DCAE Announces January Faculty Events

The Drexel Center for Academic Excellence (DCAE) announces the following January events for Drexel faculty.

SCDC Online Features Job Postings for Graduating Students

Students scheduled to graduate between now and June, 2008, who are looking for full-time jobs can access more than 800 job openings provided online by the Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC) recruiting program. Job postings are available online now.

The deadline for posting a resume and applying for jobs online is Friday, January 25, 2008.

CoAS to Present Dean's Seminar on "Data Deluge" Today

The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Seminar Series will present "Multiscale Data Representations," today, January 16, 2008, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in room 109 of Disque Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Thomas Yu (above), associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, will discuss how new data types lead to methods of compression, transmission and noise removal, while also focusing on the fundamental ideas underlying these technologies.

This event is free and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Late Night Series to Present Comedian Steve Gerben

Late Night Series Philadelphia, a weekly open-mic program, will feature stand-up comic Steve Gerben (above) on Thursday, January 17, 2008, at 8:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Creese Student Center (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

The Creese Café will be open during the performance, with special extended hours until 10 p.m.

The Late Night Series (LNS) is a free weekly open-mic program that features poetry, spoken word, live music, comedy, and drama by local entertainers and Drexel students.

Interested performers should arrive no later than 8 p.m.

LNS is free and open to the general public.

CEO Program to Hold Workshop "The Power of Positive Thinking" Tonight

The Creating Excellent Organizations (CEO) program will offer a workshop, "The Power of Positive Thinking," today, January 16, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in room 2020 of MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

This topic can be a life-changer for anyone who takes it seriously. Having a positive yet realistic view of one's abilities, goals and responsibilities can open up another realm of potential that many leave untapped. Thoughts are often controlled by the emotions of those with whom one interacts. It takes mental conditioning to deflect negative thoughts. This workshop will offer tips and information to increase one's capacity to think positively.

Benefits Buzz Today on Prescription Drug, Dental and Vision Benefits

Human Resources will host "Understanding and Maximizing Your Prescription, Drug, Dental and Vision Benefits" today, January 16, 2008, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in room 105 of the Bellet Building on the Center City Hahnemann Campus (1505 Race Street). The next Benefits Buzz session, "Tuition Remission" will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at the same time and location.

Benefits Buzz is an informal weekly meeting geared toward answering questions and providing information about Drexel benefits. Human Resources representatives will be available to present information and answer questions from faculty and staff.

MEM Seminar Series to Present Next Lecture

The next lecture in the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics Seminar series "Computational Framework for Multiscale Simulations of Weakly Ionized Plasmas" will be presented on Friday, January 18, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the MEM Seminar Room ( room 162) of Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Vladimir Kolobov (above), manager and technical leader of the Plasma Technologies Group of the CFD Research Corporation, will discuss his project, which aims to classify possible scenarios and develop general recipes for clustering phase space to dynamically separate sub-structures at different scales, efficiently solve the dynamics for each scale, provide an accurate interface between the different scales and a control mechanism to verify the accuracy of the scale separation and inter-scale mappings.

New Drexel Winter Shuttle Loop

Drexel Transportation announces a Winter Shuttle Loop on the University City Main Campus through the winter term. This new shuttle will run in a continuous loop, approximately every 15 minutes during the evening hours beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the Winter Shuttle Loop.

The shuttle will pick-up at Caneris Hall (115 N. 32nd Street), Kelly/Myers Quad (34th and Race Streets), and the Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets). The shuttle is sponsored by the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services.

Coat and Blanket Drive for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

The Office of Multicultural Programs, Residential Living, Student Life, and the Center for Civic Engagement are sponsoring a coat and blanket drive for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, which will be observed on Monday, January 21, 2008.

The coats and blankets (new or gently used) are being collected now through Monday, January 21.
