LeBow College to Present "Lunch, Learn and Lead" Today
LeBow College of Business will host a "Lunch, Learn and Lead" presentation featuring Drexel alumnus Bijan Khosrowshahi '83, '86 (above) today, May 9, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 102, Leonard Pearlstein Business Learning Center (33rd and Market Streets).
In 2004, Khosrowshahi became the first and only non-Japanese CEO of a publically traded Japanese insurance company. Since that time as the president and CEO of Fuji Fire and Marine Insurance Company Limited, Khosrowshahi has implemented company-wide changes and strategic initiatives to position Fuji as a differentiated company with a focus on innovative products and high quality customer service.
Khosrowshahi will discuss some of the unique initiatives that have enabled Fuji to achieve these results as well as some of the stereotypes regarding Japanese corporations and the Japanese work force.
Lunch will be provided.

CoE to Host 3rd Annual Underwater Robotics Competition This Weekend
The College of Engineering will host the 3rd annual Greater Philadelphia Sea Perch Challenge on Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets). Registration will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.
The Greater Philadelphia Sea Perch Challenge is an underwater robotics competition to test the engineering skills of middle school, high school and community college students. Teams will compete in the U.S. Navy-funded competition to win recognition for design excellence, presentation and teamwork.
The U.S. Navy supports the competition to increase interest in robotics, science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
All students, faculty and staff are welcome to enter and attend the event.

Center for Civic Engagement Recruiting for Community Scholars Program
The Center for Civic Engagement is currently recruiting Drexel Community Scholars. The DCS is a cadre of student leaders that commit themselves to a year of service, putting their skills to work and making an impact in the public life of the community. They serve as liaisons between the CCE and community partners and will receive leadership training through an array of programs and workshops made available through the CCE.
Eligible students can use federal work study funds as a DCS. Students who complete benchmarks of distinguished community service and leadership training are eligible for Eli Segal Education Awards of up to $1,250 through the AmeriCorps Program. U.S. citizens and/or U.S. nationals are eligible to apply. There are opportunities for international students to become Drexel Community Scholars in the coming year as well.
The deadline for applications is May 15.

2008 Dad Vail Regatta Events Begin Today
The Drexel rowing team will begin racing in the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River today, May 8, 2008. There will be seven Drexel boats entered in the regatta and all will race today with the hopes of securing berths in the championship events on Saturday.
Spectators can watch the races from the Kelly Drive-side of the Schuylkill between Strawberry Mansion and Columbia Avenue Railroad bridges.
Race times are as follows:
Both the men’s and women’s junior varsity eight boats will conclude Drexel’s first day of the Dad Vail Regatta, with the men starting at 4:46 p.m. and the women at 5:21 p.m.

All Are Invited to Spring Fling at the Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday
The College of Engineering, Alumni Relations and the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services will host a Spring Fling at the Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate rowing competition in the U.S., on Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Boathouse Row on Kelly Drive.
A complimentary BBQ lunch will be provided at the Drexel tent (#4), located near the finish line on Kelly Drive, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Reservations are not required.

A Philadelphia Writer's Conference program, “The Minority Retort,” will be a featured event on Saturday, May 10, 2008 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery, located on the 3rd floor, Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
A panel of award-winning African American writers, gay/lesbian writers and writers with disabilities will discuss their adventures and obstacles in the writing world.
This lecture is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is required.

11th Annual Latino Gala on Saturday: "Havana Nights"
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers will host its 11th Annual Latino Gala, "Havana Nights," on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Havana, the city officially named Ciudad de La Habana, is the major port and capital city of Cuba, the birthplace of salsa, rumba and mambo. From Ernest Hemingway to the Buena Vista Social Club, artistic inspiration has been drawn from this jewel of the Caribbean.
Dine with SHPE and enjoy performances by Drexel student organizations, including FISDU, Salsa Con Cache, SHPE and more. Enjoy authentic Cuban cuisine catered by Tierra Colombiana. Attendees can also dance to the rhythmic beats of salsa, merengue and bachata and be transported to the Cuba of decades past.
Attire for this event is semi-formal.
Tickets are $15 per person, $25 per couple and $100 per table of eight.

Free Tickets to See Fireworks Music Ensemble Tonight
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society will present the Fireworks Music Ensemble performing Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring in a new rock-inspired arrangement as well as selections of Frank Zappa's instrumental music today, May 9, 2008 at 8 p.m. in UArt's Gershman Hall (corner of Broad and Pine Streets).
Fireworks, a New York music ensemble that is redefining the chamber music experience for a new generation of listeners, is being hailed as "the hottest classical band in New York." Fireworks may look and sound like a rock band, but it performs with the virtuosity and sensitivity of a classical chamber music ensemble, incorporating classical, rock, jazz and world-music traditions to create innovative, eclectic programs.

Center City Campus Free Movie Tonight: The Golden Compass
The Office of University Student Life will show the movie The Golden Compass today, May 9, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Center City Hahnemann Campus in Geary B Auditorium on the 1st floor, New College Building (245 N. 15th Street).
This movie screening is free for all students and their guests.
Based on a novel by Philip Pullman, The Golden Compass is an exciting fantasy adventure set in an alternative world where people's souls manifest themselves as animals that fight wars and where Gyptians and witches co-exist. At the center of the story is Lyra, a 12 year-old girl who tries to rescue a friend kidnapped by a mysterious organization known as the Gobblers, and winds up on an epic quest to save not only her world but ours as well.

Registration Deadline Today for 3rd Annual Commuter Car Show
Ardmore Toyota, DCom and Formula SAE will host Drexel's 3rd annual Commuter Car Show on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets).
Breakfast will be served at 10 a.m. to kick-off the event. There will also be a box lunch starting at noon, featuring a representative from Firestone who will give tips on car maintenance.
The registration deadline is Friday, May 9, 2008. Only 25 participants will be accepted. To register, email commuters@drexel.edu with entries.

Computer Science to Present: "Efficient Model Learning for Reinforcement Learning"
The Department of Computer Science will present "Efficient Model Learning for Reinforcement Learning" on Monday, May 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 153, University Crossings (32nd and Market Streets).
Dr. Michael Littman (above) of Rutgers University will be the speaker. Dr. Littman will address the problem of learning to efficiently make sequential decisions, with a particular focus on generalizing experience without forfeiting formal learning-time guarantees.

Human Resources to Present Physician Lecture on Smoking Cessation
Human Resources will hold the next lecture in its series of physician lectures about smoking cessation on Monday, May 12, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Living Arts Lounge, adjacent to Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
Teresa Hoang, M.D., will review the effects of smoking on the human body, various modalities to aid in smoking cessation and why it is so difficult to quit.
Dr. Hoang recently joined the Drexel University College of Medicine as an instructor in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine

The Philadelphia Behavior Therapy Association (PBTA) and the Department of Psychology will host the spring 2008 Presentation of "Sacred Matters: Implications of Spirituality for Health and Well-Being" on Monday, May 12, 2008, from 4 to 5 p.m. in room 61, Center for Automated Technology (3101 Ludlow Street).
Dr. Ken Pargament (above), professor of clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University, will be the speaker. Dr. Pargament has been a leading figure in the effort to bring a more balanced view of religious life to the attention of social scientists and health professionals.
