Sustainability Forum at Noon Today: Procurement and Purchasing
The Drexel Committee for Sustainability (Drexel Green) will host a community forum on sustainability issues related to procurement and purchasing today, May 8, 2008 at noon at Mitchell Auditorium in the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).
This is the fifth in a series of six community presentations on topics chosen by students that relate to environmental and sustainability issues.
Dr. Joe Campbell, executive director of University Procurement will discuss ways in which Drexel is handling issues regarding procurement and purchasing in an environmentally respectful way.
Pizza and sodas will be provided for all who RSVP to studentlife@drexel.edu.
The Drexel Committee for Sustainability is a task force of students, faculty and staff working in six areas to review and evaluate all aspects of operations, buildings and student life on campus, with the objective of developing a five-year plan to make Drexel a more sustainable environment.

Spring Fling at the Dad Vail Regatta
The College of Engineering, Alumni Relations and the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services will host a Spring Fling at the Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate rowing competition in the U.S., on Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Boathouse Row on Kelly Drive.
A complimentary BBQ lunch will be provided at the Drexel tent (#4), located near the finish line on Kelly Drive from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Reservations are not required.

Division of Student Life Receives Hermes Award
The Division of Student Life and Administrative Services received a Platinum 2008 Hermes Creative Award in the Design/Holiday Card category for its Drexel University skyline pop-up holiday card.
The brochure for the Rowing Capital Campaign was selected for a gold award in the publications/brochure category, and the Varsity Athletics program guide/ticket booklet was awarded an honorable mention in the publications/program guide category.
The Hermes Creative Awards are presented by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals in an international competition for creative professionals involved in concept, writing and design of traditional and emerging media.

Drexel Marketing Association to Host Pangea Day
The Drexel Marketing Association is hosting the only Pangea Day site in Philadelphia for this global film festival that connects millions of people live through the power of film, music and culture on Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 1 to 6 p.m. in room 111, Nesbit Hall (33rd and Market Streets).
The event is open to the public and will include complimentary refreshments, performances and speakers, along with four hours of live Pangea Day film coverage. There will also be charitable organizations at the event to help raise funds for worldwide causes.

SCDC to Host Info Session on IBM Finance Opportunities
The Steinbright Career Development Center and LeBow College of Business Undergraduate Career Services will present an information session about opportunities with IBM on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, from 6 to 7 p.m. in room 208, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).
Gary Bernstein, IBM vice president of finance transformation and vitality, will discuss cooperative education opportunities in the area of finance at IBM. The people at IBM are focused on the vitality of its finance organization, and seek highly motivated co-op students to fill planning and accounting roles located in the New York tri-state area.

iSchool Lecture Today: "Computer Science in the Information Age"
The College of Information Science and Technology, (The iSchool) will present "Computer Science in the Information Age" with Dr. John Hopcroft (above) of Cornell University today, May 8, 2008 at 4 p.m. in room 109, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).
Dr. Hopcroft is the 1986 Turing Award winner and one of the most influential computer scientists in the world. The last 40 years have seen computer science evolve as a major academic discipline. Today the field is undergoing a major change. Some of the drivers of this change are the Internet, large sensor networks, large quantities of information in digital form and the widespread use of computers for accessing information. This change is requiring universities to revise the content of computer science programs. Save the Date: 2nd Annual CMAA Picnic
The Drexel chapter of the Construction Management Advisory Council is hosting a picnic on Saturday, May 31, 2008, from noon to 5 p.m. at Knights Park in Collingswood, New Jersey.

Drexel Smart House Meeting Today
Students from all majors are invited to attend one of two upcoming Drexel Smart House meetings. There will be a meeting today, May 8 and another on Monday, May 12, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stein Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).
Drexel Smart House is a student-led, multidisciplinary project to construct an urban home to serve as a "living laboratory" for exploring cutting-edge design and technology. Participants will conduct research and develop designs in the areas of environment, energy, interaction, health and lifestyle with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life in the urban residential setting.
The Drexel Smart House will be located at 35th and Race Streets in the heart of Powelton Village and will become home to 10 students. It is an approximately 5,000 square foot house excluding usable basement space.
Come to one of the two meetings and find out about the exciting work of the Smart House teams. We've recently formed five research committees in addition to our four support committees.

Great Works Symposium to Present Panel Today: "Current Topics in Clinical Research"
The Spring 2008 Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) on "Modern Medicine" will present a guest panel on "Current Topics in Clinical Research" to be moderated by Dr. Donna Murasko, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, today, May 8, 2008, from 6 to 7:20 p.m. in room 108, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).
Guest panelists will be Andrew F. Trofa, M.D., director of clinical research, development and medical affairs at GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, Howard J. Eisen, M.D.,Thomas J. Vischer Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Cardiology at Drexel University College of Medicine and Marianne Mann, M.D., pulmonologist and consultant to pharmaceutical companies.
Dr.Trofa, Dr. Eisen and Dr. Mann will address a variety of pressing topics, including the following: the chain of events that leads from the production of a new pharmaceutical, to laboratory testing, to clinical trials and finally to F.D.A. approval; the current design and epistemic limitations of clinical trials; the changing relationship between the pharmaceutical industry and major research universities; the role of direct-to-consumer advertising and drug sales representatives in shaping the medicines doctors prescribe and patients take; plus other topics as they arise.

The Campus Activities Board will sponsor a trip to Citizens Bank Park to see the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, May 14, 2008. Tickets go on sale today, May 8, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. at the CAB office (33rd and Chestnut Streets, adjacent to the University bookstore).

SHPE to Host 11th Annual Latino Gala: "Havana Nights"
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers will host its 11th Annual Latino Gala, "Havana Nights," on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Havana, the city officially named Ciudad de La Habana, is the major port and capital city of Cuba, the birthplace of salsa, rumba and mambo. From Ernest Hemingway to the Buena Vista Social Club, artistic inspiration has been drawn from this jewel of the Caribbean.
Dine with SHPE and enjoy performances by Drexel student organizations, including FISDU, Salsa Con Cache, SHPE and more. Enjoy authentic Cuban cuisine catered by Tierra Colombiana. Attendees can also dance to the rhythmic beats of salsa, merengue and bachata and be transported to the Cuba of decades past.
Attire for this event is semi-formal.
Tickets are $15 per person, $25 per couple and $100 per table of eight.

Free Tickets to See Fireworks Music Ensemble
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society will present the Fireworks Music Ensemble performing Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring in a new rock-inspired arrangement as well as selections of Frank Zappa's instrumental music on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 8 p.m. in UArt's Gershman Hall (corner of Broad and Pine Streets).
Fireworks, a New York music ensemble that is redefining the chamber music experience for a new generation of listeners, is being hailed as "the hottest classical band in New York." Fireworks may look and sound like a rock band, but it performs with the virtuosity and sensitivity of a classical chamber music ensemble, incorporating classical, rock, jazz and world-music traditions to create innovative, eclectic programs.

LeBow College of Business to Present "Lunch, Learn and Lead"
LeBow College of Business will present "Lunch, Learn and Lead" featuring Drexel alumnus Bijan Khosrowshahi '83, '86 (above), on Friday, May 9, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 102, Leonard Pearlstein Business Learning Center (33rd and Market Streets).
In 2004, Khosrowshahi became the first and only non-Japanese CEO of a publically traded Japanese insurance company. Since that time as the president and CEO of Fuji Fire and Marine Insurance Company Limited, Khosrowshahi has implemented company-wide changes and strategic initiatives to position Fuji as a differentiated company with a focus on innovative products and high quality customer service. During the same period, Japanese media ranked Fuji's products and services as number one in the industry. International as well as domestic rating agencies have also upgraded Fuji to an A-class insurer with enhanced financial strength and growing product lines.
Khosrowshahi will discuss some of the unique initiatives that have enabled Fuji to achieve these results as well as some of the stereotypes regarding Japanese corporations and the work force.

Entrepreneurial Association to Host Co-founders of PhindME Today
The Drexel Entrepreneurial Association will host Chuck Sacco and Doug Bellenger, co-founders of PhindMe, today, May 8, 2008, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Wedge Room of the Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology (3225 Arch Street).
A brief networking reception will follow.
PhindMe is a mobile marketing company with a focus on bringing local businesses to mobile quickly through easy to use content management, customer relationship management and social networking tools.
PhindMe LLC was then formed when it was determined that not only restaurants, but all types of local businesses need a better way to reach out to mobile consumers.
Sacco and Bellenger will discuss their path to company launch and explore the future of mobile integration and marketing.
