Drexel Votes 2008 thanks all who voted and who worked so hard to get out the vote yesterday. We remind you to visit http://www.drexel.edu/vote2008 and click on the “I Voted” button if you haven't done so already.

That will enable Drexel Votes 2008 to count the total number of people from the University who voted. We want to let our elected representatives know that the Drexel community is a force to be reckoned with because we vote in large numbers. Drexel Votes 2008 will tally every “I Voted” entry through noon on Thursday and report the results to the University community.

Drexel Green Community Presentation: "Buildings Systems and Energy Use"

Drexel Green, the sustainability task force led by Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III, will host a community presentation on “Buildings Systems and Energy Use”, Thursday, April 24, 2008 from noon to 1 p.m. at Stein Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).

This is the third in a series of six community presentations on topics chosen by students that relate to environmental and sustainability issues. Each begins with a 20-30 minute presentation by University administrators responsible for the subject area, followed by 10-15 minutes of questions from student members of the task force and end with questions from and discussion with all those in attendance.

Pizza and sodas will be provided for all who RSVP to studentlife@drexel.edu.

Those who cannot attend can will find a link to a webcast of the event on the Drexel Green Web site at http://www.drexel.edu/green. There is also information on the site about various ways to become involved with the work of Drexel Green.

The Drexel Committee for Sustainability (Drexel Green) is a task force of students, faculty and staff working in six areas to review and evaluate all aspects of operations, buildings and student life on campus, with the objective of developing a five-year plan to make Drexel a more sustainable environment.

Students, faculty, administrators and staff are welcome to join the task force and participate in the ongoing work of its committees.

Earth Week Lecture: "Climate Change: The Health Response"

Dr. Howard Frumkin (above) , director of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at the National Center of Environmental Health, will present a lecture "Climate Change: The Health Response" on Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 4:30 p.m., Geary Room A, New College Building (245 N.15th Street).

Dr. Frumkin is an internist, environmental and occupational medicine specialist and epidemiologist. The NCEH/ATSDR works to maintain and improve the health of Americans by promoting a healthy environment and by preventing premature death and avoidable illness and disability caused by toxic substances and other environmental hazards.

Earth Week Concert on Saturday: "Rock 4 Roots"

The Sierra Student Coalition will host a concert “Rock 4 Roots,” on Saturday, April 26, 2008, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Philadelphia Armory (33rd Street, north of Market Street).

The concert is open to the general public and will feature bands such as:

“Rock 4 Roots,” is the culmination of all the events taking place during Earth Week. Attendees are required to present proof of identification at the door and can receive an admission ticket by bringing two recyclable items (glass bottles, aluminum cans, and plastics labeled with a 1 or 2). If attendees bring more than the minimum requirement for admission, they will receive a raffle ticket.

Prizes, including a Martin Guitar package and $100 in Ultima Funds, will be given away in the raffle.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Noted Civic Leader Walter D'Alessio to Speak: "Getting That First Job"

President Papadakis will present a special event for students, "Getting That First Job," with civic leader, businessman, educator and visionary Walter D' Alessio, Hon '07 (above), on Thursday, April 24, 2008, from 4 to 5 p.m. in room 102 of the Leonard Pearlstein Business Learning Center (33rd and Market Streets). A reception will follow the talk at 5 p.m.

D'Alessio, vice chairman of NorthMarq Capital and president and CEO of Northmarq's real estate consulting group, NorthMarq Advisors, has more than 45 years of experience in planning, developing and financing major real estate projects in Philadelphia, including 12 years as executive director of the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority and 10 years as executive vice president of the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation.

He has been an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania for more than 20 years and held leadership positions on numerous corporate and non-profit boards during his distinguished career, including his current positions with Brandywine Realty Investment Trust, Exelon Corporation and on the Corporate Governance Center Advisory Board for LeBow College of Business.

Lecture Today:  "Colonial 3D Philadelphia"

The Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery Lecture Series will present, “Colonial 3D Philadelphia” with Glen Muschio, associate professor and Chris Redmann, assistant professor in the digital media program today, April 23, 2008, at 6 p.m. in the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery on the third floor of the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

The presentation will include 3D models, animations, video podcasts and 3D scans from 3D Colonial Philadelphia, an ongoing interdisciplinary project intended to become a major research/production center and cultural heritage repository for virtual historical objects and interactive media at the University.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

"Connie Mack and the Philadelphia Athletics" Airs Tonight

“Connie Mack and the Philadelphia Athletics,” taped in the studios of WHYY-TV and featuring Drexel professors Richard Rosen and Bruce Graham will air today, April 23, 2008 at 9 p.m. on Humanities Live, a program on the Y-ARTS Channel (Comcast 241).

For 50 consecutive seasons Connie Mack and the Philadelphia Athletics captured the imagination of the city —before they departed, leaving heartbroken fans. Dr. Rosen, professor of history, is joined by Bruce Graham, instructor in the screenwriting and playwriting program, to talk about one of Philadelphia's most successful sports franchises.

This exploration of Philadelphia history through sports also will look at the big business of baseball and the increasing tension between owners and fans. Not just for admirers of the Philadelphia As, this program is for anyone who relishes the ups and downs of being a Philadelphia sports fan.

Dr. Rosen has taught history for more than 35 years at the University and has been a fan of the Philadelphia Athletics since he was a child growing up in the city. Graham is the author of a dozen produced plays, including The Philly Fan, a one-man romp about the trials and tribulations of a local fan.

Canned Food Drive for PhilAbundance

Physician Assistant Class of 2009 is sponsoring a canned food drive for PhilAbundance today, April 23 through Wednesday, April 30, 2008. All items can be dropped off in the lobby of the New College Building (245 N. 15th Street).

Help fight hunger by donating any non-perishable food. Food items are needed that are packaged in boxes, cans or plastic bottles that do not have to be refrigerated. Suggested items for the food drive include canned tuna, canned beef stew, canned chili and canned pasta or ravioli.

College of Law to Present Discussion: Kenyan Elections Aftermath

The College of Law will present a discussion “Aftermath of the Elections in Kenya,” with Edwin Abuya on Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 3 p.m. in room 420 of the College of Law Building (3320 Market Street).

Abuya, originally from Kenya, is a visiting professor at Seattle University School of Law.  His research focuses on international asylum, humanitarian and immigration law as well as transitional justice. He has published articles, delivered conference papers and advised international agencies and government on these themes. Professor Abuya also practiced law for several years in Kenya.

Panhellenic Council to Host Recruitment Information Sessions

The Panhellenic Council will preseng an informal recruitment information session today, April 23, 2008 from noon to 1 p.m. and again tomorrow, April 24, 2008 from 6 to 7 p.m. in room 302, Ross Commons (34th Street and Powelton Avenue).

Spend the Summer in Crete: Deadline Extended Until May 1

The Drexel study abroad office would like to remind first year students, and those who will not be on co-op, that they can study abroad in Crete during the month of July.

This program, open to students scheduled for vacation during the summer term, offers students the opportunity to literally dive into the Greek experience through an empirical study of its rich, multifaceted culture as it is expressed today on the island of Crete.

Dr. Maria Hnaraki, director of the Greek Studies Program and a native of Crete, has developed a program that provides students with insights into the rituals, customs and practices that are unique to Crete. Students will take two courses which focus on Cretan life, earning a total of 4.5 credits.

SCDC Currently Holding Pre-registration Meetings

Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC) wants students who are scheduled for fall/winter 2007-2008 co-ops to know that they must pre-register for their co-ops before May 14, 2007.

First-time co-op students need to schedule pre-registration meetings to participate in the co-op process. Students returning from co-ops need to schedule meetings with their coordinators to review their ES&Ps (Employment Summary & Planner) before participating in their next co-ops.

Nursing students can call 215-762-7577 to schedule pre-registration meetings. All other students can call the SCDC at 215-895-2185.

Last Chance for Graduation Photos Today

The final opportunities to sit for 2008 senior class portraits will take place today, April 23, 2008 in room 3012, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Street).

All students having their portrait taken will receive a complimentary Lexerd yearbook.

Appointments can also be scheduled by calling 1-800-687-9327 during normal business hours.

When scheduling appointments, students will receive instructions on how to prepare for a portrait sitting and other pertinent information.

Students are urged to register today as this will be the final opportunity to have portraits taken for students who will participate in commencement ceremonies on June 14, 2008.

CAB's Spring Jam 2008 to Present Ben Folds

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) announces Ben Folds as the headliner for Spring Jam 2008.

Folds, known for his tracks like "Brick," "The Luckiest," "Army" and "Rockin' the Suburbs," was part of the Ben Folds Five before embarking on a solo career in 2001.

Other activities at Spring Jam will include a custom photo shoot, free food including Coldstone Creamery ice cream, Fuze drinks, 5th Year Comedy entertainers and the winners of the Battle of the Bands competition.

Admission to Spring Jam 2008 is free to all undergraduates with a valid I.D. Guest tickets are not yet available.

CAB will also sponsor Spring Jam Week events, including t-shirt tie-dying on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).

On Thursday, May 8, from noon to 2 p.m.,  just in time for Mother's Day, potted plants will be sold in front of MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Skin Cancer Educational Study by Appointment

Fox Chase Cancer Center and the University are partnering to conduct a volunteer tanning study on the Drexel campus. Time and place for the volunteer visits will be set up by appointment.

Volunteers should be adults ages 18-24 who do, or have, any of the following:

* Tan indoors or out
* Sometimes go without sunscreen
* Burn, peel, or blister
* Have skin cancer in family history

If volunteers meet these conditions, they may be eligible to participate in the educational/counseling survey and study. The investigators are Dr. Carolyn Heckman, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and Dr. Jackie Kloss, Department of Psychology.

Participants will have personalized photographic assessments. Compensation for time is $5-$15 for each of four sessions and the opportunity to win a $50 raffle at each time-point, plus a small, possible bonus.

CoAS to Present Dean's Seminar Today: "Neighborhoods of the Universe"

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Seminar Series will present "Neighborhoods of the Universe" today, April 23, 2008, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Michael Vogeley, associate professor in the Department of Physics, will discuss the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The SDSS reveals the complex structure of galaxy groups, clusters, superclusters and voids that fill the nearest billion light years of space. These different cosmic neighborhoods - the cities, suburbs, and rural outposts of the universe – strongly influence the properties of the galaxies that inhabit them. The cosmic census provided by the SDSS, which includes color images and detailed spectra of nearly a million galaxies, allows us to quantify how the shapes and star formation histories of galaxies vary among these environments.

This event is free and open to students, faculty and staff.  Refreshments will be served.

Two CEO Workshops Today

Rhonda Wittlin, academic counselor, Drexel Learning Center, and Marisol Rodriguez, director of the Alliance for Minority Participation, will present "Team Dynamics and Developing Leadership" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Students will be broken up into small groups for activities. This workshop is designed for student organizational leaders and members.

Dan Simmons, associate director of athletics, will present "Volunteerism and Sports: Importance of Paying Forward and Service through Sports" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Myers Hall Tutor Lounge (33rd and Race Streets).

This CEO session will discuss the roles volunteering and community service play in sports programs in terms of character development and teaching sports participants the importance of "paying forward." Specifically, the reasons will be examined why directors of quality athletic programs feel it is vital to integrate volunteer and community service opportunities.

The Department of Chemistry will present "Cyano-bridged, Single-molecule Magnets and Single-chain Magnets" today, April 23, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Xiao Zeng You, professor, Department of Chemistry, Nanjing University, will discuss the developments of new molecule-based magnets. In addition, nano-structured materials, properties and devices such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), single-chain magnets (SCMs) and nano-magnets will be discussed.

OCA and Inter-Fraternity to Present "Winter in Spring"

The Inter-Fraternity Council and the Office of Campus Activities will present their first annual “Winter in Spring” event on Friday, April 25, 2008 at 5 p.m. at The Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets).

Snow will fall at Drexel, regardless of the weather. The Quad will be transformed into a winter wonderland with real snow covering the ground. The event will include an evening of sledding, snowman building, snowball throwing and ice skating.

VOICE to Present Extravaganza of Indian Culture: "Yeh Hai Pyaar, Yaar"

Drexel VOICE will present "Yeh Hai Pyaar, Yaar" on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 6 p.m. in the Main Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

This program will showcase the University’s four premier collegiate dance teams, along with dance teams from other schools. VOICE will bring together all aspects of India and present them through singing, acting and a play.

Tickets are $10 at the door for general seating and $20 for VIP seating.
