Vote in the PA Primary: Voter Registration Ends This Week

Drexel Votes 2008 reminds all students, faculty and staff that voter registration forms must be received by Monday, March 24 in order to vote in the Pennsylvania primary on April 22. You must register as a Democrat or a Republican to vote in a primary in PA. Forms must be received at the County Board of Elections by the March 24 deadline either by mail or in person.

Registration forms are available at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets), the Handschumacher Dining Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets) room 228 of the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets) and the dormitories.

Earth Day Project: Donate Your Old Sneakers for New Playgrounds

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Community Alumni Network at Drexel University (CAN DU) invite students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to donate unwanted athletic shoes (in any size, shape or form) to be recycled into playground surfaces. Drop-off for the sneakers is in the main lobby of the Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and Market Streets).

Sneaker donors will receive a complimentary bottle of FRED (a new bottled water product) as a thank-you for their thoughtfulness and eco-friendliness.

The Philadelphia Squash Racquets Association is reaching out to their membership to assist in this project, collecting used sneakers at all member clubs throughout the Delaware Valley. Drexel sponsors have offered to share the donated water with Squash Smarts, a program for underserved urban youth, in return. MAD Dragon's Redwalls to Appear on Tonight Show with Jay Leno

MAD Dragon artists the Redwalls will appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC-TV on Thursday, April 10, 2008.

The Redwalls are making the late-night talk circuit, having appeared on Late Night with David Letterman on January 23. Previously under contract to Capitol Records, the Chicago-based band has been touring for MAD Dragon to promote their latest album, the eponymous “The Redwalls,” gaining national media coverage along the way for the CD and MAD Dragon Records.

The band previously toured the world with groups such as Oasis, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs, Rooney and OK Go and performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Tonight Show.

MAD Dragon Records is housed in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.

Drexel Basketball All-Conference Honorees

Several Drexel basketball players earned all-conference honors at the Colonial Athletic Association’s Basketball Awards Banquet prior to the conference tournaments.

Senior Frank Elegar, who led the Dragons in scoring, rebounding and blocks this season, earned All-CAA Second Team honors and was also named to the All-Defensive Team.

Sophomore Gabriela Marginean, who was second in the conference in scoring and led the nation in free-throw percentage this season, was named to the All-CAA First Team.

Senior Narissa Suber, Drexel's all-time leading three-point shooter, made the All-CAA Third Team and freshman Jasmina Rosseel earned All-Rookie CAA Team honors.

The Asbury Protestant Ministry will host a traditional tenebrae service (service of the shadows) on Friday, March 21, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 24, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Students for a Democratic Society to Host Dance Party

Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) will host a "Drop Debt, Not Bombs" dance party on Friday, March 21, 2008 at 1 p.m. in front of MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

In observance of the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq, the SDS is presenting this dance to protest the trillion dollars spent in Iraq and demand accessible, affordable higher education.

Men's and Women's Crew to Host Villanova and Philadelphia University

The men's and women's rowing teams will compete against city rivals Villanova University and Philadelphia University in a tri-meet on Friday, March 21, 2008 beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the Schuylkill River.

The action will get underway with the women’s novice eight race at 9:30 a.m. It will be followed by the men’s novice eight in a race that will feature two Drexel entries and one boat each from Philadelphia University and Villanova.

At 10:30 a.m. the men’s varsity four race will begin, and the 11 a.m. race will feature the junior varsity women’s eight.

The tri-meet will conclude with a race at 11:15 a.m. featuring the women’s varsity eight boats from all three schools.

Admission is free and all are invited to attend in support of Drexel Rowing.

Grandstands are located between the Columbia and Strawberry Mansion Bridges on Kelly Drive, just north of the St. Joseph's University Boathouse. There is free public parking near the boathouse.

School of Public Health to Host Seminar on Gender Violence in Africa

The School of Public Health will present a seminar, "Gender Violence in the Post-election Period in Kenya," with Dr. Samuel Thenya, CEO and founder of the Nairobi Women's and Children's Hospital, on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 3 p.m. on the sixth floor of the Bellet Building (1505 Race Street).

Dr. Thenya is a pioneer in HIV and gender violence treatment in Kenya. The groundbreaking Nairobi Women’s and Children’s Hospital is the first hospital catering exclusively to women’s medical needs in east and central Africa. The hospital provides comprehensive OB/GYN services and operates the charitable Gender Violence Recovery Centre, which provides specialized medical treatment and psychosocial support to survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence, both at the center and through mobile units.

The seminar is part of the Eisenhower Fellowship Program.

Members of the Philadelphia Orchestra to Perform in Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery

The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design and Pennoni Honors College will present the final concert of the Campus Concert Series, on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 8 p.m. in the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery on the third floor of the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

The Society Hill String Ensemble, with members from the Philadelphia Orchestra's famed strings section, will perform works by Haydn, Beethoven, Kodaly and Dvorak.

This concert is free and open to the public.

There will be a reception at 7 p.m.

Seniors Invited to Nominate Teachers for "Behind Every Graduate" Award

In 2006, the Office of the Provost initiated the "Behind Every Graduate Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching." Nominations for this year’s awards, to be presented at the 2008 Commencement ceremonies, are now being accepted.

Drexel values the high school teachers who have inspired our graduates. All seniors who will graduate in June 2008 are invited to nominate a high school teacher who inspired them to pursue their college studies. The nominees must still be teaching.

To submit a nomination, visit http://www.drexel.edu/provost/BehindEveryGraduate/. Students will be asked to write a brief essay including the teacher's name, high school subject taught and a statement of why the teacher should be selected. The essay and nomination form should be submitted no later than Friday, April 25, 2008.

A committee will review all entries and select finalists, who will be contacted and notified about the program. Finalists will then be asked to send a resume and other relevant information. Their school principals will be also contacted for a reference. Honorees will receive an expense-paid trip to Philadelphia for two. They will attend pre-Commencement activities and be recognized at the commencement ceremony of their nominating students. Each honoree will receive a $2,000 prize and a $2,000 donation will be made to the winning teachers' schools.

The Chronicle of Higher Education features Katherine Adam, outreach coordinator for the Philadelphia GROW Project, and her undergraduate thesis, "The New Feminized Majority: How Democrats Can Change America with Women's Values," in a story published March 18, 2008. The thesis has been converted into a book that will hit shelves nationwide April 30.
