CoAS to Present Dean's Seminar: "Neighborhoods of the Universe"

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Seminar Series will present "Neighborhoods of the Universe" on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in room 109, Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Michael Vogeley, associate professor in the Department of Physics will discuss the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The SDSS reveals the complex structure of galaxy groups, clusters, superclusters and voids that fill the nearest billion light years of space. These different cosmic neighborhoods - the cities, suburbs, and rural outposts of the universe – strongly influence the properties of the galaxies that inhabit them. The cosmic census provided by the SDSS, which includes color images and detailed spectra of nearly a million galaxies, allows us to quantify how the shapes and star formation histories of galaxies vary among these environments.

This event is free and open to students, faculty and staff.  Refreshments will be served.
