Cameron Sinclair Lecture Tonight: “How Community Design Delivers More than Architecture”

Internationally renowned architect Cameron Sinclair will present “How Community Design Delivers More Than Architecture” tonight, April 3, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Sinclair is visiting the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design as the 2008 Rankin Scholar-in-Residence from Thursday, April 3 through Monday, April 7, 2008, presenting this lecture and a design workshop series open to students from across the University.

Sinclair, named by Fortune magazine as one of seven people making the world a better place, is the co-founder and executive director of Architecture for Humanity, a charitable organization that seeks architectural solutions to humanitarian crisis and brings design services to communities in need. He is currently working in a dozen countries, helping to find solutions for critical problems.

In addition, he is the recipient of the Lewis Mumford Award for Peace and the Design for Humanity Award of the Society of Interior Designers.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Town Hall Meeting Tonight: Under-age Drinking on College Campuses

The Office of Alcohol, Other Drug, and Health Education, the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration and the Network Addressing Collegiate Alcohol and Other Drug Issues will present a town hall discussion, “Under-age Drinking on College Campuses,” today, April 3, 2008 from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

The format will be a panel discussion with questions and answers featuring Dr. David Ruth, dean of students, Pam Negro, associate director of the center for addiction studies, Rowan University, and Mark Badstubner, chief judicial officer, La Salle University.

Dr. Mariana Chilton in Panel Discussion Today with Surgeon General: “Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future”

The College of Physicians of Philadelphia will present a panel, “Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future,” with keynoter Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson, M.D., the U.S. Surgeon General, today, April 3, 2008 from 10 a.m. to noon at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (19 South 22nd Street).

Drexel School of Public Health associate professor, Dr. Mariana Chilton (above), Department of Community Health and Prevention, has been invited to participate as a panelist. Additional panelists who will discuss how their respective organizations are trying to solve the issue of childhood obesity include:

Baiada Center to Kick-off Business Plan Development Workshop Series This Saturday

The Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology will kick-off its spring/summer workshop series on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast in the Baiada Center (3225 Arch Street, ground floor). Instruction will begin promptly at 10 a.m.

The Baiada Center's Business Plan Development Workshops are designed for Drexel student teams who are developing business plans for submission to the 2008 Business Plan Competition. Individual and group support is provided by the Baiada team of mentors throughout the delivery of this series.

Winning teams in the 2008 competition will be awarded $1,000 in cash and may be given the opportunity to compete in the Baiada Incubator Competition.

The College of Arts and Sciences, the Certificate Program in Writing and Publishing in the Department of English and Philosophy and Magnificent Minds will present “A Frank Conversation with Frank Wilson” on Friday, April 11, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Paul Peck Alumni Center (32nd and Market Streets).

Frank Wilson (above) is the recently retired, long-time book review editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer and writer of the popular literary blog, Books, Inq.  He will discuss, among other topics:

Philadelphia Writers Conference This Sunday: Those Critical First Pages

A Philadelphia Writer's Conference with book editor Kathryn Craft (above) will be a featured event on Sunday, April 6, 2008, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery, located on 3rd floor, Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Books are sold by their beginnings. Book editor Kathryn Craft will show examples and run exercises on writing great openings. Craft is the founder of Writing-Partner.com, a manuscript evaluation and editing service. She has been a two-term president of the Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group. She has contributed hundreds of articles to newspapers in the Greater Philadelphia area and has recently completed her second novel.

This lecture is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is needed.

College of Law "Slice of Justice" Auction Today

The College of Law will sponsor the "Slice of Justice" auction today, April 3, 2008 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Some of the items to be auctioned:

Proceeds of  the auction will go to fund summer stipends for law students who are taking unpaid summer internships in the public interest sector.

Deadline for Submissions to CoAS’ Research Day This Friday

The College of Arts and Sciences’ Research Day will take place on Monday, April 14, 2008, from 12:30 to 5 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall, Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday, April 4 at 5 p.m.

All students are encouraged to submit their work for presentation. Abstracts should be submitted online at: https://surveys.drexel.edu/TakeSurvey.asp?SurveyID=9418772J9l45G .

Behrakis Grand Hall will be available for students to set up their posters from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 14 and the event will get underway at 12:30 p.m. 

Posters will be judged by faculty and student teams and prizes will be awarded in four divisions:

Take Advantage of One of the Largest Academic Career Fairs in the Region

All students and alumni are invited to participate in the Steinbright Career Development Center's Annual Spring Career Fair on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets).

More than 210 employers will meet with interested students and job candidates to talk with them about their companies and job opportunities.

The Steinbright Career Development Center encourages all students to participate in this excellent opportunity to conduct a proactive job search, research the competitive job market, target specific employers and develop future networking contacts.

PRSSA to Host Bacon Brothers (Kevin and Michael) Benefit Concerts

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), in association with Bancroft NeuroHealth, is promoting benefit concerts featuring the Bacon Brothers on Friday, April 4, 2008, at 7 and 9:30 p.m. in the Zellerbach Theatre at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (3680 Walnut Street).

Actor Kevin Bacon (above), his brother Michael and their band will play two benefit concerts in Philadelphia. $15 student tickets are only available for the 9:30 p.m. show and can be reserved by calling the box office at 215-898-3900.

Proceeds from the concerts will benefit Bancroft NeuroHealth. Based in Haddonfield, NJ, Bancroft NeuroHealth annually serves more than 1,300 children and adults with autism, developmental disabilities, acquired brain injuries and other neurological impairments.

Drexel Engineering Cities Initiative to Host Colloquium

The Drexel Engineering Cities Initiative will host "Cities Initiative Colloquium: Are Tolls the Solution to Traffic Congestion in America's Urban Areas?" on Monday, April 7, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. John McDonald, professor of economics at the University of Illinois at Chicago and author of Economics of Urban Highway Congestion and Pricing, will present his research on congestion pricing.

Cities such as Milan and London impose tolls on cars that enter the city center as a way of reducing pollution and traffic congestion. In North America, New York City and Toronto are considering the implementation of this strategy. What is the best way of managing the increasingly dense vehicular traffic in our cities? How do we balance the needs of business and commerce with concerns about air quality and climate change?

Sigma Psi Zeta, Nu Charter, Wins Psi Sistership Award

The University's Nu Charter of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority won the Psi Sistership Award (the equivalent of Chapter of the Year) for 2006-07 at the National Sigma Psi Zeta Spring Convention, hosted by Drexel.

The Nu Charter was also recognized for achievements in the areas of philanthropy, sisterhood and activism. This award is noteworthy as the charter has only been at Drexel for less than six years.
