"Cyborgs, Artificial Intelligences, and Meat Machines: Computers and the Reinvention of the Body."
The Winter 2008 Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) on "The Mechanical Body" will present a talk by Dr. Nathan Ensmenger titled "Cyborgs, Artificial Intelligences, and Meat Machines: Computers and the Reinvention of the Body" today, March 4, 2008, from 3:30 to 4:50 p.m. in room 340, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
In the years after World War II, the electronic computer emerged not only as an important and revolutionary technology, but also as a power metaphor for the workings of complex social and biological systems. The re-conceptualization of the body as an "information machine" has transformed modern biology, psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, and medicine. This lecture will explore the movement of techniques and ideas from computer science and communications engineering into scientific and popular culture.
Dr. Ensmenger is an assistant professor in the History and Sociology of Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania. His undergraduate degree (in civil engineering and operations research) is from Princeton and his Ph.D. in the history of science is from the University of Pennsylvania.
This event is free and open to the public.
