Lecture Today: "Computer-supported Collaborative Learning"
The College of Information Science and Technology, (The iSchool) will present "Computer-supported Collaborative Learning at The iSchool and at the Math Forum" today, May 6, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. in room 14, Rush Building (33rd Street, north of Market Street).
Dr. Gerry Stahl (above), associate professor, will be the speaker. The lecture is part of the The iSchool at Drexel's Colloquium Series, sponsored by the College of Information Science and Technology.
The challenges for human-computer interaction (HCI) in education have shifted considerably in recent years with, for example, the rapid growth of the Web, online learning and social networking. New HCI approaches, methods, tools and theories are now required to analyze and understand interactions and learning of online groups. This presentation raises a number of issues related to the new design and pedagogy challenges, and presents the approach of the Virtual Math Teams (VMT) project, which has tried to address these issues.

The iSchool to Present Lecture: "Computer Science in the Information Age"
The College of Information Science and Technology, (The iSchool) will present "Computer Science in the Information Age" with Dr. John Hopcroft (above) of Cornell University on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 4 p.m. in room 109, Matheson Hall (32nd and Market Streets).
Dr. Hopcroft is the 1986 Turing Award winner and one of the most influential computer scientists in the world. The last 40 years have seen computer science evolve as a major academic discipline. EMBA Alumni Board Volunteers Help Junior Achievement Group Make a Difference
The Drexel Executive MBA (EMBA) Alumni Board recently partnered for the second year with Junior Achievement of Delaware Valley to mentor a group of high school students as they organized and operated a real company, called NUF Said, sold stock and developed, marketed and sold its product.
Each EMBA Alumni Board volunteer chose at least one day to come in and teach the students about a different aspect of business.
Serge LeHenaff '07 suggested "fun" spelled backwards as part of the company's name after the group decided to sell t-shirts with humorous messages on them. The idea was also incorporated into the t-shirt design.
The students decided that for every t-shirt sold they would donate $1 to the local nonprofit organization Women in Transition, which provides empowerment counseling, referrals and advocacy to women in Philadelphia who are endangered by domestic violence and substance abuse.
Above, Dr. George Tsetsekos, dean of the LeBow College of Business, rings the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Friday, September 29, 2006, with students from the Executive MBA program.

Chemistry Department to Present Lecture: "Strategies for the Synthesis of Solubilized [n]Phenacenes of Unprecedented Lengths"
The Department of Chemistry will present "Strategies for the Synthesis of Solubilized [n]Phenacenes of Unprecedented Lengths" on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).
Dr. Frank B. Mallory (above), professor of chemistry, Bryn Mawr College, will be the speaker.
In recent years, the research in Dr. Mallory's group has focused on the synthesis of highly elongated (and previously unknown) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for which the group has invented the name [n]phenacenes. Dr. Mallory's synthesis strategy for the elongation of [n]phenacenes involves iterative Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons couplings followed by photocyclizations of the resulting diarylethylenes as the main carbon-carbon bond-forming steps. The next target the group is pursuing is a derivative with n = 15. The talk also will cover their serendipitous discovery during the course of this work of an astonishingly deep-seated photochemical rearrangement.
This event is open to the public.
Refreshments will be served.
