Nobel Laureate to Present Kaczmarczik Lecture Today
The Department of Physics will hold its 13th annual Kaczmarczik Lecture today, February 7, 2008, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Nobel Laureate, Dr. William D. Phillips (above), will present a lecture Time and Einstein in the 21st Century: the Coolest Stuff in the Universe. Dr. Phillips is a NIST fellow and professor of physics at the University of Maryland.
The lecture is named in honor of Dr. Paul Kaczmarczik, physics professor emeritus, who began his career as a Drexel professor in 1953. The Kaczmarczik Lecture Series, established in his honor in 1995, brings outstanding scientists to Drexel to speak about topics at the cutting-edge of physics research. As part of the activities, the Department of Physics will hold an open house, with an expected attendance of about 500 high school students. This annual event has exposed thousands of local high school students to recent discoveries in physics and given them the opportunity to meet with some of the country’s leading scientists. During the open house, physics researchers will give brief presentations to the students on topics such as biophysics, astrophysics, computational physics, condensed matter, and chaos theory, along with a tour of the Department of Physics facilities.
The event is free and open to the public.
