Mayor Nutter Helps Kick-off Olympic & National Team Trials

Wednesday night, January 9, 2008, Mayor Michael Nutter (above left) in his second day in office, visited the campus to speak at an opening reception for the 2008 U.S. Olympic & National Team Trials in Table Tennis at the Paul Peck Alumni Center (32nd and Market Streets). Mayor Nutter joined President Papadakis (above right) and Dr. Eric Zillmer, director of athletics, in welcoming event partners, athletes, trustees, local dignitaries and press to kick-off the four-day event. 

Mayor Nutter lauded the efforts of Drexel University and the Philadelphia Sports Congress in bringing the 2008 U.S. Olympic & National Team Trials in Table Tennis to Philadelphia.The city is one of only two cities to host two U.S. Olympic Trial events. Philadelphia will also host the gymnastics trials.

Also speaking at the reception were People's Republic of China Consul He Bin, Joseph Torsella. president & CEO of the National Constitution Center and chair of the Olympic and International Sports Project and Michael Cavanaugh, interim executive director of the United States Association of Table Tennis. Dr. Zillmer emceed the event.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic & National Team Trials in table tennis are being held at the Daskalakis Athletic Center through Sunday, January 13, 2008. The trials feature the top 24 table tennis athletes from across the country with 12 competing in men's singles and 12 competing in women's singles in a round-robin format to help determine who will represent the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Office of Student Life Presents Free Movie Tonight

The Office of University Student Life will screen the film "3:10 to Yuma" today, January 11, 2008, at 7 p.m. on the Center City Hahnemann Campus in the Geary B Auditorium on the first floor of the New College Building (245 N.15th Street).

This screening is free for all students and their guests.

"3:10 to Yuma" is a western starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. The movie begins with the capture of outlaw Ben Wade in a small town. Dan Evans, desperate for money, volunteers to watch the outlaw until Wade's train to Yuma arrives. While in custody Wade tries to convince Evans to let him go by tempting him with much more money than the job offers in this battle of wills.

Two Drexel Professors Collaborate in Pearlstein Exhibition

Graphic design professor John Langdon and Dr. Eric Zillmer, Carl R. Pacifico Professor of Nueropsychology and director of athletics, have collaborated on a unique exhibition on display in the Pearlstein Gallery through February 8, 2008.

"Open to Interpretation: The Art and Science of the Inkblot" investigates the iconic image and process of the inkblot, presented as both a method of artistic expression and a scientific tool for studying personality and the perceptual process.

The Pearlstein Gallery, located in Nesbitt Hall (33rd and Market Streets), is open to the public Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SCDC Online Features Job Postings for Graduating Students

Students scheduled to graduate between now and June, 2008, who are looking for full-time jobs can access more than 800 job openings provided online by the Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC) recruiting program. Job postings will be available for review beginning on January 12, 2008.

The deadline for posting a resume and applying for jobs online is Friday, January 25, 2008.

BIOMED Seminar: Drexel Smart House Approach to Home Health Care

The first BIOMED seminar of the winter term, "Drexel Smart House: A Proactive Approach to Home Health Care," will be presented today, January 11, 2008, at 4 p.m in room 108 of Matheson Hall (32nd between Chestnut and Market Streets).

The Drexel Smart House is a student-led, multidisciplinary project to construct an urban home to serve as a "living laboratory" for exploring cutting-edge design and technology. Participants will conduct research and develop designs in the areas of environment, energy, interaction, health, and lifestyle with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life in the urban residential setting.

The seminar is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

Materials Science and Engineering to Present Lecture with Dr. Francis D'Souza

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering will present a lecture, "Mimicking Photosynthesis by Supramolecular Donor-Acceptor Nanostructures: Design to Devices," by Dr. Francis D'Souza (above) , professor of chemistry at Wichita State University on Tuesday, January 14, at 2 p.m. in the Hill Conference Room on the 2nd floor of the LeBow Engineering Center (31st and Market Streets).

Dr. D'Souza’s talk will explain the design and photoinduced electron transfer reactions in supramolecular donor-acceptor nanostructures composed of ferrocene, porphyrin, fullerene and carbon nanotubes.

This event is open to all students, faculty and staff.

Refreshments will be served immediately after the lecture in the Materials Science and Engineering Lounge, in room 331 of the Lebow Engineering Center.

Student Chapter of IEEE to Present Lecture on MP3 Players

The student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers will present a lecture by Dr. David Vallancourt, visiting professor of electrical engineering from Columbia University, about the inner workings of iPods and other MP3 players, on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at 5 p.m. in the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

Dr. Vallancourt will give his presentation on a broken and disassembled iPod, explaining how this popular device works from the smooth click-wheel to the signal processing of the device.

All students, faculty, and staff are invited. Complimentary pizza will be served.

Baiada Center to Present Business Plan Development Workshop

The Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology will host a workshop on Saturday, January 12, 2008, on the ground floor of the Baiada Center (3225 Arch Street).

The session will focus on establishing the revenue model for a prospective business and preparing the financial documents necessary for an effective business plan. The workshop will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast. The presentation will begin promptly at 10 a.m.
