New Drexel Winter Shuttle Loop

Drexel Transportation announces a Winter Shuttle Loop on the University City Main Campus through the winter term. This new shuttle will run in a continuous loop, approximately every 15 minutes during the evening hours beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the Winter Shuttle Loop.

The shuttle will pick-up at Caneris Hall (115 N. 32nd Street), Kelly/Myers Quad (34th and Race Streets), and the Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets). The shuttle is sponsored by the Division of Student Life and Administrative Services.

Sign-up Deadline Today for Electronic W-2 Consent and TurboTax Opt-out

Today, January 15, 2008, is the last day that employees can sign-up to receive their 2007 W-2 forms electronically via DrexelOne at http://one.drexel.edu.

Electronic W-2s will be available not later than Thursday, January 31, 2008, from any computer with an Internet connection. The electronic option gives employees immediate access and printing capability as soon as the W-2 is available. Employees opting for electronic delivery will not receive a W-2 via U.S. mail.

For employees who choose the traditional paper form, W-2s will be mailed to the employees home address and postmarked by Thursday, January 31, 2008.

Importing W-2 Data intoTurboTax and the Opt Out Feature

Employees using TurboTax software will again have the ability to import W-2 information from the University or the Drexel University College of Medicine directly into TurboTax forms.

Employees should consult http://www.drexel.edu/depts/compt/payroll/ under "Online Directions" for a step by step guide for the electronic W-2 consent form.

For more general information about how to use the TurboTax import feature, visit http://www.turbotax.com.

All employees are automatically enrolled in the TurboTax import feature. Employees who would like to opt-out of this feature, should go to "Tax Forms," at http://one.drexel.edu, click on TurboTax "Import Election" and follow the instructions. Employees must complete the-opt out election for 2007 tax information by today, January 15, 2008.

Home Address Verification

Employees must update the home address that appears on DrexelOne, http://one.drexel.edu/, by today, January 15, 2008, so that it will be correctly reported on their W-2 form. Undeliverable paper W-2 forms will be returned to the University by the United States Postal Service.

To request an address change, e-mail name, University ID number and new address to hris@drexel.edu. Employees are urged to update their address throughout the year as changes occur.

Department of Chemistry to Present Lecture by Penn Professor

The Department of Chemistry will present, "Asymmetric C-C and C-O Bond-Forming Tandem Reactions," a lecture by Dr. Patrick Walsh, professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, January 16, 2007, at 11 a.m. in room 109 of Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Inaugural Event for Certificate Program in Humanities, Health Sciences and Technology Today

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of English and Philosophy will present the inaugural event of the Certificate Program in Humanities, Health Sciences, and Society today, January 15, 2008, at 4 p.m. in room 109 of Disque Hall (32nd Street between Market and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. John A. Rich (above), chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy and director of the Center for Academic Public Health Practice will give a lecture, "In the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time: Violence Narrative and Public Health." Dr. Rich was the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2006.

Great Works Symposium to Present Biomedical Engineering Lecture Today

The Great Works Symposium (UNIV 241) will present the second event in its Winter 2008 Series, "The Mechanical Body: Building Humans, Challenging Humanity," today, January 15, 2008, from 3:30 to 4:50 p.m. in room 340 of Curtis Hall (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Dr. Alisa Morss Clyne, the P. C. Chou Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (who has a joint appointment in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems), will present a lecture, "A Brief Overview of Biomedical Engineering: From the Dread Pirate Roberts to the X-Men," arguing that since humans began building tools they have built tools to improve health and healthcare.

Biomedical engineering has grown rapidly, especially over the past 20 years, bringing engineering methodology to biology and medicine. The goal of biomedical engineering is always the same-- to engineer solutions that will improve human health and alleviate suffering. Dr. Clyne’s courses focus on fundamental engineering concepts and their application to biological systems, in particular the cardiovascular system.

This event is free and open to the public.

CEO Program to Hold Workshop on "Character and Sports" Tonight

The Creating Excellent Organizations (CEO) program will offer a workshop, "Character and Sports," today, January 15, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Myers Hall Tutor Lounge (33rd and Race Streets).

This workshop will be presented by Dan Simmons, associate director, Department of Athletics.

2008 Business Concept Competition Accepting Applications

The Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology is now accepting registrations for the 2008 Business Concept Competition. The competition is structured to encourage participation across all schools at the University. All Drexel students are welcome to enter, including those who are not currently enrolled in the entrepreneurial curriculum.

No prior business plan writing experience is required. Interested students should submit a three-page business concept describing a business idea, its market potential and how he/she would plan to bring it to market. Mentors are available at the Baiada Center to assist student teams with the writing process.

The deadline to submit a concept paper is Monday, February 4, 2008. Five $500 prizes will be awarded. In addition, all competitors will receive valuable feedback from the competition judges, which will prove to be very helpful to those who wish to develop full business plans.

Coat and Blanket Drive for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

The Office of Multicultural Programs, Residential Living, Student Life, and the Center for Civic Engagement are sponsoring a coat and blanket drive for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, which will be observed on Monday, January 21, 2008.

The coats and blankets (new or gently used) are being collected now through Monday, January 21.

SCDC Online Features Job Postings for Graduating Students

Students scheduled to graduate between now and June, 2008, who are looking for full-time jobs can access more than 800 job openings provided online by the Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC) recruiting program. Job postings are available online now.

The deadline for posting a resume and applying for jobs online is Friday, January 25, 2008.

Dr. Boris Polyak, assistant professor of surgery in the Drexel University College of Medicine, is quoted in a Philadelphia Inquirer story published on January 14, 2008, about a study in which magnetism is used to drive healthy cells to animals' blood vessels.
