Chemistry Department Lecture Today: "Strategies for the Synthesis of Solubilized [n]Phenacenes of Unprecedented Lengths"
The Department of Chemistry will present "Strategies for the Synthesis of Solubilized [n]Phenacenes of Unprecedented Lengths" today, May 7, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).
Dr. Frank B. Mallory (above), professor of chemistry, Bryn Mawr College, will be the speaker.
In recent years, the research in Dr. Mallory's group has focused on the synthesis of highly elongated (and previously unknown) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for which the group has invented the name [n]phenacenes. Dr. Mallory's synthesis strategy for the elongation of [n]phenacenes involves iterative Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons couplings followed by photocyclizations of the resulting diarylethylenes as the main carbon-carbon bond-forming steps. The next target the group is pursuing is a derivative with n = 15. The talk also will cover their serendipitous discovery during the course of this work of an astonishingly deep-seated photochemical rearrangement.
This event is open to the public.
Refreshments will be served.

In recent years, Dr. Klinghoffer continued to participate in College of Medicine activities, serving on the Legacy Committee and as co-chair of the campaign to build a permanent home for the College Archives. She received numerous awards over her illustrious career and a Chair of Medicine at DUCoM was established in her honor.
Dr. Klinghoffer was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Wenger, M.D., a professor of psychiatry at MCP. She is survived by her son, Robert Wenger, M.D., a 1983 graduate of MCP, and his wife, Sharon, who graduated from MCP in 1984; a grandson, Isaac; and nieces and nephews.

CoAS Dean's Seminar Series Today: "Computerized Language Interventions for Autism"
The College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Seminar Series will present "Computerized Language Interventions for Autism" today, May 7, 2008, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd & Chestnut Streets).
Dr. Felicia Hurewitz, assistant professor, Department of Psychology, will address whether or not typical language development can inform the design of therapies for children with autism.
Modern linguistic theory, using evidence from a wide range of procedures, suggests that children learn their native language via dedicated mechanisms that facilitate the acquisition process, including an innate faculty for grammar. Use of technology, from simple instructional software to virtual worlds, is proposed as a way of providing the learner with language input without the necessity for social engagement.
This event is free and open to students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be served.
