Have Your Questions Answered Today at "Conversations with University Administrators"

Students who want to make a difference at the University or have a question that requires an answer from a member of the University’s administration should attend "Conversations with University Administrators" today, April 29, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Van Rensselaer Living Room (3320 Powelton Avenue).

Representatives from Student Life, the Provost's Office, the Bursar's Office, Financial Aid and Public Safety, among others, will be there to answer questions and listen to concerns.

Complimentary lunch will be provided. All students are encouraged to attend.

Sigma Xi to Present Lecture: "The Science Glass Ceiling"

The Drexel chapter of Sigma Xi, in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University, will present "The Science Glass Ceiling: Academic Women Scientists and Their Struggle to Succeed" today, April 29, 2008 at 4 p.m. at Connelly Auditorium in the Hamilton Building (11th and Locust Streets).

Dr. Sue V. Rosser (above), dean and professor, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech will be the speaker.

There will be a reception before the lecture at 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Lecture at DUCoM Today: "Professional Responsibility and Humanism in the Age of Genomics"

Office of Professional Studies in the Health Sciences and the Faculty Development Office in the Drexel University College of Medicine will present the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Lectureship on Humanism and Professionalism in Medicine today, April 29, 2008, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Geary B Auditorium, New College Building (245 N. 15th Street).

The lecture, “Professional Responsibility and Humanism in the Age of Genomics,” will be given by Dr. Donald F. Schwarz (above), deputy mayor of health and opportunity and health commissioner of Philadelphia.

  A reception will follow the lecture from 5 to 5:30 p.m. in Geary Lobby.

There will be a video-conference of the lecture at 4 p.m. in Auditorium B, Queen Lane Medical Campus (2900 Queen Lane).

Men's Lacrosse to Host Villanova in CAA Tournament Semi-finals

The nationally ranked men’s lacrosse team will host Villanova in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. at the Vidas Athletic Complex (43rd Street and Powelton Avenue).

The game pits top-seeded Dragons, who finished the regular season as CAA co-champions, against the No. 4 seed Villanova, a team that the Dragons defeated 10-7 in the regular season finale this past Saturday.

The Dragons finished the season with a 12-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in conference play to lock up a share of the regular season CAA championship for a second straight year. This will be the Dragons’ third trip to the CAA Tournament and the second year in a row that Drexel has played host to the competition.

There are no advance ticket sales for this game.  All tickets must be purchased at the event. Individual tickets are $5 for adults and free for children under 12.  Students with a valid I.D. will also receive free admission. Parking for the event is free at the Vidas Athletic Complex.

Center for Civic Engagement Hosts Blood Drive Today

The Center for Civic Engagement, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, will host a blood drive today, April 29, 2008 from 2 to 6 p.m. on the Red Cross Donor Bus, which will be parked on Market Street outside of the Law School Building (3320 Market Street).
 
The process will last about an hour from start to finish. Walk-ins will be accepted.

Noted Author/Journalist to Lecture Today on Real Story Behind Luxury Brands

The Design and Merchandising Program in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present noted author and journalist Dana Thomas as the program’s 2008 Distinguished Speaker today, April 29, 2008 at 6 p.m. in Ruth Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

Thomas will discuss her book Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster. As the Paris fashion reporter for Newsweek for 12 years, Thomas developed exceptional contacts among the world's best known designers in the billion-dollar luxury brand business for perfumes, handbags and designer clothing.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

New Employee Orientation Sessions: "Engaging U"

Human Resources will present the new employee orientation program "Engaging U" every Monday (unless otherwise noted) from 9 to 11 a.m. The location will be provided to all registered participants.

All current staff members are welcome to attend this newly revised and improved program. Staff will learn what new employees are now learning about the University, and may find information that will enhance their own careers. Five seats will be available during each new employee session for current staff members.

Student Life to Host Symposium: Higher Education and Student Affairs

Student Life will host a symposium/mini-conference, "Higher Education and Student Affairs," on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 from 1 to 4 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

This symposium will provide the opportunity to learn from colleagues about important trends, best practices and hot issues in higher education.

The success of this conference depends on all colleagues in the Office of Student Life and across the entire University providing their expertise. Italian Students Organization to Host Pasta Dinner Tonight

The Italian Students Organization will be serving a free pasta dinner open to all Drexel students today, April 29, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room, Caneris Hall (115 N. 32nd Street).

Dinner will be followed by a game of "Jeopardy" on Italian topics. The winner will receive a prize.

Two CEO Workshops Today

Keith M. Cianfrani, Lt. Col. U.S. Army (retired), and owner of the Leadership Development Group, will present "Leadership Training Based on the Military Model" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Keith Cianfrani is the commandant of the Philadelphia Military Academy, where he teaches military leadership. The purpose of the Leadership Development Group is to provide professional leadership training using the U.S. Army's Be-Know-Do Leadership Model. Using this model, Cianfrani will discuss what a leader must be, what a leader must know and how a leader must act. Topics may include: communication, vision and mission, decision making, planning and problem solving.

Jock Sommese, Convergence Homes, will present "Lessons from an Enduring Entrepreneur" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 226, Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

No matter what situation individuals may find themselves in, the lessons learned from entrepreneurial success can help. Attendees may take the entrepreneur's test, assess their own skills and determine methods to improve them. This interactive presentation will demonstrate what makes individuals more successful.

Office of International Programs to Present Discussion on Global Economy and Leadership

The Office of International Programs, in partnership with The America-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Temple University’s  Fox School of Business and the Wharton Israel Club, will present a discussion on Global Economy and Leadership on Monday, May 5, 2008, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery (3rd floor, Main Building, 32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dov Frohman, the founder and former general manager of Intel Israel and the co-author of the new book Leadership the Hard Way will be the featured speaker.

Frohman will share his views on leadership in a global economy from the perspective of why leadership is better learned than taught. The discussion will focus on leadership in today's fast-paced global economy, using Intel's experience in Israel as a model.

A reception and a book signing will follow the presentation.

Storage Space Available for Student Organizations

Student organizations interested in keeping or obtaining office space or an area to store all of the organization's belongings can apply for space through the Space Allocation Committee.

Application Deadline May 15: Study Biodiversity and Conservation in Africa

The Study Abroad Office is accepting applications for a new fall term study-abroad program that offers students the opportunity to study biodiversity and conservation in Africa.

Drexel Biodiversity on Bioko Island takes place in Equatorial Guinea, a Spanish-speaking country, and home to Africa's greatest concentration of endangered primates and to more than 50 unique species of plants. This program offers a unique opportunity to study tropical biodiversity and its conservation. Students will take four or five courses for a total of 18 to 22 quarter credits. Students pay regular Drexel tuition as well as a program fee.

Applications for fall term will be accepted until Thursday, May 15, 2008. Winter term applications are also being accepted. While this program is of particular interest to biology and environmental science students, it is available to all majors.

Engineering Cities Initiative to Present "Technology and Cities in the Information Age"

The Engineering Cities Initiative will host "Technology and Cities in the Information Age" on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 2 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Tschango John Kim, an endowed professor of urban and regional systems at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will be the speaker. This lecture is part of DECI's 2008 Speaker Series.

Cities in ubiquitous spaces, or ubiquitous cities, are defined as cities where public and private services can be delivered and received anywhere and at any time. Dr. Kim will focus on the potential of recently developed information and communication technologies (ICTs) and on the utilization of these technologies in conjunction with emerging pervasive ubiquitous geographic information techniques. He will also discuss the challenges existing cities face in striving for intelligent and sustainable development as they move toward becoming ubiquitous cities.

MCS Society to Present "Test Driven Development in PHP" Today

The Math and Computer Science (MCS) Society will present "Test Driven Development in PHP" with the Philadelphia PHP Meetup Group today, April 29, 2008 at 6 p.m. in room 103, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

The event will feature two presentations and a discussion about Testing in PHP. The speakers for the evening will be Raymond Bokenkamp, senior programmer analyst with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Owen Winkler with Rock River Star, a Philadelphia-area Web development shop that specializes in PHP and Drupal development.

Refreshments will be provided.
