Drexel Receives Award from U.S. President for Community Service
Dr. Mark Greenberg, dean of the Pennoni Honors College, announced that Drexel has received presidential recognition for extraordinary contributions to service in the community in the second annual 2007 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
This is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The President’s Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.
Drexel will receive recognition at a national awards ceremony and a listing on the President’s Honor Roll Web site as a result of this honor.
In making the announcement about the 2007 President’s Honor Roll, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings said, “Americans rely on our higher education system to prepare students for citizenship and the workforce. We look to institutions like these to provide leadership in partnering with local schools to shape the civic, democratic and economic future of our country.”

The Book of Exodus and the Origins of the Passover Seder
The Judaic Studies Program, in cooperation with the Jewish Publication Society, will present "The Book of Exodus and the Origins of the Passover Seder," a lecture by Dr. Jeffrey H. Tigay, on Friday, March 7, 2008, at 11 a.m. in room L33, W.W. Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets).
Although the Passover Seder is inspired by the account of the exodus in the Bible, the Seder as it is known and practiced today originated more than 1,000 years later during the Greco-Roman and Talmudic periods of Jewish history. Some portions of the Passover Seder are even later than that. What parts of this work does the Seder owe to the Bible and what is the source of the customs that are practiced today?
Dr. Tigay is the A.M. Ellis Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages and Literatures in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania.
This lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

MEM Winter Seminar Series to Present: How Polar Nano-Regions Affect Relaxor Properties
The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics will present a lecture, “Competing Orders in Lead Perovskite Relaxors – How Polar Nano-Regions Affect Relaxor Properties,” by Dr. Guangyong Xu- on Friday, March 7, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 162, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Dr. Xu, physicist for Brookhaven National Laboratory, will present his recent work on local polar clusters called polar nano-regions (PNR), which are believed to play important roles in the electronic properties of relaxor ferroelectrics. Diffuse scattering studies on PNRs in PMN-xPT and PZN-xPT systems will be presented and their electric field response will be discussed.
