Save the Date: "Titans of Technology" with Governor Bill Richardson on May 19

The Eastern Technology Council will present "Titans of Technology," a keynote address and moderated panel discussion, on Monday, May 19, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Keynote speaker for the event will be Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico. Governor Richardson’s talk, “Energy: A Flashpoint for Change,” will address the significance of oil and energy, in economic, diplomatic and strategic terms. He regards energy, its uses, its sources and its stability as a cornerstone for building the future and security of our country and the world. As Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Administration, he laid the foundation for an aggressive strategy to move our nation away from dependency on foreign oil, toward renewable energy sources and securing our national laboratories.

Registration is required for this event. The registration fee is $25 for ETC members and $35 for non-members. There is no fee for Drexel students, faculty and staff with a valid I.D.

CAB to Host Lecture Tonight: Frank Warren, Creator of PostSecret.com

The Campus Activities Board will host Frank Warren, creator of the Post Secret Community Art Project, today, May 12, 2008 at 9 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Doors will open at 8:30 p.m.

This event is open to the public.

Tickets are available for purchase at the CAB ticket sales window, located in MacAlister Hall adjacent to the University bookstore (33rd and Chestnut Streets). Tickets are $5 with a valid Drexel I.D. and limited to 2 per I.D.

Warren is a small business owner who started PostSecret.com as a community art project. Since November 2004, Warren has received more than 150,000 anonymous postcards. The Web site won two Webby Awards in 2006 and this year was named Weblog of the Year at the Seventh Annual Weblog Awards. The PostSecret project also received a special award from the National Mental Health Association for raising awareness and funds for suicide prevention.

PRSSA to Host Fourth Annual Dragon Day

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), with the support of the Office of Campus Activities, will host its fourth annual Dragon Day school spirit event on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).

PRSSA encourages all student organizations to show their school spirit by building a dragon that best represents their organization and the University. This year PRSSA will also hold contests for individual students, including the “Dress Like a Dragon” contest. The judging and award ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in front of the amphitheatre.

Free soft pretzels, popcorn, desserts and Italian ice will be served on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the event.

SCDC to Host Info Session: IBM Finance

Steinbright Career Development Center and LeBow College of Business Undergraduate Career Services will present an information session about opportunities with IBM on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, from 6 to 7 p.m. in room 208, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).

Gary Bernstein, IBM vice president of finance transformation and vitality, will discuss cooperative education opportunities in the area of finance at IBM. The company is seeking highly motivated co-op students to fill planning and accounting roles located in the New York tri-state area.

SCDC to Present Info Session: Susquehanna International Group (SIG)

The Steinbright Career Development Center will present an information session about cooperative education opportunities with Susquehanna International Group (SIG) on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the SCDC Conference Room (3201 Arch Street).

SIG is seeking students majoring in business, finance, math, computer science and engineering, however all majors are invited to attend.

CoE and Student Chapter IEEE to Sponsor HD Broadcast of Eschenbach's Last Concert

CoE and the student chapter of IEEE will sponsor a high definition broadcast of conductor Christoph Eschenbach’s (above) final concert as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra on Friday, May 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Eschenbach closes the 2007-08 season with the final two symphonies of Franz Schubert. The two movements of the tenderly lyrical 'Unfinished' Symphony set a wistful and nostalgic tone, which is then resolved by the valedictory strains of the 'Great' C Major Symphony.

Prior to the concert, at 1:30 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium, Dr. Youngmoo Kim, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will give a talk “The Technology Behind the Broadcast.”

Computer Science Lecture Today: "Efficient Model Learning for Reinforcement Learning"

The Department of Computer Science will present "Efficient Model Learning for Reinforcement Learning" today, May 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 153, University Crossings (32nd and Market Streets).

Dr. Michael Littman (above) of Rutgers University will be the speaker. Dr. Littman will address the problem of learning to efficiently make sequential decisions, with a particular focus on generalizing experience without forfeiting formal learning-time guarantees.

This talk is part of the Computer Science Colloquium Series.

HR to Present Physician Lecture Today: Smoking Cessation

Human Resources will hold the next lecture in its series of physician lectures about smoking cessation today, May 12, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Living Arts Lounge, adjacent to Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Teresa Hoang, M.D., will review the effects of smoking on the human body, various modalities to aid in smoking cessation and why it is so difficult to quit.

Dr. Hoang recently joined the Drexel University College of Medicine as an instructor in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine.

This event is free and open to Drexel faculty and staff. A light lunch will be served. Reservations are not necessary.

Goodwin College to Present Lecture: "Digital Forensics and Evidence Recovery"

The Goodwin College of Professional Studies Computing Security and Technology Program will present a lecture "Digital Forensics and Evidence Recovery" on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 61, Center for Automated Technology (3101 Ludlow Street).

The speaker for this event is Lance Hawk, manager, Compliance Crime Investigations and Services, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.

Hawk is responsible for global computer-related crime investigations and related computer forensic analysis for Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. He will demonstrate the latest techniques and software, some of which he has written, to recover digital evidence from computer hard drives. Hawk has been an expert witness and has testified for civil litigation purposes in federal and district courts in the areas of computer forensics and internet tracking and tracing.

Psychology Talk Today: "Sacred Matters: Implications of Spirituality for Health and Well-Being"

The Philadelphia Behavior Therapy Association (PBTA) and the Department of Psychology will host "Sacred Matters: Implications of Spirituality for Health and Well-Being" today, May 12, 2008, from 4 to 5 p.m. in room 61, Center for Automated Technology (3101 Ludlow Street).

Dr. Ken Pargament (above), professor of clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University, will be the speaker. Dr. Pargament has been a leading figure in the effort to bring a more balanced view of religious life to the attention of social scientists and health professionals.

This presentation is open to the public. A reception will follow the talk.

PBTA members will receive a CE credit. The fee for non-members is $25 and $10 for student non-members.

Skin Cancer Educational Study by Appointment

Fox Chase Cancer Center and the University are partnering to conduct a volunteer tanning study on the Drexel campus. Time and place for the volunteer visits will be set up by appointment.

Volunteers should be adults ages 18-24 who do, or have, any of the following:

If volunteers meet these conditions, they may be eligible to participate in the educational/counseling survey and study. The investigators are Dr. Carolyn Heckman, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and Dr. Jackie Kloss, Department of Psychology.

Participants will have personalized photographic assessments. Compensation for time is $5-$15 for each of four sessions and the opportunity to win a $50 raffle at each time-point, plus a small, possible bonus.

CEO Workshop Today: "Teamwork and Sportsmanship"

Dan Simmons, associate director of athletics, will present "Teamwork and Sportsmanship: Applying Values of Sports to Everyday Life" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Why are sports so often referred to as a "laboratory" of real life? What values can be taken from a sports experience and applied to a person's everyday life? This session will look at two important values and how these values can be learned or developed within the sports experience and how they can be applied to an attendee’s life.

New Pearlstein Gallery Exhibition and Opening Reception

The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present a new exhibition, "Master Prints from the Thomas Segal Gallery,"  opening today, May 12, 2008 in the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets). 

Pop art, process art, minimalism, abstract expressionism, neo-dadaism and photo realism all fall under the conceptual framework expressed and highlighted in this show. It features prints created by world-renowned artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWittCy Twombly and Jasper Johns.

There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Chapman Court, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

Dr. Suri collaborated with a Concordia University professor on the study.
