Rare Lincoln Portrait on Display at Drexel

A portrait of Abraham Lincoln (above) by noted wood engraver Gustav Kruell (1843-1907) is on display ths month as part of The Drexel Collection on the third floor of Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Kruell, who was born in Dusseldorf, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1873, served as the first president of the Society of American Wood Engravers and became famous for his portraits of well-known Americans. This portrait of Lincoln, which dates to 1891, is considered his finest work.

Two of Sudan's "Lost Boys" to Give Talk at Mandell Theater

The University Writing Program, Pennoni Honors College, the Office of the Senior Vice President for Finance, and Africana Studies will present a talk with Michael Kuch and James Lual, two "lost boys" of Sudan now living in Philadelphia, on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at noon in Mandell Theater (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

A luncheon reception will follow in the Living Arts Lounge.

Seniors: Sign-up for Class of 2008 Graduation Photos

Senior portraits for the Class of 2008 will be taken Monday, February 25 through Thursday, February 28, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in room 3012, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Any student who has a portrait taken will receive a complimentary Lexerd yearbook.

To schedule an appointment, log onto Carl Wolf Studio’s 24-hour scheduling Web site at http://www.cwsouryear.com and enter Drexel's school code: 87172. Appointments can also be scheduled by calling 1-800-687-9327 during normal business hours.

CEO Program to Present "Budget Record Keeping"

The Creating Excellent Organizations (CEO) program will offer a workshop, "Budget Record Keeping," today, February 12, 2008, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

This workshop, presented by Joe Gonzalez, budget coordinator for campus activities, is designed to assist student organization members and leaders on various methods that can be utilized to keep accurate and detailed budget records.

Judaic Studies Program to Present "The Book of Exodus and the Origins of the Passover Seder"

The Judaic Studies Program, in cooperation with the Jewish Publication Society, will present "The Book of Exodus and the Origins of the Passover Seder," a lecture by Dr. Jeffrey H. Tigay, on Friday, February 22, 2008, at 11 a.m. in room L33, W.W. Hagerty Library (33rd and Market Streets).

Although the Passover Seder is inspired by the account of the exodus in the Bible, the Seder, as it is known and practiced today, originated more than 1,000 years later in the Greco-Roman and Talmudic periods of Jewish history, and some parts of it are even more recent than that.

Dr. Tigay is the A.M. Ellis Professor of Hebrew and Semitic Languages and Literatures, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, University of Pennsylvania.

This lecture is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

CAB Battle of the Bands Applications Available

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) and Pi Nu Epsilon are now accepting applications for the Ninth Annual Battle of the Bands.

Applications are available online at http://www.drexel.edu/cab and in the CAB office located between the University bookstore and Mandell Theater, MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

To be eligible to participate, one member of the band must be a full-time undergraduate student at Drexel University.

The iSchool at Drexel Colloquium Series

Dr. David Leake (above), professor and director of graduate studies, computer science department, Indiana University, will give a talk, "Aiding Search to Support Knowledge Capture: A Human-Centered Approach," on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. in room 113, Stratton Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Electronic concept mapping tools empower experts to play an active role in the knowledge capture process, facilitating the construction of richly connected multimedia "knowledge models," sets of linked concept maps and resources about particular domains. This talk describes research on methods to provide content-relevant information to aid concept map builders, based on cognitive models of how people generate and understand concept maps.

The lecture is part of the The iSchool at Drexel's Colloquium Series, sponsored by the College of Information Science and Technology.

Networking and Etiquette Hors d'oeuvres and Mocktails Hour

Commuter Student Programs and Services will sponsor etiquette expert Mindy Sills, from the John Powers Modeling Agency, to help students navigate through tough etiquette decisions on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the atrium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Steinbright Career Development Counselors and invited employers will be available to help attendees practice formal behavior while Sills walks students through a scenario: the students are at work and their boss invites them to attend a company party. They know that some important people in your company will be there. What should they wear? How should they juggle food and drink at the same time? What should they talk about and how should they introduce themselves to the higher-ups in the company?

Drexel Study Abroad and Fellowships Office Announce IIPP Fellowship

The Drexel Study Abroad and Fellowships office announces the IIPP fellowship which focuses on US security and global competitiveness.

The IIPP Fellowship Program provides students from underrepresented minority groups with education and training experiences critical to entry and advancement in international affairs careers. IIPP is a comprehensive program of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, graduate study and student services, including, mentoring and career development. Additionally, the program provides students with the education and training needed to enter successfully, advance within, and lead international affairs careers.

Drexel IAS junior, Latoya Stewart, won this prestigious scholarship last year and is currently studying abroad in France as part of her award package.
