Drexel Green Announces First of Six Community Presentations
Drexel Green, the University’s sustainability task force, announces a community presentation “Drexel and Its Waste: Disposal and Recycling Programs,” on Thursday, April 10, 2008 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Mitchell Auditorium of the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).
Over the next six weeks, the task force, led by Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III (above), will host community presentations on topics chosen by students that relate to environmental and sustainability issues. These presentations will occur once a week during the noon hour. Each will begin with a 20-30 minute presentation by University administrators responsible for the subject area, followed by 10-15 minutes of questions from student members of the task force and end with questions from and discussion with all those in attendance.
Pizza and soda will be provided. It is important to rsvp to studentlife@drexel.edu to ensure we don’t create too much waste with our refreshments.
Students, faculty, administrators and staff are welcome to join the task force and participate in the ongoing work of its committees.
The schedule of subsequent programs will be released on April 10.

Donate Old Sneakers for the Earth Day Sneaker Toss on the Quad
On Tuesday, April 8, 2008 from 12:30 to 1 p.m., Drexel athletes will challenge fellow students in a sneaker toss on the Quad (between Chestnut and Market Streets and 32nd and 33rd Streets). Bring your old sneakers and be part of the fun.
The student-athlete driven event is part of the Earth Day Educational Fair, created to educate students, faculty and staff on environmental issues and solutions. The sneakers will be recycled into plaground materials.
Members of the teams, including men’s and women’s basketball, will take on students in friendly competition as part of the recycling effort. Bragging rights will go to the player or student who can toss his or her sneakers into a bin from the farthest distance out. Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III, executive vice president and chief of staff, will also give it a go in the competition.
The University would like to give special thanks to the Philadelphia Squash Racquets Association. The PSRA is the region’s squash organization, linking three dozen athletic clubs from Lancaster PA to Atlantic City NJ, from Lansdale to Wilmington, DE, and is a strong supporter of SquashSmarts, a program for urban youth headquartered here at Drexel that links academic tutoring to academic prowess in squash. The PSRA has joined Drexel student-athletes in reaching out to their membership to assist in this project, collecting used sneakers at all member clubs throughout the region.

CoAS Dean’s Seminar Series: "Nonlinear Waves: Where Do They Come From? What Do They Do?"
The College of Arts and Sciences will present, “Nonlinear Waves: Where Do They Come From? What Do They Do?” on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 from 3:30 to 5:50 p.m. in room 109 Disque Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Dr. J. Douglas Wright, assistant professor of mathematics, will discuss the role of non-linearity in the generation and behavior of waves and examples of how these waves are useful (fiber optic communications), catastrophic (tsunamis) or just plain strange.
Not all systems react to input in a linear way. It is not always the case that if you put twice (or three times) as much into a system, you get twice (or three times) as much out. It might be that you get four times (nine times!) as much out. The relationship between in and out might be yet more complicated. This sort of "non-linearity" is extremely important when investigating the propagation of signals and waves in many different physical settings, either on the surface of the ocean or in an axon in your nervous system.
This event is free and open to students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be served.
