The Drexel Collection Presents "Francis Martin Drexel: His Life and Work"

Curator of The Drexel Collection Jacqueline De Groff will present the lecture “Francis Martin Drexel: His Life and Work,” and unveil three portraits by the artist that were recently purchased by the University on Monday, April 11, 2005 at 5 p.m. in the Westphal Picture Gallery (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Francis Martin Drexel was the father of the University’s founder, Anthony J. Drexel. Suffering many financial hardships, he sacrificed his dream of becoming an artist to become a banker and support his family. He used the currency expertise he developed in his foreign travels to create one of America’s great banking houses. Under his leadership and that of his son, Anthony J. Drexel, Drexel & Company became a cornerstone of American finance.

The artist-turned-banker instilled in his children a love for art that crystallized into The Drexel Collection. Originally opening its doors in 1902, the Westphal Picture Gallery was restored to its original condition in 2002 and works from The Drexel Collection decorate its walls from wainscot to cornice.

The Francis Martin Drexel portraits that will be unveiled consist of a Self-Portrait in his early 20s; one of his daughter, Mary Johanna; and a Self-Portrait with Family.
