Neal Handly's "Assessing Patient Safety Indicators in Emergency Healthcare"

Dr. Neal Handly, assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine, will speak on his study "Assessing Patient Safety Indicators in Emergency Healthcare" on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. in room 014, Rush Building (33rd Street, north of Market Street).

A common language is necessary to talk about safety in healthcare. How one can define safety or errors depends on how one looks at the healthcare encounter. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has started defining an aspect of the safety language by generating a set of patient safety indicators (PSIs), based on standardized hospital discharge data rather than hospital process data. Data needed for the assessment and comparison of PSIs are not located in a single dataset and therefore require enrichment with additional calculated data values.

Limitations of Dr. Handly's study (and hence opportunities for further research) will be discussed.

The lecture is part of the The iSchool at Drexel's Colloquium Series, sponsored by the College of Information Science and Technology.

For more information, visit the College's Web site at http://www.ischool.drexel.edu or email Dr. Robert Allen at bob.allen@ischool.drexel.edu.

The Book of Exodus and the Origins of the Passover Seder

The Judaic Studies Program, in cooperation with the Jewish Publication Society, will present "The Book of Exodus and the Origins of the Passover Seder," a lecture by Dr. Jeffrey H. Tigay, on Friday, March 7, 2008, at 11 a.m. in room L33, W.W. Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets).

Although the Passover Seder is inspired by the account of the exodus in the Bible, the Seder as it is known and practiced today originated more than 1,000 years later during the Greco-Roman and Talmudic periods of Jewish history. Some portions of the Passover Seder are even later than that. What parts of this work does the Seder owe to the Bible and what is the source of the customs that are practiced today?

Dr. Tigay is the A.M. Ellis Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages and Literatures in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania.

This lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Two CEO Workshops Today

The Creating Excellent Organizations (CEO) Program will offer three workshops today.

Stephen Rupprecht, interim assistant dean of student conduct and community standards, will present his lecture titled "Credibility - It's Hard to Get and Easy to Lose" today, March 5, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in room 226, Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Credibility is the cornerstone of leadership -- and leadership is, above all else, about relationships. Most people have very high expectations of their leaders, and credibility involves how leaders earn the trust and confidence of their constituents. Credibility is hard to get -- and easy to lose. Crediblity is about what people demand of their leaders and the actions leaders must take in order to intensify their constituents' commitment to a common cause.

Sasha A. Williams, personal insurance agent for Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, will present her lecture "Have a Word? Conquering the Fears of Public Speaking!" today, March 5, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

The truth about public speaking: one doesn't have to be perfect to be successful at speaking to an audience. Attendees will learn keys and tips to gaining the confidence necessary to be able to present to an audience.

These free workshops are designed for student organization leaders and members. For more information, visit http://www.drexel.edu/oca/l/.
