DesignIntelligence Ranks Interior Design Programs Among Nation's Elite
DesignIntelligence, a bi-monthly journal published by Greenway Communications, ranked Drexel University's interior design program among the best in the nation, including Harvard University.
Housed in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, the undergraduate interior design program was ranked 10th in the nation, while the graduate interior design program was ranked 13th. In the East region, the undergraduate program was ranked 4th and the graduate program 5th.
DesignIntelligence is the Design Futures Council's bi-monthly "Report on the Future" and the repository of timely articles, original research, and industry news.

Tickets Available for Olympic & National Team Trials at the DAC
The 2008 U.S. Olympic & National Team Trials in table tennis will be held at the Daskalakis Athletic Center from Thursday, January 10 to Saturday, January 13, 2008. The trials are expected to draw the top 24 table tennis athletes from across the country with 12 competing in men’s singles and 12 athletes competing in women’s singles in a round-robin format to help determine who will represent the United States in the 2008 Olympic Games at Beijing.

President Papadakis Invites Students to Send Suggestions
President Papadakis has increased the award amount for the best undergraduate and graduate student suggestions for improving the University. The undergraduate and graduate students who submit the best suggestions to Dr. Papadakis that are implemented by the University will each receive $1,000 cash awards at commencement on Saturday, June 14, 2008. Suggestions must be emailed to papadakis@drexel.edu.
Dr. Papadakis will review all of the emails. Over the years, Drexel has implemented students' recommendations, such as senior exit surveys, teaming up with the City of Philadelphia to help keep the University City community clean, incorporating customer service training in new employee orientation and offering credit counseling and other financial management services to students.

DUCOM to Host Sex and Gender Research Forum
The Drexel University College of Medicine's Institute for Women's Health and Leadership will host the annual Helen I. Moorehead-Laurencin M.D. Sex and Gender Research Forum on Thursday, January 10, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Edmund D. Bossone Research Enterprise Center (Market Street between 31st and 32nd Streets).
The forum will address research in women’s health, with special emphasis given to the specific vulnerability of women to alcohol and drug related problems. Guest speakers include Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemott, University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Emmanuel S. Onaivi, William Paterson University; and Dr. Dace Svikis, Virginia Commonwealth University.
The forum will also include panel discussions on the current status of women’s health research, as well as gender and ethnic diversity in academic research. A detailed program agenda is available at http://www.drexelmed.edu/iwhl.

Career Services Orientation Sessions for Graduating Students
The Steinbright Career Development Center’s on-campus recruiting is gearing up for winter term. Graduating students who would like to interview with potential employers on-campus are encouraged to attend one of the Career Services Orientation Sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, January 8, 9, 10, 2008. The sessions will be offered daily at noon, 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. in the Living Arts Lounge (located adjacent to the Mandell Theater) in the Creese Student Center (32nd and Chestnut Streets).

Upcoming Speaker Events at the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery
A Philadelphia Writer's Conference with guest speaker Rachel Simon (above) will be a featured event on Sunday, January 27, 2008, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Anthony J. Drexel Picture Gallery, located on the third floor of the Main Building (32nd and Chestnut Streets).
Simon, an award-winning author and nationally-known public speaker, will discuss her 20 years of surviving the writer's life, and will offer advice for aspiring writers.
She is best known for her critically-acclaimed bestselling memoir Riding the Bus with My Sister, which was adapted for a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie directed by Anjelica Huston. She has also authored the forthcoming book Building a House with My Husband.

Men’s and Women’s Basketball at the DAC
There will not be any home games at the Daskalakis Athletic Center this week due to the Olympic and National Table Tennis Trials.
The men's basketball team begins a three-game home stand against Georgia State on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. at the DAC (33rd and Market Streets).
The men's team will host Hofstra on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at noon in a game that will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet.
The women's basketball team returns to action at the DAC on January 17, 2008, at 7 p.m. when they face Northeastern University for the first time since their record-setting, five overtime game last February. The Dragons won that game, the longest game in women’s basketball history, 98-90.

HR Presents Physician Lecture on the Importance of Sleep
Human Resources will hold the next in its series of physician lectures with, “The Importance of Sleep: Facts and Myths,” on Thursday, January 10, 2008, from noon to 1:30 p.m in rooms 2019-20 of MacAlister Hall (33rd and Chestnut Streets).
Joanne Getsy, M.D., FCCP, FAASM will review sleep-related topics such as how much sleep is enough, why teenagers sleep so much, why sleep gets more difficult as we get older, why snoring is dangerous, and other common sleep issues. The talk is designed to answer questions people have about sleep, and provide an understanding of the role of sleep in our lives.
Dr. Getsy is a board-certified sleep specialist and medical director of the Drexel Sleep Center and an associate professor of medicine at the Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Getsy has been practicing in the field of Sleep Medicine for 20 years. She sees patients with a host of sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, narcolepsy, insomnia and restless legs syndrome
Dr. Getsy has appeared on local and national television, including NBC and ABC affiliates in Philadelphia, The "Nightly News" with Dan Rather, "20/20" and the "Today Show" on NBC. Dr. Getsy has authored numerous articles on sleep disorders and continues to pursue research regarding the association between sleep apnea and heart disease.
This event is free and open to Drexel faculty and staff. A light lunch will be served. Reservations are not necessary.

The Chronicle of Higher Education quotes Dr. Robert J. Chapman, clinical assistant professor of behavioral-health counseling at Drexel University, in a story published in the December 21, 2007, issue about medical amnesty for college students who face violations for drinking. Arguments for and against medical amnesty written by Dr. Chapman are published as a sidebar to the story.
Nicole Hester, a member of the women's basketball team, is profiled in a story published on ESPN's Web site on December 23, 2007. Hester battled Hodgkin's lymphoma and was named the recipient of Colonial Athletic Association's John H. Randolph Inspiration Award in November. Denise Dillon, coach of the women's team, is quoted in the story.
