SCDC Announces 2nd Annual Johnson & Johnson Ice Cream Social

Representatives from Johnson & Johnson will host the second annual Johnson & Johnson Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the 3rd floor atrium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Street).

Students can enjoy making their own ice cream sundaes and networking with representatives from Johnson & Johnson, including Dominic Caruso ’80, CFO of Johnson & Johnson and a Drexel alumnus.

Students will learn about Johnson & Johnson, have an opportunity to ask questions, enjoy networking with fellow students and company representatives and have multiple chances to win prizes.

Drexel Musician Jonah Delso Featured Tonight at LNS

Late Night Series (LNS) Philadelphia, a weekly open-mic sponsored by the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, will feature Drexel's own Jonah Delso today, May 15, 2008 at 8:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Creese Student Center (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Delso, a student in Drexel's Music Industry Program, counts Elliott Smith, Wilco,and My Morning Jacket among the influences for his acoustic folk/indie music.

"Titans of Technology" with Governor Bill Richardson on May 19

The Eastern Technology Council will present "Titans of Technology," a keynote address and moderated panel discussion, on Monday, May 19, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Keynote speaker for the event will be Bill Richardson (above), governor of New Mexico. Governor Richardson’s talk, “Energy: A Flashpoint for Change,” will address the significance of oil and energy in economic, diplomatic and strategic terms. He regards energy, its uses, its sources and its stability as a cornerstone for building the future and the security of this country and the world. As Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration, he laid the foundation for an aggressive strategy to move the nation away from dependency on foreign oil, toward renewable energy sources and securing our national laboratories.

Registration is required for this event. The registration fee is $25 for ETC members and $35 for non-members. There is no fee for Drexel students, faculty and staff with a valid I.D.

"Celebrate Health" Fair Volunteers Still Needed

The Office of Government and Community Relations will present the 10th Annual “Celebrate Health” Fair on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from noon to 3 p.m. at the West Philadelphia Community Center (3512 Haverford Avenue).

Volunteers are still needed for this event. Those interested in volunteering should call Meghan Foran at 215-895-2102 or email mf89@drexel.edu.

The fair is presented in partnership with community leaders, Powelton Village Civic Association, Mantua Community Improvement Committee and 3rd District Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell

All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

More than 40 tables of health information and screenings will be available. Participating local community, faith and civic organizations will offer community members information about their services. 

The fair is presented in a festive environment that includes music, mascots and children’s activities. All attendees will receive a free t-shirt, lunch and raffle ticket for a chance to win donated gifts.

Reception to Honor Joseph Casey on Monday

Dr. David A. Ruth, dean of students, invites the members of the University community to attend a reception honoring Joseph Casey (above), assistant dean of multicultural programs and special projects, on Monday, May 19, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. outside the Pearlstein Gallery, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

Casey will retire from Drexel at the end of May after over 22 years of distinguished service.

During his tenure, Casey founded the ACT 101 program (Academic Enrichment Services), served as the assistant director of the Mental Health Associated Degree Program and taught at the assistant professor level. In 2000, Casey was appointed director of multicultural programs and special projects for the Center City Hahnemann Campus and in 2004, he became the assistant dean for multicultural programs for both DUCoM and Drexel. When students and colleagues speak of him, they describe his gift for building relationships across the university, which have enabled him to create programs and traditions built upon collaboration.

Lung Cancer Awareness Carnival Rescheduled

The Lung Cancer Awareness Carnival has been rescheduled due to inclement weather. It will be held Monday, May 19, 2008, from noon to 5 p.m. in The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).

The Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and Drexel Athletics invite students to come out and support this worthwhile cause.

The carnival will provide students with free food and entertainment, including bouncy boxing, a dunk tank, raffle prizes and music, all in an effort to raise money for Fox Chase Cancer Center and Laura Koch, who was recently diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer.

Koch is a former Drexel soccer player, member of Phi Mu and wife of Steve Koch, director of Intramural Sports.

Physics Department to Present Seminar Today: "Ultrafast Optical Studies of Condensed Matter Systems"

The Department of Physics will host a seminar, "Ultrafast Optical Studies of Condensed Matter Systems" today, May 15, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in room 919, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Marshall Onellion (above), professor of physics, University of Wisconsin-Madison, will be the speaker.

Dr. Onellion's current research is concentrated on electronic properties of correlated electron systems, including high-temperature superconductors, magnetic (multi)layers, magnetic-superconductor perovskite layers, metal-insulator transition systems and lower dimensional systems. Dr. Onellion is co-author with Steven Fortney of the book Seeking Truth: Living with Doubt.

TechServ to Host Super Smash Bros. Tournament

TechServ will host a Super Smash Bros. tournament on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 6 p.m. in room 149, University Crossings (32nd and Market Streets).

The tournament will feature the newly released Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well as an old-school Super Mario Kart tournament.

Great Works Symposium to Present: "Current Topics in Basic Science Research"

The Spring 2008 Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) on "Modern Medicine" will present a panel "Current Topics in Basic Science Research" today, May 15, 2008, from 6 to 7:20 p.m. in room 108, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Donna Murasko, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Guest panelists are Dr. Kenneth Blank, vice provost for research; Dr. Mary K. Howett, professor and chair, Department of Biosciences and Biotechnology; and Dr. Michele Marcolongo, associate professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering and associate vice provost for research.

The symposium will address a variety of topics, including: the chain of events that leads from the development of a hypothesis or theory to the application for research funding; the publication and recognition of new discoveries; the epistemic challenges and rewards of current scientific methods and the changing relationship between biotech companies and major research universities.

Computer Science Lecture: Building Search and Machine Learning Techniques

The Department of Computer Science will present "Building Search and Machine Learning Techniques for Discovery of Novel Biology in the Genomic Era" on Monday, May 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 153, University Crossings (32nd and Market Streets).

Dr. Olga Troyanskaya (above right), Princeton University, will be the speaker.  This lecture is part of the Computer Science Colloquium Series.

This talk will focus on recent work in developing robust and accurate methods for analysis of functional genomics data, including a search algorithm for large microarray compendia and a Bayesian system for integration of diverse functional genomic data into interaction networks.

Biomedical Engineering to Present Seminar: "The Development of Translational Approaches to Medicine"

The School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems will present a seminar "The Development of Translational Approaches to Medicine: Pain" on Friday, May 16, 2008 at 4 p.m. in room 208, Matheson Hall (32nd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets).

The speaker will be Dr. James E. Barrett (above), professor of pharmacology and physiology.

The seminar will highlight the evolution of translational medicine and research, discuss current concepts and approaches within the present regulatory guidelines and focus on translational medicine with an emphasis on the development of pain therapeutics.

This seminar is open to all students, faculty and staff.
