Webcast Discussion with President of Latvia

The College of Arts and Sciences and International Area Studies will host a webcast discussion with Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga (above) today, May 3, 2007, at noon in Room 61, Center for Automation Technology (31st and Market Streets).

Latvia recently joined NATO and the European Union (EU). Drexel students have the opportunity to submit discussion questions to President Vike-Freiberga by emailing them in advance to Connie Steel at cms32@drexel.edu.

President Vaira Vike-Freiberga has helped lead her nation of 2.3 million people into NATO and the EU. She was born in Latvia shortly before World War II, spent her youth in refugee camps in Germany and Morocco. She settled in Canada at the age of 16. Following Latvian independence from the former Soviet Union, President Vike-Freiberga returned to Riga and was elected president. She is presently in her second four-year term as head of state.

A D3 Event: Running in High Heels

The College of Arts and Sciences presents Running in High Heels, a D3 event that will take place Thursday, May 3, 2007, at 5 p.m. at the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery (third floor, Main Building, 32nd and Chestnut Streets).

There will be a showing of the 50-minute version of the film Running in High Heels, followed by dinner and a discussion of women, politics, feminism, fashion and tradition.

This event is free and open to the public.

Greater Philadelphia Sea Perch Challenge

The College of Engineering will hold its second annual Sea Perch Challenge on Saturday, May 5, 2007, at 9 a.m. at the Drexel Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets).

Forty-one teams of middle school, high school and community college students will race underwater robots (sea perches) in the Drexel Athletic Center pool.

Third Annual Critical Care Symposium: Protocols in Critical Care

Drexel University College of Medicine and Hahnemann University Hospital will host the third annual Critical Care Symposium "Protocols in Critical Care" on Thursday, May 3, 2007, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Geary Auditorium, first floor, Center City Hahnemann Campus (245 N. 15th Street). All visitors must to sign in at the security desk when entering the building. A continental breakfast and buffet lunch will be served.

"Protocols in Critical Care" will feature the following events:

This event is free and open to the public. Physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory practitioners and nutritionists may receive 3.50 credit hours for participating.

MEM Seminar: "Bluff-body Stabilized Premixed Flames"

Dr. Baki Cetegen, professor and department head in mechanical engineering at the University of Connecticut, will speak on "Static and Dynamic Stability of Bluff-body Stabilized Premixed Flames" on Friday, May 4, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the MEM Seminar Room, Room 162, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Street).

The lecture is part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics' Spring Seminar Series. Dr. Cetegen will examine flame behavior under fuel lean combustion conditions. Many pollution reduction schemes are based on fuel lean combustion.

Drexel Chess Team Wins Against Haverford

The Drexel chess team won a match against Haverford College, with a score of 3-2, on Saturday, April 28, 2007. Members of the team who participated in the match were Daniel Jordon, Kevin Ricci, Jordan Shenk, Charles Gibson, and Robert Pisch.

The Drexel Chess Club meets on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. in the bookstore lobby (MacAlister Hall, 33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Thursday evening chess games are free and open to all Drexel community members.

CEO Offers Two Workshops Today

Creating Excellent Organizations (CEO) will offer two workshops today, May 3, 2007.

1) "Character and Sports" will be held twice, from noon to 1:30 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Myers Hall Tutor Lounge (33rd and Arch Streets). Dan Simmons, associate director of athletics, will look at the value of sports in building and exemplifying character.

2) "Seven Effective Habits of Drexel Student Leaders" will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Conference Room D, Greenawalt Student Development Center, lower level of the Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets). Josh Cohen, president of Weekend Warriors; Jason Miller, president of Drexel Marketing Association; and John Cooke, director of Campus Activities, will discuss adapting leadership theory (e.g., Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People) to one's personal leadership style.

Spring Jam to Be Held at the Armory

Campus Activities Board (CAB) will hold Spring Jam 2007 featuring Jack's Mannequin and special guest on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at the Armory (33rd Street north of Market Street). Doors open at 3 p.m.

The event is free for students with a valid undergraduate ID. Tickets for graduate students, faculty, and staff are $5 with valid Drexel ID. Non-Drexel guest tickets are $5, with a limit of one guest ticket per undergraduate student.

Tickets can be purchased at the CAB office or at the door. The CAB office is located in MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets), around the corner from the bookstore. Ticket sales hours are Monday to Friday, noon to 1 p.m., and Monday to Thursday 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. CAB accepts Ultima Funds.

Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie to Speak on Friday

Novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (above), a former Drexel University student who was featured in the May 2007 issue of Jane magazine's "30 Under 30," will be reading her fiction and giving an informal talk on Friday, May 4, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the Living Arts Lounge, Creese Student Union Complex (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's first novel, Purple Hibiscus, won the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book (2005). Her second novel, Half a Yellow Sun, which is set during the civil war in Nigeria, won critical acclaim, including being named one of the top books of 2006 by The New York Times. Her short fiction has appeared in Granta, Prospect, The New Yorker, Per Contra and The Iowa Review among other literary journals. She received an O. Henry Prize in 2003.
