Applications for Student Government Elections Now Available


The Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) is seeking candidates for the spring 2006 elections. Applications are available online at http://www.drexel.edu/usga.

There are 24 positions available to full-time undergraduates. Visit the Web site for the full list of open positions and the requirements for candidacy.

The application must be turned in to the USGA office or the Office of Campus Activities by Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 5 p.m.

Candidates must attend an information session to be eligible for the elections. Information sessions will be held in the USGA office on the following dates:

Drexel Student Lilienthal Second Fastest American
Woman Finisher at 2006 Boston Marathon

Graduate student Michelle Lilienthal (above) completed the Boston Marathon in 2 hours, 40 minutes and 23 seconds. She was the 16th overall female finisher and second among American women. Her time qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Running in just her second career marathon, Lilienthal finished 3 minutes and 21 seconds behind the top female American finisher, Emily Levan. A former All-Big Ten middle-distance runner at the University of Wisconsin, Lilienthal placed third in the Philadelphia Marathon in November of 2005.
 
Lilienthal is working toward a graduate degree in higher education at Drexel. She also works in the Drexel Athletic Department as an assistant in the Sports Information Office. Lilienthal is originally from Iowa City, Iowa.

How to Eat Like a Millionaire


A cultural food bazaar will be held today, April 18, 2006 from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Enjoy lunch while you test your knowledge of cultural facts and trivia. Prizes include gift certificates to dine at Philadelphia's culturally-themed restaurants. This event is part of Drexel's week-long celebration of its multiple cultures.

Pool and Pizza at Ross Commons


Calling all pool sharks to come out to Ross Commons tonight, April 18, 2006 at 7 p.m. for our first 8-ball tournament of the quarter. There is no entry fee; winners take home Ultima Funds and other prizes.

Bring a friend and get them a free pizza with the all-day, two-for-one pizza special at the 2nd Floor.

The Power of the Written Word: Listening and Note Taking


The Drexel Center for Learning and Academic Excellence (DCLAE) will conduct a workshop "The Power of the Written Word: Listening and Note Taking" on Wednesday, April 19 from 5-6 p.m. in Main Building room 308 (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Cappie McKoy, associate director of DCLAE, will demonstrate strategies and techniques for listening and taking notes effectively in class. Knowing when to listen and what to write make a big difference in how well students do in class. Participants will learn communication cues and note-taking formats, and are encouraged to bring their textbook(s) and notes.

Drexel Freshman Receives "High Tech in Old Munich" Award


Scott Schmidt, a mechanical engineering and mechanics freshman, was awarded a partial scholarship to participate in this summer's High Tech in Old Munich program. The scholarship, sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), will cover his tuition, room and partial board.

While in Munich, Schmidt will take courses in the German language and culture and participate in seminars and workshops that focus on sustainability and environmental protection, hydrobiology and intercultural communications.

Schmidt is the second Drexel student to win this award.

The Goodwin College of Professional Studies hospitality studies division's Academic Bistro is open for spring term 2006 in a newly remodeled, stylish venue that boasts a marvelous view of the city. Award-Winning Author Bharati Mukherjee on The Drexel InterView


Author Bharati Mukherjee (above), winner of the 1988 National Book Critics Circle Award for The Middleman and Other Stories, will be the guest of Paula Marantz Cohen on DUTV's The Drexel InterView tonight, April 18, 2006 at 8 p.m. The show will be rebroadcast at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19; Saturday, April 22; Sunday, April 23; and Monday, April 24.

Filmmaker Philip Haas to Premiere New Film at Drexel


The Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will host the premiere of Philip Haas' new film, The Situation, on Monday, April 24, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Crossings Screening Room 028 (101 N. 32nd Street). A question and answer session with the director will follow.

The Situation, which stars Damian Lewis and Connie Nielsen, dramatizes the impact of the war in Iraq told through multiple stories of Iraqis placed in impossible situations caught between the U.S. efforts and the growing violent insurgency. Haas juggles the stories with those of an American CIA agent and a reporter.

Haas' previous work includes Up the Villa with Sean Penn, The Music of Chance with James Spader and Mandy Patinkin, and Angels & Insects with Kristin Scott Thomas.
