Students, Faculty and Staff Invited to Armory Celebration Today
The Drexel community is invited to help celebrate the signing of a long-term lease with the Pennsylvania National Guard that allows for the changeover of the Armory to “officially” become a part of Drexel and eventually a state–of- the-art convocation and basketball arena for the University. The celebration will take place today, April 15, 2008, from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the Armory (33rd Street and Lancaster Avenue).
Adjutant General Jessica L. Wright and President Papadakis will sign the lease agreement at the celebration.
Drexel cheerleaders, Mario the Magnificent, the Pep Band and the ROTC Honor Guard will be on hand to help launch the festivities.
Complimentary basketball arena-type food and beverages will be served.
Board of Trustees Chair Richard Greenawalt, Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III, Athletic Director Eric Zillmer, Dac Pack leader Rob Falcone, Bruiser Flint, men’s basketball coach, Denise Dillon, women’s basketball coach, City Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell and Mark Austin of the Pennsylvania National Guard will be on stage for the festivities.

Drexel to Host "Chill-out: Campus Solutions to Global Warming" Webcast
The second annual “Chill-out: Campus Solutions to Global Warming” webcast will stream on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. on the Drexel Web site, http://www.drexel.edu.
The University is one of 125 across the country that will host the webcast in support of the National Wildlife Federation. The webcast highlights the winning schools from the NWF Chill-out Competition, which recognizes schools that are doing an exemplary job of reducing global warming pollution on their campuses.
The mission of the National Wildlife Federation is to inspire Americans to protect wildlife for our children's future.

Sierra Student Coalition to Host Drexel Green Concert: "Rock 4 Roots"
The Sierra Student Coalition will host the concert “Rock 4 Roots” on Friday, April 25, 2008, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Armory (33rd Street north of Market Street).
The concert is open to the general public and will feature bands such as:
This concert is the culminating event for the Drexel Green Initiative’s Earth Week 2008 activities and its purpose is to gain continuing support for the Drexel Green Initiative.
Attendees will receive a complimentary admission ticket by bringing in two plastic containers (1’s and 2’s), as well as aluminum and glass containers, with a valid student I.D.
Those attendees who bring in enough recyclables to fill a 5-gallon bucket will receive a raffle ticket. The owner of the winning raffle ticket will receive a Martin acoustic guitar signed by the chairman and CEO of C.F. Martin & Co., Christian Frederick Martin IV.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Paul Schrader to Screen and Discuss The Comfort of Strangers Tonight
The Film & Video Program in The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will host writer/director Paul Schrader in a screening and discussion of his film The Comfort of Strangers today, April 15, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).
Over the past four decades, Schrader, a 2008 Rankin Scholar-in-Residence, has worked with film makers Martin Scorsese, Sydney Pollock and Brian DePalma. Schrader wrote the screenplays for the Martin Scorsese films Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, City Hall, The Last Temptation of Christ and Bringing Out the Dead.
Other Schrader screenplays include American Gigolo, The Yakuza and Hardcore.
Schrader’s enormous success as a screenwriter allowed him to undertake directing his own films which are notable for their stylistic and thematic risks.
The screening is free and open to the public. Schrader will discuss his film with the audience after the screening.

Calling All Engineering Filmmakers: CoE to Host Engineering Film Festival
The College of Engineering will host an info session about the inaugural Engineering Film Festival on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 5 p.m. in room 240, LeBow Engineering Center (31st and Market Streets).
Engineering students will have the opportunity to win prizes for short films, 3-8 minutes long, about their experience as an engineering student in this first annual Engineering Film Festival.
The session will provide information on film production guidelines, submission deadlines and film categories. All engineering students are welcome to attend.
Complimentary light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Student Life will host a symposium/mini-conference, "Higher Education and Student Affairs," on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
This symposium provides the opportunity to learn from colleagues about important trends, best practices and hot issues in higher education.

New Employee Orientation Sessions: "Engaging U"
Human Resources will present the new employee orientation program "Engaging U " every Monday (unless otherwise noted) from 9 to 11 a.m. The location will be provided to all registered participants.
All current staff members are welcome to attend this newly revised and improved program. Staff will learn what new employees are now learning about the University, and may find information that will enhance their own careers. Five seats will be available during each new employee session for current staff members.

Social Justice in Health Care: Addiction and Mental Illness
The Office of Student Life at the Center City Hahnemann Campus will host programming today on the topics of addiction and mental illness today, April 15 through tomorrow, April 16, 2008. A facilitated discussion on mental health will take place today from noon to 1 p.m. in room 2101, New College Building (245 N. 15th Street).
On Wednesday, April 16, a facilitated discussion on addictions will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in room 3217 in the New College Building. Topics to be discussed include the stigmas associated with addiction and psychiatric problems, relapses and treatments.
Complimentary lunch or breakfast will be provided to all who attend.
These programs are part of the year-long series "Social Justice in Health Care: Meeting the Needs of Each Individual Patient." The goal of this series is to educate health care students about how they can better treat their patients by understanding their differences and by becoming familiar with their backgrounds, cultures and special circumstances. One week during each month of the 2007-08 academic year will be dedicated to special topics.
This month's highlighted topic is addiction and mental illness in health care. Informational handouts and brochures will be available in the Klahr Lobby of the New College Building along with giveaways and screenings of educational videos from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Wednesday.
The Office of Student Life is making a "Social Justice in Health Care" quilt. During each week of the series, all students, faculty, and staff are invited to decorate squares of fabric illustrating their hopes for the future of health care or to honor someone who may have suffered an injustice concerning their health. At the end of the year, the squares will be sewn together to create a quilt that will be displayed in the Center City Student Life Office.

Adrienne Kekec, executive director, International Students and Scholars Services, will present "Intercultural Communication" from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
Communication among people of differing cultures can be confusing, difficult and problematic. Non-verbal cues are often the source of miscommunication. This workshop will give a basic overview of cross-cultural communication and will introduce strategies for effective communication with people of other cultures.
John Gronski, senior marketing consultant, Greencastle Associates Consulting, will present "Frontline Leadership," from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Myers Hall Tutor Lounge (33rd and Race Streets).
The presentation will describe the three pillars of leadership: character, competence and direction. Attendees will learn and share experiences with Gronski, brigadier general and former brigade commander in Iraq.

In today's ever-globalizing world, one's culture may not be traditionally associated with one's religion. The intimate but complex relationship of religion and culture plays an increasing role in government policy and public opinion. This discussion will bring together representatives of the Baha'i, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Jewish and other faiths to explore this issue and move towards a clearer understanding of its global influence.

Magnificient Minds to Present Poetry Reading with Justin Vitiello Today
Magnificent Minds will present author Justin Vitiello (above) today, April 15, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Drexel Bookstore (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
Vitiello, professor emeritus of Italian at Temple University, is a major player in Philadelphia’s poetry scene. He has traveled the globe, published over 20 works of poetry and essays in English, Spanish and Italian and continues to curate the long-running Moonstone Poetry Series at Robin's Bookstore in Philadelphia. He has provided a stage for new and established poets, mentored hundreds of poets and provided beautiful written works for others to read.

The iSchool to Present Talk Today: "Millennial Students and Technology Use"
The College of Information Science and Technology, the iSchool's Dr. Denise Agosto, associate professor, and Dr. Susan Gasson, associate professor, will speak on "Millennial Students and Technology Use: Implications for Undergraduate Education" today, April 15, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. in room 14, Rush Building (33rd Street, north of Market Street).
This presentation addresses the impact of ubiquitous computing on undergraduate educational delivery and student learning. It focuses on the analysis of interdisciplinary literature relating to how the newest generation of undergraduate students interacts with and learns about using digital technologies. It also reports on the results of a small-scale, preliminary study that investigated the expectations, technology use preferences and information-seeking strategies of today's "millennial" undergraduates and of the professors who teach them. The two groups' ways of learning and interacting with digital media are compared and contrasted. Recommendations for better supporting the learning behaviors and preferences of today’s students are offered.
The lecture is part of the the iSchool at Drexel's Colloquium Series.

Conversation Network Party for Spring 2008 term
All Drexel students, faculty and staff are invited to the Spring 2008 Conversation Network welcome party to be held on Thursday, April 17, 2008, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
The Conversation Network is a unique opportunity for language and cultural exchange. It provides a forum for Drexel faculty, staff and students to meet and interact with international students learning English at Drexel's English Language Center. This opportunity will help to boost the foreign language skills of attendees.

Senator Hillary Clinton's visit to Drexel on Friday, April 11, 2008 received widespread coverage and was noted in hundreds of news outlets. Clinton’s visit was featured in an Associated Press story published in The Philadelphia Inquirer, New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, Houston Chronicle, Seattle Times and on the Web sites of ABC News, Forbes and Newsweek. President Papadakis gave welcoming remarks in the Great Court of the Main Building to a crowd of several hundred Drexel students, faculty and staff in addition to Clinton supporters from around the region.
