CEO Program to Hold Workshop Tonight: "Leadership Styles"

The Creating Excellent Organizations (CEO) program will offer a workshop, "Leadership Styles" today, January 29, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020 of MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

This workshop takes an in-depth look at the four main leadership styles that have been understood as early as in Hippocrates’ (above left) discussions of the four humours and in Plato’s ideas about character and personality; continuing through the analysis of psychologist Carl Jung (above right) and currently measured in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test.

Through interactive games, tasks, and leadership assignments, each of the four leadership styles will be reviewed in depth including how one learns to act within a preferred leadership style while appreciating the contributions of others.

These free workshops are designed for student organization leaders and members. For more information, visit http://www.drexel.edu/studentlife/ceo.

CoAS to Present Dean's Seminar "Mindfulness and Acceptance: New Developments in Cognitive Behavior Therapy"

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Seminar Series will present "Mindfulness and Acceptance: New Developments in Cognitive Behavior Therapy," on Wednesday, January 30, 2008, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in room 109 of Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Street).

Dr. James D. Herbert (above), associate dean, CoAS, professor of psychology and director of the Anxiety Treatment and Research Program at Drexel University, will discuss promising new developments in psychotherapy that blend traditional practices with a focus on mindfulness and acceptance.

A large amount of empirical literature supports the effectiveness of cognitive therapy programs for a wide-range of psychological problems, including depression and anxiety disorders. However, recent data has raised fundamental questions about how it works, and has set the stage for the development of new approaches that challenge some of the central assumptions of the model. Preliminary data suggest that these new approaches, which blend elements of traditional cognitive therapy with a focus on mindful acceptance of distressing experiences, hold considerable promise for the treatment of a wide-range of psychological difficulties.

This event is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Nanotechnology Institute to Host Lecture on Nanodiamonds Today

The A. J. Drexel Nanotechnology Institute will present a seminar on Nanodiamonds by noted Ukrainian scientist Dr. Vyacheslav Danilenko today, January 29, 2008, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the William F. Mitchell Auditorium, Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Dr. Danilenko was among the first to demonstrate detonation synthesis of diamonds and has more than 30 years experience in the design of reactors for the synthesis of nanodiamonds. He is also the founder of Alit NanoDiamond in Ukraine.

This technology represents an environmentally responsible method for the disposal of expired ammunition, and is considered the most economical method for the production of nanodiamond powders with particles of 5-10 nm in size. As nanodiamond applications in medicine, electronics and lubrication continue to emerge, the technological variations and details will become vital to companies considering the integration of nanodiamonds in their products and manufacturing processes.

This seminar is sponsored by Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania, http://www.benfranklin.org, and NanoBlox, Inc, a nanodiamond company in the United States.

The iSchool Colloquium Series: "Participatory Libraries"

Dr. David Lankes, Director of the Information Institute of Syracuse (IIS) and an associate professor at Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, will speak on "Participatory Libraries" today, January 29, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. in Room 014, Rush Building (33rd Street, north of Market Street).

The library landscape is constantly in flux. New technologies, new practices and new theories are the sign of an active field. However, these dynamic forces also lead to confusion and conflict. It also leads to a spate of new services and functions that are sometimes awkward to integrate into existing research, operations and curricula. In today's world of Web 2.0, Library 2.0, social networks, blogs and wiki’s, what concepts are durable and what is new that must be imparted to the next generation of professionals?

The lecture is part of the The iSchool at Drexel's Colloquium Series, sponsored by the College of Information Science and Technology.
