Department of Architecture to Present Lecture on Architect Frank Furness

The Department of Architecture at the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design will present a lecture by critic and historian Michael J. Lewis, "Furness: Second Thoughts," as part of the 2007-08 Farajollah & Maryam Badie Arfaa Lecture Series, on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. in the Mandell Theater (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

Michael J. Lewis is a widely published historian and architecture critic whose essays have appeared in a variety of publications, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Atlantic Monthly. His books include the prize-winning biography August Reichensperger (1993), The Gothic Revival (1993), and American Art and Architecture (2006). He is also the author of Frank Furness: Architecture and the Violent Mind (2001), the first biography of Philadelphia’s celebrated Victorian architect, who designed the University’s Paul Peck Alumni Center (above).

The lecture is free, open to the public and worth 2 AIA /CES learning units.

Department of Psychology to Present Lecture on Mindfulness and Meditation

The Department of Psychology will present “Mindfulness and Meditation: Tools for Healing and Growth,” on Monday, January 14, 2008, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium at the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).

The lecture be presented by Michael Baime, M.D., director of the Penn Program for Stress Management and a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Behavior Therapy Association (PBTA) and provides two hours of CE credits for psychologists. It is not necessary to pre-register.

Tickets Available for Olympic & National Team Trials at the DAC

The 2008 U.S. Olympic & National Team Trials in table tennis will be held at the Daskalakis Athletic Center beginning tomorrow, January 10, 2008 and continuing through Saturday, January 13, 2008. The trials are expected to draw the top 24 table tennis athletes from across the country with 12 competing in men’s singles and 12 competing in women’s singles in a round-robin format to help determine who will represent the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Study Abroad Office Announces New Overseas Programs

The Drexel Study Abroad Office announces a variety of new study abroad programs in Australia, Taiwan, Germany and England that are open to Drexel students in a range of majors.

Philadelphia Writers Conference at the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery

A Philadelphia Writer's Conference with guest speaker Rachel Simon (above) will be a featured event on Sunday, January 27, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery, located on the third floor of the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Simon, an award-winning author and nationally-known public speaker, will discuss her 20 years of surviving the writer's life, and will offer advice for aspiring writers. She is best known for her critically-acclaimed bestselling memoir Riding the Bus with My Sister, which was adapted for a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie directed by Anjelica Huston. She has also authored the forthcoming book Building a House with My Husband.

This lecture is free and open to all.

Drexel, by Cecilia Beaux is part of The Drexel Collection and can be viewed in the Gallery in the Paul Peck Alumni Center (32nd and Market Streets).

Creese Café Open This Week During Late Night Series

Late Night Series Philadelphia, a weekly open-mic program, announces new extended hours for the Creese Café during this week's performance on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 8:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Creese Student Center (33rd and Chestnut Streets).

The Late Night Series (LNS) is a weekly program that features poetry, spoken word, live music, comedy, and drama. This week's featured performer will be Justin David, the winner of the first "Win a Feature Competition."

The LNS is free and open to the general public. Interested performers should arrive at 8:00 p.m.

Commuter Student Programs and Services to Present Workshop on Goal Setting

Commuter Student Programs and Services will present a workshop on goal setting today, January 9, 2008, at noon in the Private Dining Room on the lower level of the Creese Student Center ( 32nd and Chestnut Streets).

This program will provide an opportunity for attendees to start on personal, academic and career goals in 2008. The presentation will include tips on making goals and resolutions, short term and long term, and provide specific techniques on how to better achieve goals in 2008.

Tickets Now on Sale for 18th Annual Madrigal Dinner

The Drexel Chamber Singers will present the 18th Annual Madrigal Dinner on Friday, February 22, and Saturday, February 23, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Court of the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Student performers, costumed in Renaissance attire, will serve an authentically prepared meal, while storytellers and jesters entertain. Following the feast, the Chamber Singers will perform the popular music of the era: Elizabethan madrigals, French chansons, English ballads and lute songs.

Tickets are $21.95, including the meal, and must be purchased in advance. For those interested only in the concert, balcony seating is available for $3.

This event is open to the general public.

The Center for Student Academic Resources will present a student workshop “Strategies for Academic Success,” today, January 9, 2008, from noon to 1 p.m. on the Center City Hahnemann Campus in suite 1608 of the New College Building (245 N. 15th Street).

Sean R. Anthony, assistant director of the Center for Student Academic Resources, will share valuable strategies and suggest approaches to achieving academic success.

This workshop is designed for all students and will be extremely helpful for new and transfer students.
