Pulsed Doppler Inventor "Listens to the Blood Flow"


Dr. Andrzej Nowicki from the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research at the Polish Academy of Sciences will speak on "Doppler Music: Listen to the Blood Flow" at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 15, 2005 in the Wedge Room of the Baiada Center (3225 Arch Street).

Dr. Nowicki will discuss Doppler ultrasound, an acoustic aid for medical diagnosis - especially cardiovascular, which gives a powerful and rich enhancement to the more familiar stethoscope. He is the co-inventor of the multigate pulsed Doppler.

University to Host 2005 Joint Meeting of Combustion Institute


Drexel will hold the 2005 Joint Meeting of the U.S. Sections of the Combustion Institute from March 20-23, 2005 on the University City Main Campus. The event is being hosted by the College of Engineering and the department of mechanical engineering and mechanics.

The symposium will include technical sessions on energy self-sufficiency, emission fuels and new technologies for energy conservation. Approximately 600 distinguished engineers, scientists, faculty members and students from across the U.S. are expected to attend the conference.

Social events will be held throughout the symposium, including a welcome reception on Sunday, March 20 from 5-7 p.m. in the Main Building Great Court (32nd and Chestnut Streets), a banquet on Monday, March 21 from 6:30-10 p.m. at The Down Town Club of Philadelphia (11th floor of the Public Ledger Building, 6th and Chestnut Streets), and a poster session reception from 3:10-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22 in the Great Court.

Following the reception, attendees can tour the University's Combustion Laboratories from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Dr. John Kounios, Drexel professor of psychology, cognitive neuroscientist and discoverer of the physiology of sudden insight, will be the guest of Paula Marantz Cohen on DUTV's The Drexel InterView on Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at 8 p.m. The show will be rebroadcast on Wednesday, March 16, at 10 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday, March 19-20, at 8 a.m.

Sarah Stolfa, a senior photography major in the College of Media Arts & Design and grand prize winner in The New York Times Magazine's 2004 "Capture the Times" college photography contest, will appear on The Drexel InterView on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 8 p.m. The show will be rebroadcast on Wednesday, March 23, at 10 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27, at 8 a.m.

DUTV can be seen on Comcast channel 48 in Center City and South Philadelphia, channel 99 in North Philadelphia, Chestnut Hill and Germantown, channel 54 in other Philadelphia neighborhoods and channel 62 on Urban Cableworks.

Delta Zeta Sponsors "Project Prom Dress"


Drexel's Epsilon Zeta chapter of the Delta Zeta sorority is collecting "slightly worn but loved" formal, cocktail and bridesmaid dresses that can be cleaned, altered and worn by local high school students to their senior proms. Dresses and accessories to complement the dresses will be accepted at the sorority's house at 202 N. 34th Street through April 15.

Donors can also arrange to have dresses and accessories picked up by a sister by contacting Morgan Kato, the chapter's philanthropy chairman, at mak57@drexel.edu.

Honored by Pennsylvania Bar Association


Drexel University College of Medicine trustee Justice Sandra Schultz Newman '59, Hon. '01, will receive the Pennsylvania Bar Association's 2005 Anne X. Alpern Award at a ceremony to be held on Thursday, May 5, 2005 in Pittsburgh.

The award is given to a female member of the bar who has had a significant impact in Pennsylvania and has demonstrated leadership in a law-related profession and in the community and by participating in mentoring activities.

Psychiatry Grand Rounds to Discuss Antipsychotic Drugs in Autism

The Drexel University College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry will hold the grand rounds session "Antipsychotic Drugs in Autism" on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 12:30 p.m. in the Scattergood Auditorium at Friends Hospital (4641 Roosevelt Boulevard).

Dr. Richard Malone from the Drexel University College of Medicine will be the guest speaker.

Towfique Raj Wins 2005 Gates Cambridge Scholarship

College of Engineering student Towfique Raj was awarded a 2005 Gates Cambridge Scholarship from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Raj is one of 38 U.S. students who will join Gates Scholars from around the world to begin their graduate studies at the University of Cambridge, England in October 2005. Raj will pursue a Ph.D. in genetics. He is the first Drexel student to receive the Cambridge scholarship.

Since the start of the scholarship program in 2001, more than 200 scholars have completed their studies at Cambridge. For more information about the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program, visit http://www.gates.scholarships.cam.ac.uk .
