DUCoM Student Receives AMA Leadership Award
Drexel University College of Medicine student Alyce Belonis has received the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation’s 2007 Leadership Award. The award provides medical students, residents, fellows, young physicians, and international medical graduate physicians special training to develop their skills as future leaders in organized medicine.
Belonis, one of only 15 students in the country to receive the award, was recognized by the foundation for demonstrating outstanding non-clinical leadership skills in advocacy, community service and/or education. She has served as the legislative chair and president for the Drexel University College of Medicine’s chapter of the American Medical Association and the Pennsylvania Medical Society. She has also been a member of the Drexel chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and is a volunteer and coordinator at Drexel’s student-run Eliza Shirley Clinic in Philadelphia, which provides healthcare to homeless and uninsured patients.
Beginning in June, Belonis will serve as the AMA Medical Student Section's liaison to the National Board of Medical Examiners’ Advisory Committee for Medical School Programs. Last summer, she participated in the AMA’s Government Relations Internship Program through an internship at the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has particular interest in health care access for underserved populations.

Nursing Student Receives Civil Air Patrol Spaatz Award
David Maver, a freshman in the College of Nursing and Health Professionals (CoNHP) and member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), has been promoted to the rank of Cadet Colonel of CAP.
Maver passed the final exam for the General Carl. A. Spaatz Award, the highest cadet award in the CAP in late February. Cadets who receive the award are promoted to cadet colonel, the highest rank in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program.
This latest achievement is one of many for Maver, who was named 2006 CAP National Cadet of the Year and featured in the December 2006 edition of CAP Volunteer magazine.
Cadets qualify for the Spaatz award after devoting an average of five years in the CAP Cadet Program, which teaches self-discipline, personal responsibility, leadership skills, and the foundation necessary for pursuing a career in aviation, space or technology. On average, only two cadets in one thousand earn the Spaatz Award.
The Civil Air Patrol, the official Air Force auxiliary, is a nonprofit organization with almost 62,000 members nationwide. It performs 95 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center.
For more information on the award, visit http://level2.cap.gov/index.cfm?nodeID=5159.
