Winter 2008 Great Works Symposium
The Winter 2008 Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) on "The Mechanical Body" will present a lecture by Dr. Hakon Hakonarson, today, February 5, 2008, from 3:30 to 4:50 p.m. in room 340 of Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Dr. Hakonarson is a board-certified pediatric pulmonologist and director of the Center for Applied Genomics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. In his lecture, "The Genetic Landscape in Complex Medical Disorders Such as Pediatric Cancer and Autism: Utility of Genome-Wide Association in Detecting SNPs and Copy Number Variations that Confer Disease Susceptibility,” Dr. Hakonarson will explain how genome-wide association (GWA) studies are rapidly replacing the more traditional candidate gene studies and microsatellite-based linkage mapping approaches that have dominated gene discovery attempts for common diseases for many years.
This talk addresses genetic associations in pediatric cancer, autism and other complex medical disorders, demonstrating that apart from single SNP-based associations, the genetic landscape in these disorders involves both rare and common copy number variations (CNVs) that predispose individuals to these disorders.

The iSchool at Drexel Colloquium Series
Dr. Reagan Moore (above), associate director for data intensive computing at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, will speak about "Rule-based Data Management Systems," today, February 5, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. in Room 014, Rush Building (30 N. 33rd Street).
The NSF Cyberinfrastructure projects assemble digital holdings for scientific domains. The digital holdings may represent observational data from remote sensors, experimental data from major laboratories, simulation output, or derived data products and publications. The source of the data and the users of the data are widely distributed. Also, each project imposes specific management policies needed for access controls, data distribution, data provenance, and validation criteria.
Moore coordinates research efforts in development of massive data analysis systems, scientific data publication systems, and persistent archives. An ongoing research interest is support for information based data-intensive computing. Moore is an active participant in NSF workshops on digital libraries and knowledge networks. Recent publications include a chapter on data-intensive computing in the book, The Grid: Blueprint for a New Computing Infrastructure.
The lecture is part of the The iSchool at Drexel's Colloquium Series, sponsored by the College of Information Science and Technology.
