Drexel Green to Host "Drexel and Its Waste: Disposal and Recycling Programs" Today
Drexel Green, the University's sustainability task force, will host a community presentation “Drexel and Its Waste: Disposal and Recycling Programs,” today, April 10, 2008 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Stein Auditorium, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).
Over the next six weeks, the task force, led by Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III (above), will host community presentations on topics chosen by students that relate to environmental and sustainability issues. These presentations will occur once a week during the noon hour. Each will begin with a 20-30 minute presentation by University administrators responsible for the subject area, followed by 10-15 minutes of questions from student members of the task force and end with questions from and discussion with all those in attendance.
The schedule of subsequent programs will be released tonight.
Pizza and soda will be provided.
It is important to RSVP to studentlife@drexel.edu to ensure there isn’t too much waste created by the refreshments.
Students, faculty, administrators and staff are welcome to join the task force and participate in the ongoing work of its committees.

IEEE to Host Engineering a Greener World Conference Today
The Drexel University chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will host its second annual Engineering a Greener World Conference today, April 10, 2008, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).
The conference serves to inform the student population about sustainable engineering efforts and all engineers' obligation to think "green" while doing their work. Three high-profile speakers will address topics concerning sustainable engineering policy, renewable energy and industries going green.

LeBow Graduate Programs to Present Entrepreneur Jay Coen Gilbert Today
LeBow Graduate Programs will host an Earth Week event today, April 10, 2008, from 1 to 2 p.m. in room 403, Leonard Pearlstein Business Learning Center (33rd and Market Streets).

Meet Jay Coen Gilbert (above), founder of AND1and co-founder of B Lab to learn why companies should consider becoming B Corporations™, a new type of corporation that is purpose-driven and creates benefit for all stakeholders, not just shareholders. Jay Coen Gilbert co-founded and sold AND1, a $250 million dollar basketball footwear and apparel company based outside Philadelphia.
Gilbert will talk about his efforts to get companies to meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards.
The mission of Gilbert’s new non-profit organization, B Lab, is to support B corporations and this emerging sector by 1) certifying and rating B corporations; 2) developing and disseminating a legal framework to institutionalize stakeholder interests within existing corporate law; and 3) creating and promoting a powerful unifying ingredient brand.

Train Today to Volunteer with Committee of Seventy on Primary Election Day
On Tuesday, April 22, 2008, all eyes will be on Philadelphia. You can help make history by volunteering just a few hours of your time for the non-partisan Committee of Seventy.
The Committee of Seventy sponsors America’s oldest non-partisan volunteer Election Day Oversight Program. Drexel University, through its Drexel Votes 2008 initiative, has partnered with the Committee of Seventy to ensure the polling places in the 24th ward (where Drexel is located) are staffed with trained volunteers. Time slots for participation are available on April 22 from 7-11:30 a.m.; 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m.; 3:30-8 p.m.
This opportunity has been endorsed by the students, faculty, and staff of the Drexel Votes 2008 Committee.
Come to the volunteer training today, April 10, 2008 at 5 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

The April 22 Pennsylvania Primary is closing in fast, and Pennsylvania is the focus of great national energy and attention. Through its Drexel Votes 2008 initiative, the University has done an extraordinarily good job of getting the community focused on the election and registered to vote—now it’s time to focus on the actual voting.
Voters who are not going to be able to get to their polling place on April 22, have until 5 p.m. on April 15 to submit a signed application for an absentee ballot. The application form is available at:

Public Health Information Fair and Display Today at Love Park
Students from the School of Public Health will host a public information health fair today, April 10, 2008, from noon to 6 p.m. at Love Park (16th Street and JFK Boulevard).
The students will display letters, photos and postings to their Web site from community members across the region illustrating “What is Public Health?”
They will also provide information booths, hand out “This is Public Health” stickers and engage spectators to raise awareness for public health issues.
The event is free and open to the public.

Rudman Institute to Host Breakfast with Local News Directors Today
The Rudman Institute in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will host a “Meet the News Directors Breakfast,” today, April 10, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Paul Gluck, executive director of the Rudman Institute, will moderate a panel discussion with news directors from NBC10, WHYY, FOX29, CBS3 and the New Jersey Network (PBS).
News directors determine the broadcast news we see every day; this special opportunity to meet the “movers and shakers” of our local news media community is made possible by the mid-Atlantic chapter of NATAS, National Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies and the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.
This event is open to the public. The cost is $35. The student price is $20.

Graphic Design Program to Present Award-winning Designer Carin Goldberg Tonight
The Graphic Design Program in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present a lecture with acclaimed graphic designer Carin Goldberg today, April 10, 2008 at 6 p.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Center (32nd and Market Streets).
Goldberg has won numerous prestigious awards and designed hundreds of book jackets for almost every major American publishing house as well as album covers for artists ranging from Dvorák to Madonna. Her recent projects include design of the book Last Letters Home: Voices of Americans from the Battlefields of Iraq, which was based on the HBO documentary.

CAB to Present Free Screening Tonight: Invisible Children
The Campus Activities Board (CAB) will host a free screening of Invisible Children, tonight, April 10, 2008 at 9 p.m. in room 111, Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets).
Invisible Children is a documentary, filmed in 2003 by three Americans, about child soldiers and night commuters in Northern Uganda.

The Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology will host an Entrepreneurial Skills Workshop, "Invention into Innovation,” today, April 10, 2008, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Baiada Center, located on the ground floor of the Academic Building (3225 Arch Street). Nicholas C. Barbi, Ph.D. and Alfred S. DeLucia, Partners of nSynergies, Inc. will lead this workshop.
Attend this highly interactive workshop to explore the process an entrepreneur might follow to convert an idea into a realistic business plan. MAD Dragon's Redwalls to Appear on Tonight Show with Jay Leno Tonight
MAD Dragon artists the Redwalls will appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC-TV tonight, April 10, 2008.
The Redwalls are making the late-night talk circuit, having appeared on Late Night with David Letterman on January 23. Previously under contract to Capitol Records, the Chicago-based band has been touring for MAD Dragon Records to promote their latest album, the eponymous “The Redwalls,” gaining national media coverage along the way for the CD and MAD Dragon Records.
The band previously toured the world with groups such as Oasis, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs, Rooney and OK Go and performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Tonight Show.

Attorney/Author to Discuss Her Book Ivy Briefs: True Tales of a Neurotic Law Student Tonight
The Steinbright Career Development Center, the College of Law and the Magnificent Minds program will present a talk by Martha Kimes, Esq. (above), author of Ivy Briefs: True Tales of a Neurotic Law Student today, April 10, 2008, at 4 p.m. in room 140, College of Law Building (3320 Market Street).
Kimes is a 1997 graduate of Columbia Law School and her book has been hailed as a “modern day One-L,” offering a witty, insightful and at times poignant look at the law school admission process, life at an elite law school and the transition from law school to practice.
The talk will be followed by a book signing. Copies of Kimes’ book will be available for purchase at the event.
Refreshments will be served. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to 75.

Author Talk Tonight: Belva Lockwood: The Woman Who Would Be President
The Women’s Studies Program and Department of History and Politics in the College of Arts and Sciences will present, along with the College of Law, Belva Lockwood: The Woman Who Would Be President, today, April 10, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the fourth floor of the College of Law Building (3320 Market Street).
Legal historian Jill Norgren (above right), professor emerita of government and legal studies at John Jay College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will trace the history of women's rights pioneer, Belva Lockwood (above left).
There will be a reception before the event from 5 to 5:30 p.m.
Born without wealth or high social-standing, Belva Lockwood eventually received her law degree with the help of the President of the United States, became the first woman admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and ran for the U.S. presidency on the Equal Rights Party ticket in 1884 and 1888. As a mother, lawyer, lobbyist, suffragette and peace activist, Lockwood refused to accept restrictions on women's roles and fought for justice, equality and social change.
Professor Norgren will sign copies of her book following the talk. The book will be available for purchase at the event.

Ari Hauben, associate director of campus activities, will present "Interpersonal Leadership Skills," today, April 10, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
This seminar will focus on strategies for identifying personal leadership styles, strengths and weaknesses. Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, participants will evaluate their skills and determine specific areas for growth. Attendees will learn how a diversity of styles can contribute to an organization's effectiveness.

Hindu Student Association Informational Meeting Tonight
The newly formed student organization, the Hindu Student Association, will hold its first meeting of the term today, April 10, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. in conference room A, in the lower level of Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Business Plan Development Workshop Series
The Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology is hosting its spring/summer workshop series every Saturday morning through May 3, 2008 in the Baiada Center (ground floor, 3225 Arch Street).
Sessions kick-off at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast and instruction begins promptly at 10 a.m.
The Baiada Center's Business Plan Development Workshops are designed for Drexel student teams who are developing business plans for submission to the 2008 Business Plan Competition. Individual and group support is provided by the Baiada team of mentors throughout this series.
Winning teams in the 2008 competition will be awarded $1,000 in cash and may be given the opportunity to compete in the Baiada Incubator Competition, where cash and in-kind prizes of more than $75,000 will be awarded.

Construction Management Networking Event and Reception
The Student Chapter of the Construction Management Association and the Drexel Construction Management Advisory Council will host a networking event and reception on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor atrium of the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Markeet Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).
The evening will begin with presentations designed to develop students’ networking abilities and will be followed by a workshop where attendees can practice those skills.
Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Registration is not required but there will be a $2 fee for walk-ins who have not pre-registered. The deadline for pre-registration is Monday, April 14.

Women’s Basketball Team to Host Charity 3-on-3 Tournament
Drexel women's basketball will host a three-on-three tournament on Friday, April 11, 2008, with tip-off at 4 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets).
Proceeds will be donated to the Calvin Hicks Fund. Calvin Hicks has been the heart of Drexel athletics since 1989. He was able to travel with the men’s basketball team until this past year when his health took a turn for the worse and daily activities became increasingly difficult for him to perform without pain. These funds will help ensure that Calvin receives proper treatment as he undergoes daily rehab and frequent doctor visits.
Team size is limited to four people and entry fees are $10 per person.
This is the second year for the tournament. Last year the Dragons raised $3,000 for St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.

Computer Science to Present: "Learning the Data Representation for Modeling, Classification and Clustering"
The Department of Computer Science will present the lecture "Learning the Representation for Modeling, Classification and Clustering Problems with Energy-based Component Analysis Methods," on Friday, April 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. in room 153, University Crossings (32nd and Market Streets).
Dr. Fernando De la Torre of Carnegie Mellon University will be the speaker.
Selecting a good data representation is a key aspect of any modeling, classification or clustering algorithm. Component Analysis (CA) methods have been used as a feature extraction step in numerous visual, graphics and signal processing tasks. This talk will describe a unified framework for energy-based learning in CA methods. It will propose several extensions to CA methods to learn linear and non-linear data representations to improve performance for classification, clustering and modeling/visual tracking problems.
This lecture is part of the Computer Science Colloquium Series.

Pipino Scholarship Application Deadline is April 16
Applications for the 2008 Nicholas Pipino Scholarship Foundation awards are due on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. The scholarships will be presented at the 16th Annual University City 5K Run on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at 11 a.m.
All Drexel students in their sophomore year or higher who will not graduate this year are eligible. The awards are presented in honor of Nick Pipino, a Drexel undergraduate who was killed in 1992.
Proceeds from the race, sponsored by Drexel and the Pipino Foundation, benefit the scholarships.

President Papadakis and his wife, Eliana, are featured in a photograph taken at the Black Tie White Coat Ball and published in The Philadelphia Inquirer’s “Social Circuit” section on April 9, 2008. The ball raised $700,000 for the Drexel Autism Center and the Drexel University College of Medicine Autism Consortium.

A used-sneakers collection organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee was featured on KYW-AM (1060) newscasts April 8 and 9, 2008. The sneakers will be recycled into grind for playground surfaces. Carl "Tobey" Oxholm III, executive vice president and chief of staff; Geoffrey Arnold, assistant men’s basketball coach; and Sarah Gostomski, an undergraduate majoring in nursing, commented on the collection.
