Drexel Green Sustainability Presentation Tomorrow:  Green Locomotion

The Committee for Sustainability (Drexel Green) will host a community presentation “Buses, Bikes, Cars, Trains and Feet: What is Drexel Doing to Promote Green Locomotion?” on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from noon to 1 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Are we using biodiesel or considering all hybrid (or better) cars? Are there better ways for Drexel to be moving its people around? Should the University play a larger role in public transportation? These are some of the issues that will be addressed in a public forum, which will include a half-hour devoted to audience participation.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend.

The Drexel Committee for Sustainability is a task force of students, faculty and staff working in six areas to review and evaluate all aspects of operations, buildings and student life on campus, with the objective of developing a five-year plan to make Drexel a more sustainable environment.

Student Life will host a symposium/mini-conference, "Higher Education and Student Affairs," today, May 13, 2008, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

This symposium provides the opportunity to learn from colleagues about important trends, best practices and hot issues in higher education.

Save the Date: "Celebrate Health" Fair

The Office of Government and Community Relations will present the 10th Annual “Celebrate Health” Fair on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from noon to 3 p.m. at the West Philadelphia Community Center (3512 Haverford Avenue).

The fair is presented in partnership with community leaders, Powelton Village Civic Association, Mantua Community Improvement Committee and 3rd District Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell

All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

More than 40 tables of health information and screenings will be available. Participating local community, faith and civic organizations will offer community members information about their services. 

The fair is presented in a festive environment that includes music, mascots and children’s activities. All attendees will receive a free t-shirt, lunch and raffle ticket for a chance to win donated gifts.

SCDC to Present Info Session Today: Susquehanna International Group (SIG)

The Steinbright Career Development Center will present an information session about cooperative education opportunities with Susquehanna International Group (SIG) today, May 13, 2008, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the SCDC Conference Room (3201 Arch Street).

SIG is seeking students majoring in business, finance, math, computer science and engineering, however all majors are invited to attend.

Business Student Receives William G. McGowan Scholarship

LeBow College of Business announced that student Erica Hession was awarded the William G. McGowan Scholarship for Entrepreneurship.

The $18,000 scholarship was created by William G. McGowan and is one of the largest single scholarships awarded within LeBow College. It recognizes students who are interested in the study of entrepreneurship and those who plan to pursue careers in start-up and venture companies.

The McGowan Charitable Fund established the McGowan Scholars program, which recognizes the academic achievements and excellence of students pursuing a major offered by an accredited business school. It is designed to encourage leadership ability, interpersonal skills and a significant involvement in academic, campus and community activities. It also recognizes excellence of character, a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial potential.

Judaic Studies Lecture Today: "Death and Dying in Medieval Ashkenaz"

The Judaic Studies Program will present "Death and Dying in Medieval Ashkenaz" today, May 13, 2008, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in room L33, Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets).

Yechiel Schur, lector, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Yale University, will discuss the following questions that reveal the nature of Jewish life in the Middle Ages: How were the dead cared for, from the moment of death until burial? What happened during times of anti-Jewish violence? How did communities address individual requests? Did medieval rituals differ from the rites of ancient Judaism?

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Sigma Psi Zeta to Present "Take Back the Night" Rally

Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc., will present the "Take Back the Night" rally today, May 13, 2008 at 6 p.m. in The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets). (Rain Date: May 20).

This rally/candlelight vigil brings attention to the fight to end domestic violence and honors the memory of victims of domestic violence.

Leadership Weeks Event Today: QuizBowl

Penonni Honors College and LeBow College of Business will host the Honors Business QuizBowl today, May 13, 2008, beginning with check-ins at 5:30 p.m. in the University Club, 6th floor, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets). The game will begin at 6 p.m.

Teams of up to four students will compete. Participants should come prepared to answer business-related questions. Each member of the winning team will receive an iPod.

Light refreshments will be served.

Lecture: "Of Domains and Boundaries: Fluid Phase Coexistence in Biological Membrane Models"

The Department of Chemistry will present "Of Domains and Boundaries: Fluid Phase Coexistence in Biological Membrane Models" on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

The speaker will be Dr. Tobias Baumgart (above), professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Baumgart and his group are developing methods to precisely measure line tension as a function of membrane composition, using micropipette aspiration of giant vesicles, as well as capillary wave spectroscopy of thermal boundary fluctuations. They demonstrate that these two complementary techniques probe different line tension regimes. Dr. Baumgart will discuss the biological relevance of their findings.

This event is open to the public.

President Papadakis was featured in a story broadcast on WPVI-TV’s (ABC-6) “Prime Time” on May 10, 2008, about the Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale. The organization will celebrate its 40th anniversary May 17 during a gala honoring Dr. Papadakis.

A Science News story published May 9, 2008, features Drexel’s and the Drexel University College of Medicine’s use of “Second Life.” Dr. Jean-Claude Bradley, associate professor of chemistry, and Dr. Corey Hart, a research associate in anatomy in the Drexel University College of Medicine, are quoted in the story.
