Dr. Craig J. Newschaffer Speaks to U.S. Congressional Caucus on Autism Findings

Dr. Craig J. Newschaffer, a renowned expert on autism epidemiology from Drexel's School of Public Health, told the Congressional Caucus on Autism Research and Education on Thursday, February 8, 2007, that the release of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) data on autism prevalence marks a significant advance for autism epidemiology in the United States.

Dr. Newschaffer was invited to speak to the Congressional caucus to offer his expert opinion on the new data from the CDC autism and developmental disabilities monitoring (ADDM) project. The project indicates that almost seven in 1,000 8-year-old children had an autism spectrum disorder. The data, collected across multiple project sites nationwide, represents the best available estimate of the prevalence of autism in the United States. Findings from the ADDM project from 2000 and 2002 were released on Thursday.

Fourteen ADDM project sites are established across the nation, including sites in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. Dr. Newschaffer, who joined the faculty of the School of Public Health this past fall, was one of the first ADDM project principal investigators and remains affiliated with the Maryland ADDM project site.

The Delaware Valley Science Fairs Seek Judges

The Delaware Valley Science Fairs seeks research-experienced scientists, engineers, health care professionals or graduate students willing to volunteer one day of their expertise to help one of the most important science education programs in the Delaware Valley.

It is the intention of all Delaware Valley Science Fairs that students receive as much positive reinforcement for their efforts as possible.  It is important for students to meet people, such as you, because that experience enriches their education and perhaps encourages them to pursue a career in science or engineering.  It also provides you with a chance to see how science education is progressing in our schools, and to contribute to that progress.  A few minutes of professional contact with a student scientist or engineer may make a life-time of difference in their career.

Contact with student scientists in a science fair is a rewarding experience for scientists or technicians who have recent experience in any field of medicine, science or engineering.

The 2007 Delaware Valley Science Fairs will be judged Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at the Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia.  Judging requires a full day.  Judging instruction and support are included, along with a continental breakfast and lunch.

For more information or to volunteer, visit http://www.dvsf.org.
