall
Students, faculty and staff are invited to the 34th Street Residence Hall groundbreaking ceremony, on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. on 34th Street between Powelton Avenue and Race Street. A cookout will follow the ceremony.
Designed by renowned Erdy McHenry Architecture in association with ARUP, this $42 million, 120,000 sq. ft. building will be the focal point of the campus’ residential quadrant with skyline views of the city. The innovative design allows the building to be constructed on the small site with little obstruction to neighboring buildings. The 17-story building will house 482 students in a hybrid suite configuration with a series of shared living areas that will create a common link throughout the building. The building’s design will incorporate many environmental sustainable features including a green roof.

Assistant dean and advisor to students, Antonia Sulena-Wetzel McMenamin (above), died on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 early in the morning from complications with lymphoma. She was 67 years old.
Toni McMenamin, as she was affectionately known, joined Drexel's administrative staff in 1987 and served as an honors advisor in the Penonni Honors College from 1991 to 2006. Always one to put students first, she displayed kindness to students as she helped them through their courses and life decisions. She cared for students so much that she continued to serve them even as she was battling cancer. She was a trusted advisor who knew the needs of the students and was a central part of the Pennoni Honors College.
McMenamin is survived by her husband, Patrick J. McMenamin, children, Patrick Jr., Roger, Cara Wing, seven grandchildren and a brother.
A funeral mass took place on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 604 West Ave., Jenkintown.
