Independent Filmmaker Peter Miller at Drexel

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History and Politics will welcome independent filmmaker Peter Miller for a screening of his highly acclaimed documentary on the famous Sacco-Vanzetti case. The screening will take place on Friday, February 2, 2007, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Room 125 of Nesbitt Hall Ruth Auditorium (33rd and Market Streets). Admission is free and open to the public.

The case of Sacco and Vanzetti remains one of the most important and controversial legal battles in American history. Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian immigrants and militant anarchists, were swept up in the post-World War I witch hunt of radicals known as the "Red Scare." Arrested in 1920 on charges of committing two murders in the course of a payroll robbery at a shoe factory in South Braintree, Mass., Sacco and Vanzetti were tried and convicted.

After a series of failed appeals and biased extra-judicial evaluations of the trial proceedings, Sacco and Vanzetti were executed in 1927. By the time of their deaths, the Sacco-Vanzetti case had become an international cause celebre, with huge protest demonstrations taking place in dozens of countries in Europe and the Americas.

Peter Miller's documentary is "a wonderful film, as timeless as the struggle for human justice, as relevant as today's headlines," said film producer Ken Burns.

In this Issue of Dragonfire

The January 17, 2007 issue of Dragonfire explores our manifold relationships to the animal world and its relationships to us. We've always had complex relationships with our nonhuman animal brethren. They are our pets, pests, test subjects and beasts of burden. They are symbols of who we are ideologically and nationally (the American eagle, the Russian bear). They represent our inner desires and fears (from Genesis to Jung). And, of course, they are also food.
