Noted Civic Leader Walter D'Alessio to Speak Today: "Getting That First Job"

President Papadakis will present a special event for students, "Getting That First Job," with civic leader, businessman, educator and visionary Walter D' Alessio, Hon '07 (above), today, April 24, 2008, from 4 to 5 p.m. in room 102 of the Leonard Pearlstein Business Learning Center (33rd and Market Streets). A reception will follow the talk.

D'Alessio, vice chairman of NorthMarq Capital and president and CEO of Northmarq's real estate consulting group, NorthMarq Advisors, has more than 45 years of experience in planning, developing and financing major real estate projects in Philadelphia, including 12 years as executive director of the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority and 10 years as executive vice president of the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation.

He has been an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania for more than 20 years and held leadership positions on numerous corporate and non-profit boards during his distinguished career, including his current positions with Brandywine Realty Investment Trust, Exelon Corporation and on the Corporate Governance Center Advisory Board for LeBow College of Business.

Drexel Green Community Presentation Today: "Buildings Systems and Energy Use"

Drexel Green, the sustainability task force led by Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III, will host a community presentation on “Buildings Systems and Energy Use” today, April 24, 2008 from noon to 1 p.m. at Stein Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

This is the third in a series of six community presentations on topics chosen by students that relate to environmental and sustainability issues. Each begins with a 20-30 minute presentation by University administrators responsible for the subject area, followed by 10-15 minutes of questions from student members of the task force and end with questions from and discussion with all those in attendance.

Pizza and sodas will be provided for all who RSVP to studentlife@drexel.edu.

Those who cannot attend will find a link to a webcast of the event on the Drexel Green Web site at http://www.drexel.edu/green. There is also information on the site about various ways to become involved with the work of Drexel Green.

The Drexel Committee for Sustainability (Drexel Green) is a task force of students, faculty and staff working in six areas to review and evaluate all aspects of operations, buildings and student life on campus, with the objective of developing a five-year plan to make Drexel a more sustainable environment.

Students, faculty, administrators and staff are welcome to join the task force and participate in the ongoing work of its committees.

Earth Week Lecture Today: "Climate Change: The Health Response"

Dr. Howard Frumkin (above), director of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at the National Center of Environmental Health, will present a lecture "Climate Change: The Health Response" today, April 24, 2008 at 4:30 p.m., Geary Room A, New College Building (245 N.15th Street).

Dr. Frumkin is an internist, environmental and occupational medicine specialist and epidemiologist. The NCEH/ATSDR works to maintain and improve the health of Americans by promoting a healthy environment and by preventing premature death and avoidable illness and disability caused by toxic substances and other environmental hazards.

Green Technology Expo at the DAC

The Drexel Sierra Club will sponsor a Green Technology Expo on Friday, April 25, 2008 from noon to 2 p.m. outside the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets).

The expo will present various green technologies including a hybrid Toyota from PhillyCarShare and the “human-powered vehicle” with Dr. Bradley Layton, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics. In addition, there will be a display with new technologies to be used in the Drexel Smart House and the Sierra Club will present environmental awareness information.

Earth Week Concert on Saturday: "Rock 4 Roots"

The Sierra Student Coalition will host a concert “Rock 4 Roots” on Saturday, April 26, 2008, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Philadelphia Armory (33rd Street, north of Market Street).

The concert is open to the general public and will feature bands such as:

“Rock 4 Roots” is the culmination of all the events taking place during Earth Week. Attendees are required to present proof of identification at the door and can receive an admission ticket by bringing two recyclable items (glass bottles, aluminum cans, and plastics labeled with a 1 or 2). If attendees bring more than the minimum requirement for admission, they will receive a raffle ticket.

Prizes, including a Martin Guitar package and $100 in Ultima Funds, will be given away in the raffle.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Engineering Cities Initiative to Host Workshop: Wind and Solar Powered Buildings

The Engineering Cities Initiative will host the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's Wind and Solar Powered Buildings workshop on Friday, May 2, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in room 604-5, Bellet Building (1505 Race Street).

The workshop will be led by Steven Strong, who founded Solar Design Associates in 1974 and has earned the firm an international reputation for the pioneering integration of renewable energy systems with environmentally responsive building design.

This visual presentation will explore the design and integration of solar electricity (photovoltaics or PV), solar thermal and wind energy systems in residential, commercial and institutional buildings. The best building examples from Europe, Japan and the U.S. will illustrate innovative design where solar electric elements displace conventional building materials to become an integral part of the architecture. Case studies of zero-energy buildings powered by solar and wind energy will be featured.

The registration fee is $260 for NESEA members and $285 for non-members.

Two CEO Workshops Today

The LeBow College of Business will present "Don't Sell Yourself Short: A Guide to Personal Selling" at 5 p.m. in room 101, Leonard Pearlstein Business Learning Center (33rd and Market Streets).

"Don't Sell Yourself Short" is a time-tested method for developing a plan to get people in front of the "right" people, create value for employers and strategically position the brand of each individual.

The presenter is Burt Brodo, who teaches marketing at LeBow College and has held positions at Xerox Corporation, Litton Industries and Bonwit Teller. He has advised small to mid-size businesses on marketing strategy and brand positioning through Brodo Associates, Ltd. In addition, Brodo is a colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, specializing in meteorology.

Thomas Dahan, program director at the Center for Civic Engagement, will present "Privilege and Citizenship: An Interactive Simulation" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

This workshop will stimulate a discussion about assumptions concerning the rules of society, and attempt to heighten the participants' sensitivity to the privileges (and lack thereof) in this society.

Save the Date: "Celebrate Health" Fair

The Office of Government and Community Relations will present the 10th Annual “Celebrate Health” Fair on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from noon to 3 p.m. at the West Philadelphia Community Center (3512 Haverford Avenue).

The fair is presented in partnership with community leaders, Powelton Village Civic Association, Mantua Community Improvement Committee and 3rd District Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell

All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

More than 40 tables of health information and screenings will be available. Participating local community, faith and civic organizations will offer community members information about their services. 

The fair is presented in a festive environment that includes music, mascots and children’s activities. All attendees will receive a free t-shirt, lunch and raffle ticket for a chance to win donated gifts.

Great Works Symposium to Present Lecture Tonight: "The Nursing Profession"

The Spring 2008 Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) on "Modern Medicine" will present "The Nursing Profession: Past Accomplishments, Persistent Problems, Future Projections" today, April 24, 2008, from 6 to 7:20 p.m. in room 108, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Jean Whelan, Ph.D., R.N., assistant adjunct professor in the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, will talk about the history of the American nursing profession from its roots in the late 19th century to its contemporary status. Dr. Whelan will identify and analyze the significant socio-economic-political contexts that framed the construction of the modern nursing workforce and include topics such as the nurse educational and licensing system, practice issues and the future trajectory of the profession.

College of Law to Present Discussion Today: Kenyan Elections Aftermath

The College of Law will present a discussion, “Aftermath of the Elections in Kenya,” with Edwin Abuya today, April 24, 2008 at 3 p.m. in room 420 of the College of Law Building (3320 Market Street).

Abuya, originally from Kenya, is a visiting professor at Seattle University School of Law.  His research focuses on international asylum, humanitarian and immigration law as well as transitional justice. He has published articles, delivered conference papers and advised international agencies and government on these themes. Professor Abuya also practiced law for several years in Kenya.

CAB to Host Free Movie Screening Tonight: The Spiderwick Chronicles

The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on the bestselling series, takes place at the Spiderwick Estate in New England. It follows the adventures of three children as they encounter a variety of magical creatures.

OCA and Inter-Fraternity Council to Present "Winter in Spring"

The Inter-Fraternity Council and the Office of Campus Activities will present the first annual "Winter in Spring" event on Friday, April 25, 2008 at 5 p.m. at The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).

Snow will fall at Drexel, regardless of the weather. The Quad will be transformed into a winter wonderland with real snow covering the ground. The event will include an evening of sledding, snowman building, snowball throwing and ice skating.

VOICE to Present Extravaganza of Indian Culture: "Yeh Hai Pyaar, Yaar"

Drexel VOICE will present "Yeh Hai Pyaar, Yaar" on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 6 p.m. in the Main Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

This program will showcase the University's four premier collegiate dance teams, along with dance teams from other schools. VOICE will bring together all aspects of India and present them through singing and acting, as well as a play.

Tickets are $10 at the door for general seating and $20 for VIP seating.

Computer Science to Present Lecture Today: "Using Language to Learn Structured Appearance Models"

The Department of Computer Science will present "Using Language to Learn Structured Appearance Models for Image Annotation" today, April 24, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 153, University Crossings (32nd and Market Streets).

Dr. Sven Dickinson (above) of the University of Toronto will be the speaker for this presentation, which is part of the Computer Science Colloquium Series.

Dr. Dickinson will propose a novel algorithm that uses the repetition of feature neighborhoods across training images and a measure of correspondence with caption words to learn meaningful feature configurations (representing named objects). Dr. Dickinson will also introduce a novel graph-based appearance model that captures much of the structure of an object by encoding the spatial relationships among the local visual features.

The lecture, “Professional Responsibility and Humanism in the Age of Genomics” will be given by Dr. Donald F. Schwartz (above), deputy mayor of health and opportunity and health commissioner of Philadelphia.

Torrance Center to Present Lecture: "Group Genius"

The Torrance Center for Creativity and Innovation Lecture Series will present "Group Genius: The Creative Power of Collaboration" on Monday, May 5, 2008 at 6 p.m. in the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets). 

There will be a reception prior to the lecture, beginning at 5 p.m. in the lobby of the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center.

The speaker, Dr. R. Keith Sawyer, a professor of psychology, education, and business at Washington University, will debunk some of the most popular myths about creativity and replace them with new principles. He will reveal that creativity is always collaborative - even when the creative individual is alone. Sawyer will draw on stories about the inventions that changed the world: the ATM, the mountain bike and open source operating systems, among others.

There will be a book signing the following morning, May 6, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Seminar Room, Goodwin College of Professional Studies (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

2008 Kosher for Passover Meals Info

This year, the Passover holiday will be observed through Sunday, April 27, 2008.

Kosher for Passover meals will be served through in the Private Dining Room, Handschumacher Dining Center (32nd and Market Streets).

Passover lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m. and will cost $8. Dinner will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. and will cost $9.

Discounts are available for students on the Gold Meal Plan and for students that RSVP in advance.

Asha for Education and DISHA to Host a Spring Fair

Asha for Education and DISHA will host a spring fair on Sunday, April 27, 2008 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

The spring fair will feature free chai and Indian snacks, a samosa-eating contest at 2 p.m. and free henna tattoos.

In addition, participants will have the opportunity to make cards and murals for children in the Asha-supported schools in India.

Pi Kappa Phi to Host a Game of "Family Feud" Tonight

The brothers of Pi Kappa Phi will host a game of "Family Feud" today, April 24, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Come and watch the sororities battle to see which one is best at this classic game show.

Drexel Softball to Face Towson This Weekend

The Drexel softball team will take on Towson in an important CAA series this weekend with play-off implications on the line. The three-game set includes a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m. at Drexel Field and a game on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Drexel Field (43rd Street and Powelton Avenue). 

On Saturday, the softball team is sponsoring Breast Cancer Awareness Day with all proceeds from apparel and concession sales going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition, Saturday’s games will be announced by Dan Baker, public address announcer of the Philadelphia Phillies and radio voice of Drexel men’s basketball.

On Sunday the Dragons will honor seniors Molly Dacey, Amanda Hastings and Victoria Hanks prior to the game, as part of Senior Day festivities.

The Dragons are 21-16 on the season and in fifth place in the CAA with a 7-8 conference record. With only two conference series left in the season, Drexel is fighting for a spot among the top four teams in the conference, which would qualify the team for the CAA Tournament. The Dragons are one win shy of reaching their highest win total ever in CAA play.

Admission and parking are free at the Vidas Athletic Complex, located on 43rd Street and Powelton Ave.

Deadline May 15: Study Biodiversity and Conservation in Africa

The Study Abroad Office is accepting applications for a new fall term study abroad program that offers students the opportunity to study biodiversity and conservation in Africa.

Drexel Biodiversity on Bioko Island takes place in Equatorial Guinea, a Spanish-speaking country, home to Africa's greatest concentration of endangered primates and to more than 50 unique species of plants. This program offers a unique opportunity to study tropical biodiversity and conservation.

Students will take four or five courses for a total of 18 to 22 quarter credits. Students will pay regular Drexel tuition as well as a program fee.

Applications for Fall Term will be accepted until Thursday, May 15, 2008. Winter Term applications are also being accepted. While this program is of particular interest to biology and environmental science students, it is available to all majors.
