D&M to Present Lecture Tonight: "Fashion's Environmental Footprint"

The Design & Merchandising Program of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present a lecture, "Fashion's Environmental Footprint," by Heather Iwanow, senior lecturer, Department of Clothing Design and Technology, Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. in Ruth Auditorium at Nesbitt Hall (33 rd and Market Streets).

That shirt was a steal at $5.99, but what are its environmental costs? How are the raw materials processed and what environmental damage did that create? Where was it made and were workers exploited? How did it get to the store and how much carbon was emitted in transporting it? What will you do when you tire of your latest fashion buy and no longer want it? Some retailers and manufacturers are actively pursuing corporate social responsibility while others are not. Some consumers care about the environmental impact of their purchase, but others do not. Where do you stand?

The lecture is free and open to the public.

CoAS to Present "Mindfulness and Acceptance: New Developments in Cognitive Behavior Therapy" Today

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Seminar Series will present "Mindfulness and Acceptance: New Developments in Cognitive Behavior Therapy," today, January 30, 2008, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in room 109 of Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Street).

Dr. James D. Herbert (above), associate dean, CoAS, professor of psychology and director of the Anxiety Treatment and Research Program at Drexel University, will discuss promising new developments in psychotherapy that blend traditional practices with a focus on mindfulness and acceptance.

A large amount of empirical literature supports the effectiveness of cognitive therapy programs for a wide-range of psychological problems, including depression and anxiety disorders. However, recent data has raised fundamental questions about how it works, and has set the stage for the development of new approaches that challenge some of the central assumptions of the model. Preliminary data suggest that these new approaches, which blend elements of traditional cognitive therapy with a focus on mindful acceptance of distressing experiences, hold considerable promise for the treatment of a wide-range of psychological difficulties.

This event is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

Complimentary refreshments will be served.
