Mentors Needed for Shadowing Day

The Center City Hahnemann Campus and Hahnemann University Hospital will host ninth grade students from the School District of Philadelphia in the annual Shadowing Day on Friday, January 25, 2008.

Students will visit the Center City campus to gain first-hand exposure to the everyday working world. Volunteers are needed to spend three hours as mentors to ensure that student participation in this annual program is both productive and memorable. Over the years it has been demonstrated that even this brief time shadowing faculty, staff and employees can be a life-changing experience for students.

The Drexel InterView™ to Air in Boston on Cambridge Community Television

The University's lively half-hour original TV series featuring conversations with nationally known and emerging talents in the arts, culture, science and society, The Drexel InterView™, will be broadcast from January to April on Cambridge Community Television, which serves the Harvard and MIT academic communities.

The program is hosted by Paula Marantz Cohen, a distinguished professor of English at Drexel and author of the award-winning Silent Film and Triumph of the American Myth (Oxford University Press) and three best-selling novels, including Jane Austen in Scarsdale or Love, Death, and the SATs (St. Martin's Press).

Her essays have appeared in publications such as The Yale Review, The American Scholar, The New York Times, and The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The show is videotaped in Drexel's historic Westphal Picture Gallery, one of Philadelphia's best examples of late 19th century architecture.

SCDC On-campus Recruiting Workshop for Graduating Students

The Steinbright Career Development Center will present its On-Campus Recruiting Program today, January 22, 2008, at 5 p.m. in suite 250, the SCDC Conference Room (3201 Arch Street).

Employers from the Philadelphia region and around the country are interested in interviewing Drexel students and they participate actively in this program. All graduating students who wish to participate in on-campus recruiting are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop to ensure full understanding of the entire process and awareness of critical deadlines.

Two SCDC online resources, the Direct Apply Job Board and the Employer Directed Resume Search will also be explained in detail.

CEO Program to Hold Workshop Tonight "Communicating Effectively: Corporate Success"

The Creating Excellent Organizations (CEO) program will offer a workshop, "Communicating Effectively: Corporate Success," today, January 22, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020 of MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

The workshop will be presented by Dan DiMucci, Senior Vice President of Client Development, Pennoni Associates, Inc.,and will cover what it's like to work in a corporate structure and how to communicate with corporate colleagues to keep ahead of the curve.

Benefits Buzz: Tuition Remission

Human Resources will host a session on tuition remission today, January 22, 2008, from 3 to 4 p.m. in Room 116, Korman Center (33rd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets). The next Benefits Buzz session, "Benefits Forms: Where to Find Them," will be held on Monday, January 28, 2008 at the same time and location.

Benefits Buzz is an informal weekly meeting geared toward answering questions and providing information about Drexel benefits. Human Resources representatives will be available to present information and answer questions from faculty and staff.

PRSSA Student Chapter to Host Press Release Writing Workshop

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) will hold a workshop, "How to Write a Press Release," today, January 22, 2008, at 7 p.m. in room 102A of the Korman Center (33rd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets).

Attendees will learn, or refresh their knowledge, about the basics of writing a press release, including format and content. The workshop is designed for beginners and more experienced writers, as well as those who are interested in any aspect of public relations.

This workshop is free and open to the public.

Philadelphia Writers Conference at the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery

A Philadelphia Writer's Conference with guest speaker Rachel Simon (above) will be a featured event on Sunday, January 27, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery, located on the third floor of the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Simon, an award-winning author and nationally-known public speaker, will discuss her 20 years of surviving the writer's life, and will offer advice for aspiring writers. She is best known for her critically-acclaimed bestselling memoir Riding the Bus with My Sister, which was adapted for a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie directed by Anjelica Huston. She has also authored the forthcoming book Building a House with My Husband.

This lecture is free and open to all.

New Drexel Winter Shuttle Loop

Drexel Transportation announces a Winter Shuttle Loop on the University City Main Campus through the winter term. This new shuttle will run in a continuous loop, approximately every 15 minutes during the evening hours beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the Winter Shuttle Loop.

The shuttle will pick-up at Caneris Hall (115 N. 32nd Street), Kelly/Myers Quad (34th and Race Streets), and the Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets). The shuttle is sponsored by the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services.

CAB's Annual Crystal Ball

Dance the night away at CAB's Annual Crystal Ball on Friday, February 8, 2008, from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. The evening includes dinner and music at the Park Hyatt Hotel at the Bellevue in Philadelphia. Bus transportation will be provided for students to and from the event. Buses will depart at 6:30 p.m from the Creese Student Center. Buses will begin returning students to campus at 11 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale today, January 22, at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person or $30 a couple and are limited to two per undergraduate Drexel ID. The CAB office is located in MacAlister Hall between the Drexel Bookstore and Mandell Theater.

Sexual and Relationship Violence Resource Consultant Training

Resource Consultants (RCs) are volunteers of staff and faculty from across the campuses of Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia who are trained to provide information on campus and community resources available to victims and survivors of sexual assault, date violence, domestic violence and stalking. This opportunity is supported by the Department of Justice Consortium Grant to the three collaborating institutions to combat violent crimes against women.

Training will take place at the following dates and times:

To be listed as a Resource Consultant, volunteers must attend all four sessions in the order listed above. All training sessions will take place in the Seminar Room of Penn's Department of Public Safety, located at 4040 Chestnut Street. A working lunch will be provided.

RCs participate in comprehensive training on the dynamics associated with each of these crimes and on how to provide compassionate support and resource information to victim/survivors in need. RCs will join a special group of campus and community volunteers and obtain the necessary tools to help the victims and survivors of sexual and relationship violence that could be encountered in the course of day-to-day activities.

Campus Crusade for Christ will present "Christianity: Boring, Untrue and Irrelevant?" as a preview of its Alpha Course on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room in North Hall (33rd and Race Streets). Complimentary pizza will be provided.

This event is intended for those who would like to explore the Christian faith in an open, friendly, "questions-are-welcome" atmosphere.

The Alpha Course is a relaxed and practical introduction to Christianity, covering topics such as, "Who is Jesus, why did Jesus die and how can I be sure of my faith?" No one is made to feel they must talk, but everyone is given the chance to express what they think and feel – whatever they believe.

Maya Open Mic Night

Maya, the undergraduate literary magazine, will hold an open mic event today, Janurary 22, 2008, at noon in the Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets). The event will feature stand-up comedy, poetry, prose, music and other artistic expressions of Drexel students and staff. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.
