Computer Science to Present Talk: Learning Planning Knowledge

The Computer Science Colloquium Series will present a talk by Dr. Fusun Yaman of the University of Maryland, "Using WIT and CHARM to Learn Planning Knowledge," today, February 28, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Hill Conference Room, room 240, Lebow Engineering Center (31st and Market Streets).

Domain-configurable planners, ones that use domain-specific planning knowledge, out-perform fully automated planners. The key challenge in building such planners is to acquire planning knowledge from a domain expert. This talk will present work on learning planning knowledge that can be used in domain-configurable planners.

MEM Winter Seminar Series Presents: Sustainable Materials Systems

The Department of Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics will present a lecture, “Sustainable Materials Systems,” by Dr. Jeremy Gregory on Friday, February 29, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 162 (MEM Seminar Room) Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Gregory, research scientist in the Materials Systems Laboratory of MIT, will present research conducted at the Materials Systems Laboratory that explores topics important to creating and making decisions within sustainable materials systems, with particular emphasis on materials availability and recovery at end-of-life.

Specific topics presented will include risks to supply chains from resource scarcity, supply and demand for specialized materials from end-of-life electronics (a case study of cathode ray tube glass), metrics for evaluating recycling decisions (economic value as a proxy of environmental impact), and modeling and evaluating the performance of recycling systems (case studies of electronics recycling systems in several regions across the world).

The talk will also include discussion on the definition of sustainability and sustainable materials systems and the roles that engineers can play in creating sustainable materials systems.

"Echolalias: On Yiddish and the Forgetting of Language"

The Judaic Studies Program will present "Echolalias: On Yiddish and the Forgetting of Language," a lecture and book-signing by Dr. Daniel Heller-Roazen (above), today, February 28, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. in room L33, W.W. Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets).

In Echolalias, Dr. Heller-Roazen reflects on the many forms of linguistic forgetfulness. Just as speech can be acquired, so can it be lost. Individuals can forget words, phrases, even entire languages, and over the course of time speaking communities, too, let go of the tongues that were once theirs. The experience of the passing of speech can lie at the origin of literary, philosophical, and artistic creation. Dr. Heller-Roazen will discuss some of the ways in which the arguments of Echolalias could bear on the case of Yiddish language and culture.

Dr. Heller-Roazen is professor of comparative literature and director of graduate studies, Princeton University. He is the author of Echolalias: On the Forgetting of Language (Zone Books, 2005). The event is free and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Kathy.carll@drexel.edu or 215-895-6388.

Great Works Symposium: "The Mechanical Body"

The Winter 2008 Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) on "The Mechanical Body" will present a talk by Dr. Greg Downey, "Computer-Compatible Stenographers and Text-Reading Television Viewers: Building Workers and Audiences for Closed Captioning," today, February 28, 2008, at 3:30-4:50 p.m. in room 340, Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

In this talk, which is drawn from his recent book Closed Captioning: Subtitling, Stenography, and the Digital Convergence of Text with Television (JHU Press, 2008), Downey discusses two ways in which the development of television closed captioning meant altering the relationship between bodies and information technology. On the production side, interactive digital computers, coupled with human mental and physical skills, made live television captioning possible. At the same time, on the consumption side, understandings of the audiences for television captioning changed as well, from deaf viewers seeking broadcast equity to readers of all types, regardless of hearing, who might benefit from text on television.

This event is free and open to the public.
