Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III Appointed Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff
The appointment of Carl "Tobey" Oxholm III as executive vice president and chief of staff was announced by President Constantine Papdakis on Wednesday, January 23, 2008.
In his announcement Dr. Papdakis said, “This new position is key in enabling the continued growth and success of the University. Drexel's growth in size, quality and scope over the past 10 years has been unprecedented in the University's history. That success has created a strong foundation for an exciting future. We have embarked on the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in Drexel history. We are implementing our academic strategic plan and campus master plan and developing an environmental master plan. By Drexel's 125th anniversary in 2016, we plan to double our endowment and our research funding. And we stand ready to take advantage of the unforeseen transformational opportunities that are sure to present themselves, just as the opportunity to acquire an outstanding medical college came along 10 years ago.
"With the addition of the executive vice president and chief of staff position, the Office of the President will have the leadership to meet these challenges while ensuring effective day-to-day operations of the University. The executive vice president will oversee the efficient operation of my office as well as the following functions: General Counsel, Government and Community Relations, Information Resources and Technology, Institutional Research, Internal Audit and University Relations. Tobey is a member of the president's cabinet and executive council, and will chair each in my absence. He will have a role in the University's budgeting and master planning efforts, coordinating the collaboration of senior officers and serving as my liaison in the process. He will also implement and direct special projects at my request and represent Drexel at appropriate events.
"Serving as general counsel and senior vice president since 2001, Tobey has been a driving force in many of the initiatives that have transformed Drexel into a comprehensive university with a reputation as one of the nation's most innovative institutions. He was a key player in bringing on board our health sciences schools including the Drexel University College of Medicine. He spearheaded Drexel's voluntary adoption of the organizational governance practices outlined by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, making us a trailblazer among nonprofit institutions. Tobey founded a state-of-the-art insurance company for our doctors and nurses, and helped create Drexel's nationally recognized healthcare mediation program. And he was a prime visionary for Drexel Law, engineering the school from the ground up.
"Among other notable Drexel contributions, Tobey has been secretary to the Drexel Board of Trustees and Drexel e-Learning, host and visit coordinator for Pennsylvania Department of Education accreditation site visits and a member of the School of Public Health's Steering Committee for Accreditation, the Quality Assurance Committee of the Drexel University College of Medicine, the Center for Civic Engagement's Advisory Committee and the University Advisory Committee on Service Learning. In 2004, he received the Provost's Award for Distinguished Service.”

That shirt was a steal at $5.99, but what are its environmental costs? How are the raw materials processed and what environmental damage did that create? Where was it made and were workers exploited? How did it get to the store and how much carbon was emitted in transporting it? What will you do when you tire of your latest fashion buy and no longer want it? Some retailers and manufacturers are actively pursuing corporate social responsibility while others are not. Some consumers care about the environmental impact of their purchase, but others do not. "Moving Digital from Project to Program: Experiences from The New York Public Library" Today
Barbara Taranto, director of the Digital Library Program, New York Public Libraries,, will deliver a talk, "Moving Digital from Project to Program: Experiences from The New York Public Library," today ,January 24, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. in room 14, of the Rush Building, (30 N. 33rd Street).
Over the past several years, the Digital Library Program (DLP) of the New York Public Library (NYPL) has been primarily funded by grants, and development has been driven by the projects associated with these grants.
Project-driven development, while sufficient for getting the DLP up and running, is not sustainable over the long-term. In the past few months the Library has taken bold steps to transform the disparate digital activities of the past decade into a sustainable program that can be fully integrated into the operations of the NYPL research and branch libraries.
Taranto will discuss the recent shift in NYPL’s strategy and how this shift has affected the organizational and technological infrastructure of the Library. She will also discuss “fresh air, ” a new approach to current digital projects.
