Drexel Athletics Receives NCAA Diversity Award

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which oversees 1,200 member institutions and over 300,000 student-athletes, announced that the Athletics Department has won a  Diversity in Athletics Award in the category of Overall Excellence in Diversity.

“We are proud to receive this award,” said President Papadakis. “Diversity is an integral part of the college experience at Drexel. Our students and athletes enrich their education by interacting with students and employees from all walks of life and highly diverse backgrounds.”

There were 11 additional schools recognized with the award, including Stanford, Miami, Ohio State and Colorado. Drexel Athletics was singled out as an award recipient in the category of African American graduation rates for female student-athletes.

Drexel will receive the award in a ceremony on June 11 in Dallas, the site of the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors 2008 Convention, according to Eric Zillmer, director, Drexel Athletics.

U.S. News & World Report previously ranked Drexel Athletics number one in the nation for gender equity.

MEM Lecture Today: "Detection and Modulation of the Immune Response"

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics will present “Detection and Modulation of the Immune Response with Synthetic Biomaterials" today, May 16, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 162, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Tarek Fahmy (above right), assistant professor, Yale University, will discuss how biomaterials engineered at the nano and micro scale can facilitate the detection, non-invasive imaging and modulation of the immune response.

Save the Date: Johnson & Johnson Ice Cream Social May 21

Representatives from Johnson & Johnson will host the second annual Johnson & Johnson Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the 3rd floor atrium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Street).

Students can enjoy making their own ice cream sundaes and networking with representatives from Johnson & Johnson, including Dominic Caruso ’80, CFO and a Drexel alumnus.

Students will learn about Johnson & Johnson, have an opportunity to ask questions, enjoy networking with fellow students and company representatives and have multiple chances to win prizes.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble Tonight: "Coffee and Jazz"

Naturally Sharp, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, will present its annual concert, "Coffee and Jazz," today, May 16, 2008 at 8:20 p.m. in the Faculty Club, 6th floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

The performance will include music made famous by Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Manhattan Transfer and many others.

Complimentary coffee and dessert will be served.

This event is open to the public.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $6. Seating is limited.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble is part of the Department of Performing Arts in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.

Greater Philadelphia Film Office Panel: "Diversity in Filmmaking"

The Greater Philadelphia Film Office will present a panel discussion, “Diversity in Filmmaking,” on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the second floor, Prince Music Theater (1412 Chestnut Street).

Calling all trained or aspiring craft service professionals, electricians, film electronics and computer technicians, medics, grips, properties and special effects supervisors, set painters, shop craftsmen, sound engineers, videographers, wardrobe stylists…

Be seen. Be heard. Be the voice calling for diversity and inclusion on the set and in the production office.

There is no charge for this event.

Professionals with film credits should bring their resumes.

Final Concert Broadcast Today at Bossone

College of Engineering and the student chapter of IEEE will sponsor a high-definition broadcast of conductor Christoph Eschenbach’s (above) final concert as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra today, May 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Eschenbach closes the 2007-08 season with the final two symphonies of Franz Schubert. The two movements of the tenderly lyrical Unfinished Symphony set a wistful and nostalgic tone, which is then resolved by the valedictory strains of the Symphony in C Major.

Prior to the concert, at 1:30 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium, Dr. Youngmoo Kim, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will give a talk “The Technology Behind the Broadcast.”

Public Lecture Monday: Governor Bill Richardson on Climate Change

The Eastern Technology Council will present "Titans of Technology," a keynote address and moderated panel discussion, on Monday, May 19, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Keynote speaker for the event will be Bill Richardson (above), governor of New Mexico. Governor Richardson’s talk, “Energy: A Flashpoint for Change,” will address the significance of oil and energy in economic, diplomatic and strategic terms. He regards energy, its uses, its sources and its stability as a cornerstone for building the future and the security of our country and the world. As Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration, he laid the foundation for an aggressive strategy to move our nation away from dependency on foreign oil, toward renewable energy sources and securing our national laboratories.

Registration is required for this event. The registration fee is $25 for ETC members and $35 for non-members. There is no fee for Drexel students, faculty and staff with a valid I.D.

"Celebrate Health" Fair This Weekend

The Office of Government and Community Relations will present the 10th Annual “Celebrate Health” Fair on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from noon to 3 p.m. at the West Philadelphia Community Center (3512 Haverford Avenue).

Volunteers are still needed for this event. Those interested in volunteering should call Meghan Foran at 215-895-2102 or email mf89@drexel.edu.

The fair is presented in partnership with community leaders, Powelton Village Civic Association, Mantua Community Improvement Committee and 3rd District Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell

All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

More than 40 tables of health information and screenings will be available. Participating local community, faith and civic organizations will offer community members information about their services. 

The fair is presented in a festive environment that includes music, mascots and children’s activities. All attendees will receive a free t-shirt, lunch and raffle ticket for a chance to win donated gifts.

Film and Video Senior Show This Weekend: "Making the Cut"

The Film and Video Program in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design  will present its Senior Show on Sunday, May 18, 2008 with a reception at 5 p.m. and screenings to follow at 6 p.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Street).

The film and video students have produced a minimum of seven films during their studies. Their talent, experience and hard work show in these final films. Students will screen comedies, horror films, documentaries, drama and action films. Budgets range from “none” to “low,” but that doesn’t mean that first-rate production values, accomplished cinematography and some guaranteed gems won’t be seen at this event.

TechServ to Host Super Smash Bros. Tournament Tomorrow

TechServ will host a Super Smash Bros. tournament on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 6 p.m. in room 149, University Crossings (32nd and Market Streets).

The tournament will feature the newly released Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well as an old-school Super Mario Kart tournament.

The tournament is free and open to all Drexel undergraduates.

Lung Cancer Awareness Carnival Rescheduled for Monday

The Lung Cancer Awareness Carnival has been rescheduled due to inclement weather. It will be held Monday, May 19, 2008, from noon to 5 p.m. in The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).

The Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and Drexel Athletics invite students to come out and support this worthwhile cause.

The carnival will provide students with free food and entertainment, including bouncy boxing, a dunk tank, raffle prizes and music, all in an effort to raise money for Fox Chase Cancer Center and Laura Koch, who was recently diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer.

Koch is a former Drexel soccer player, member of Phi Mu and wife of Steve Koch, director of Intramural Sports.

MEM Seminar Today: Rails to Trails

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics will present "Successful Strategies for Trail Development" today, May 16, 2008, from 1 to 2 p.m. in room 162, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Tom Sexton and Carl Knoch, of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, will provide a complete overview of the required resources and strategies for building rail-trails, including funding, acquisition, design and management. Special mention will be given to the Conservancy’s work in Camden, New Jersey. The U.S. has more than 15,000 miles of open rail-trails and Pennsylvania has more than 1000 miles.

Help Stop Sexual and Relationship Violence on Campus

The Campus Community Consortium to Reduce Violent Crimes Against Women will host training sessions to prepare faculty and staff to become sexual and relationship violence resource consultants on the following dates:

Participants must attend all four sessions in order to become resource consultants. Individuals must confirm that they are able to attend the entire training course before registering.

This training provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence and stalking, the dynamics associated with each of these crimes in a campus setting and on how to provide compassionate support and resource information to victims in need.

Faculty and staff from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of the Sciences will also participate in the training sessions.

A working lunch will be served each day of the training.

The deadline to register is Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 5 p.m.

International Travel Awards for Faculty and Graduate Students

The Office of International Programs announces the International Travel Awards (ITA) for University faculty and graduate students.

The competitive International Travel Award Program provides assistance to full-time faculty and graduate students for participation in an international conference outside the United States within the participant's professional field.

The application deadline for travel between August 1 and November 30, 2008, is Thursday, June 26, 2008.

Information Session: Study Abroad Opportunities in Australia

Africana Studies Lecture: Race, Geneology and DNA

Africana Studies, in the College of Arts and Sciences, will host a lecture with Chris Rabb (above) on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. in room 4014, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Rabb is a consultant, social commentator " netroots " activist and a principal with Visceral Ventures LLC . His professional specialties center on effective means of targeting and engaging various constituencies , including: voters, consumers and other groups within predominantly African American communities. Rabb has been featured on C-SPAN and NPR as well as in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and U.S. News and World Report. He will discuss the study of race and genealogy using emerging DNA technologies.
