Drexel Team Wins Environmental Protection Agency Award
A team from Drexel is among the winners of the Environmental Protection Agency's “People, Prosperity and the Planet” (P3) Competition. The annual competition plants the seeds for future technologies that are both environmentally-friendly and profitable.
The Drexel team presented a method of producing biodiesel from high free-fatty-acid oils. The winners were announced after the P3 Award competition held at EPA's 4th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., April 20-22. The Expo showcased innovative, cutting-edge technologies designed by the P3 teams along with sustainable policies and technologies developed and implemented by government and state agencies and nonprofit organizations.
This national competition, sponsored by EPA's Office of Research and Development, encourages college students to create sustainable solutions to environmental problems through technological innovation. These sustainable solutions must be environmentally friendly, efficiently use natural resources and be economically competitive. Each P3 award winner receives funding up to $75,000 to further develop their designs and implement them in the field or move them to the marketplace.
Support for the competition includes more than 40 partners in the federal government, industry and scientific and professional societies. This year's Expo was co-sponsored by The Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education and The World Environment Center.
For more information about the project and the winners, go to http://www.epa.gov/P3/multimedia.

Men’s Basketball Receives Second Straight Academic Performance Award
The NCAA announced yesterday, April 24, 2008, that the men’s basketball team has received the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program public recognition award for the second straight season. Drexel is one of just 33 Division I men’s basketball teams out of 341 schools and one of only two schools in the Colonial Athletic Association to earn the award.
The NCAA is honoring Division I sports teams with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The public recognition awards are part of a broad Division I academic reform effort.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The calculation of APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation figures. It provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams that received these awards posted APR scores ranging from 965 to a perfect 1,000. Drexel’s score was 983.
Drexel has graduated every player who has exhausted his eligibility under Head Coach Bruiser Flint, who has just completed his seventh season at the school.
