Drexel Green Presentation Today: Green Locomotion

The Committee for Sustainability (Drexel Green) will host a community presentation “Buses, Bikes, Cars, Trains and Feet: What is Drexel Doing to Promote Green Locomotion?” today, May 14, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Are we using biodiesel or considering all hybrid (or better) cars? Are there better ways for Drexel to be moving its people around? Should the University play a larger role in public transportation? These are some of the issues that will be addressed in a public forum, which will include a half-hour devoted to audience participation.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend.

Lunch will be provided. RSVP to studentlife@drexel.edu.

The Drexel Committee for Sustainability is a task force of students, faculty and staff working in six areas to review and evaluate all aspects of operations, buildings and student life on campus, with the objective of developing a five-year plan to make Drexel a more sustainable environment.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble to Present "Coffee and Jazz"

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble will present its annual concert, “Coffee and Jazz,” on Friday, May 16, 2008 at 8:20 p.m. in the Faculty Club, 6th floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

The concert will feature jazz made famous by music legends Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald.

Complimentary coffee and dessert will be served.

This event is open to the public.

Save the Date: 29th Annual Drexel Fashion Show on May 28

The Fashion Design and Design & Merchandising Programs in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design present the 29th annual Drexel Fashion Show on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 5 p.m. and at 8 p.m. at the Wanamaker Building (100 Penn Square East).

Evening wear, men’s and women’s sportswear, children’s wear, swim wear and lingerie from the collections of graduating students in fashion design will be modeled on the runway by professional models.

Students from the Design & Merchandising Program produce the annual Drexel Fashion Show as well as the full-color d&m Magazine, created expressly for the show.

Prizes for top collections and single designs are awarded by major designers and retailers, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Lily Pulitzer, Motherswork and Joan Shepp. 

Tickets are $25 for the 5 p.m. show and $50 for the 8 p.m. show, which includes a reception.

MEM Special Seminar Presentation: Rails to Trails

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics will present “Successful Strategies for Trail Development” on Friday, May 16, 2008 from 1 to 2 p.m. in room 162, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Tom Sexton and Carl Knoch, of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, will provide a complete overview of the required resources and strategies for building rail-trails, including funding, acquisition, design and management. Special mention will be given to the Conservancy’s work in Camden, New Jersey. The U.S. has more than 15,000 miles of open rail-trails and Pennsylvania has more than 1000 miles.

Register Now: Co-op Symposium with Raj Gupta and Mark Schweiker on June 27

President Papadakis (above left) has announced that the University will host the National Commission for Cooperative Education’s Tenth Annual Corporate Symposium, “The War for Diverse and Global Talent,” on Friday, June 27, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Papadakis, chair of the National Commission for Cooperative Education, also announced the keynote speakers for the symposium: Raj. J. Gupta (above center), former Drexel trustee and alum (MBA ’71), chairman and CEO, Rohm and Haas Company and Mark Schweiker (above right), president and CEO, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

The symposium will feature a morning keynote address by Mark Schweiker, “How Winning Regions Develop a Skilled Workforce” and a luncheon keynote address by Raj Gupta “Recruiting, Developing and Retaining Talent in Today’s Global Economy.”

There will be a panel of HR executives discussing best HR practices, moderated by Adele Barbato, Drexel’s senior vice president for human resources.

There will also be a panel with presidents of several prominent cooperative education colleges and universities, in an interactive session with representatives from the corporate world, discussing the issues addressed in the keynote speeches, issues relevant to the future of cooperative education and ways in which higher education is strengthened through partnerships with business and industry.

The cost is $125 per registrant and $75 for each additional registrant.

CoE and Student Chapter IEEE to Sponsor HD Broadcast of Eschenbach's Final Concert

College of Engineering and the student chapter of IEEE will sponsor a high-definition broadcast of conductor Christoph Eschenbach’s (above) final concert as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra on Friday, May 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Eschenbach closes the 2007-08 season with the final two symphonies of Franz Schubert. The two movements of the tenderly lyrical Unfinished Symphony set a wistful and nostalgic tone, which is then resolved by the valedictory strains of the Symphony in C Major.

Prior to the concert, at 1:30 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium, Dr. Youngmoo Kim, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will give a talk “The Technology Behind the Broadcast.”

"Titans of Technology" with Governor Bill Richardson on May 19

The Eastern Technology Council will present "Titans of Technology," a keynote address and moderated panel discussion, on Monday, May 19, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Keynote speaker for the event will be Bill Richardson (above), governor of New Mexico. Governor Richardson’s talk, “Energy: A Flashpoint for Change,” will address the significance of oil and energy in economic, diplomatic and strategic terms. He regards energy, its uses, its sources and its stability as a cornerstone for building the future and the security of our country and the world. As Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration, he laid the foundation for an aggressive strategy to move our nation away from dependency on foreign oil, toward renewable energy sources and securing our national laboratories.

Registration is required for this event. The registration fee is $25 for ETC members and $35 for non-members. There is no fee for Drexel students, faculty and staff with a valid I.D.

The College of Arts and Sciences will present a Dinner and Discussion at Drexel (D3),"A Case Study in Critical Media Thinking," based on media scholar and critic Marda Dunsky's new book, Pens and Swords: How the American Mainstream Media Report the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict today, May 14, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall, Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dunsky's presentation will examine how media omissions affect:

The School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems will present a seminar "The Development of Translational Approaches to Medicine: Pain" on Friday, May 16, 2008 at 4 p.m. in room 208, Matheson Hall (32nd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets).

The speaker will be Dr. James E. Barrett (above), professor of pharmacology and physiology.

The seminar will highlight the evolution of translational medicine and research, discuss current concepts and approaches within the present regulatory guidelines and focus on translational medicine with an emphasis on the development of pain therapeutics.

"Celebrate Health" Fair Volunteers Still Needed

The Office of Government and Community Relations will present the 10th Annual “Celebrate Health” Fair on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from noon to 3 p.m. at the West Philadelphia Community Center (3512 Haverford Avenue).

The fair is presented in partnership with community leaders, Powelton Village Civic Association, Mantua Community Improvement Committee and 3rd District Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell
