Physics Department Presents: Time and Einstein in the 21st Century: the Coolest Stuff in the University

The Department of Physics will hold its 13th annual Kaczmarczik Lecture on Thursday, February 7, 2008, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Nobel Laureate, Dr. William D. Phillips, will present a lecture Time and Einstein in the 21st Century: the Coolest Stuff in the University. Dr. Phillips is a NIST fellow and professor of physics at the University of Maryland.

The lecture is named in honor of Dr. Paul Kaczmarczik, physics professor emeritus, who began his career as a Drexel physics professor in 1953. The Kaczmarczik Lecture Series, established in his honor in 1995, brings outstanding scientists to Drexel to speak about topics at the cutting-edge of physics research.

As part of the activities, the Department of Physics will hold an open house with an expected attendance of about 500 high school students. This annual event has exposed thousands of local high school students to recent discoveries in physics and given them the opportunity to meet with some of the country’s leading scientists. During the open house, physics researchers will give brief presentations to the students on topics such as biophysics, astrophysics, computational physics, condensed matter, and chaos theory, together with a tour of the Department of Physics facilities.

The event is free and open to the public.

Deadline Today for Baiada Competition

The deadline to submit concept papers for consideration in the 2008 Business Concept Competition hosted by the Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology is today, February 4, 2008 at noon. All Drexel University students are welcome and encouraged to participate. No prior business plan writing experience is required.

Interested students should register and upload their three page plans at http://www.lebow.drexel.edu/Centers/Baiada/BusinessPlan/phaseI.php. All competitors will receive substantial feedback from the judges that will be valuable for those who wish to develop full business plans from these ideas. There will be cash prizes; each of the top five teams will receive $500!

Student Counseling Center to Present Parenting Workshop Today

The Student Counseling Center on the Center City Hahnemann Campus will hold a free parenting workshop today, February 4, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 310, Bellet Building (15th and Race Streets).

The workshop is open to all Drexel students, faculty and staff.

Architectural Engineering Institute Hosts Trip to Washington D.C.

The Drexel Student Chapter of the Architectural Engineering Institute will host a trip to Washington D.C. on Saturday, March 1, 2008. The bus will leave Drexel at 8 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. The cost of the trip is $15.

Students will be dropped off at the National Building Museum, and then will be free to explore the nation's capital on their own. Other area attractions include the United States Capitol Building, National Gallery of Art, National Natural History Museum, and the National Air and Space Museum. Benefits Buzz Today: "Long-Term Care"

Human Resources will host "Long-Term Care" today, February 4, 2008, from 3 to 4 p.m. in room 116, Korman Center (33rd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets). The next Benefits Buzz session, "Employee Discounts Procurement Office," will be held on Monday, February 18, 2008, at the same time and location.

Benefits Buzz is an informal weekly meeting geared toward answering questions and providing information about Drexel benefits. Human Resources representatives will be available to present information and answer questions from faculty and staff.

Mardi Gras Celebration on Center City Hahnemann Campus

Public Safety Student Advisory Committee

The USGA and the Department of Public Safety are recruiting students for a Public Safety Student Advisory Committee (SAC). The Public Safety SAC will address issues of Public Safety and the services provided by the department, such as the escort service, patrolling and the scheduling of officers. The committee will meet with Public Safety administrators to discuss how the department can better interact, effect and protect the Drexel University community. Meetings will be monthly and last approximately one hour.

Pi Kappa Alpha Hosts Talk on Real Estate Market

Pi Kappa Alpha alumnus David Batty '06 will discuss the present condition of the real estate market and provide some insight for students who may be purchasing apartments or houses in the near future on Monday, February 4, 2008 at 8 p.m. at the Pi Kappa Alpha house (210 N. 34th Street).

Batty has become involved in this market as a source of supplementary income and has managed to weather the recent market turmoil with adjustable rate mortgages. Those who would like to learn the tricks of the trade and discover how to profit from real estate are invited to attend.

SEA Study Abroad Information Session

Spend a term sailing the high seas! Through a unique partnership with SEA Semester, based in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Drexel students can spend a term learning about the ocean environment. Its relationship to the earth and to human affairs while earning Drexel credits. The program is open to all majors. Federal aid and special scholarships are available for this program.

Architecture/Engineering/Construction Roundtable Discussion

The University's Construction Management Association of America student chapter (CMAA-DU) will present an AEC (architecture/engineering/construction) roundtable discussion today, February 4, 2008, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Paul Peck Alumni Center (32nd and Market Streets).

The entire Drexel community is invited to learn from the experience of five successful panelists as they discuss their jobs and career paths. The event will also provide an opportunity to network with some of the top professionals in the industry.

Panelists include: Refreshments will be served from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
