Dr. Cardwell researched and photographed art and architecture of the former Soviet republics with the support of a 2007 Fulbright grant.

The Caucasus country of the Republic of Georgia is bordered by Turkey in the west, Russia in the north and Azerbaijan and Armenia in the south. It is a country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and as such its art history shares the history of both the Middle East and Europe.

As one of the first Christian countries, and because of its independence of character, Georgian architecture, medieval painting, cloisonné enamel art and manuscripts developed into unique and sometimes surprising forms as they exist today in museums and working monasteries.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
